Weekend Diversion: Disney’s Game of Thrones

“When I was a kid, my world was five streets long. I never got away, except in books. I lived a thousand lives through books.” -George R.R. Martin

It’s a rare thing indeed for a fantasy story — one set in an entirely different world from our own — to captivate the collective imagination of the adult world. Yet that’s precisely what George R.R. Martin’s A Song Of Fire And Ice, and its television counterpart, Game of Thrones, have done. Have a listen to Josh Page, Sean Pannikar, and Hana Ryu, better known as the Forte Tenors, as they sing their operatic rendition of Ramin Djawadi’s title theme for the show,

while you consider that despite creating a world of terror, darkness, horrifying creatures, death, starvation and more, the same world also contains some of the most fascinating, compelling characters ever written.

What better way to immortalize them than… by creating Disney-style versions of them?

This is exactly what Brazilian artists Fernando Mendonça, featured above, and Anderson Mahanski, featured below, have done.

Image credit: Anderson Mahanski, of Daenerys Targaryen with her largest dragon, Drogon.

They’ve joined forces to form the art studio Combo Estúdio, and by far (for me) their most original, spectacular project has been to “Disneyfy” various Game of Thrones characters in extraordinarily creative fashion.

Image credit: Anderson Mahanski, of Varys (the spider) with his “little birds.”

It’s brilliant and creative, done in a classic Disney-cartoon style, as an amalgamation of both delightful whimsy but with the extremely gravy undertones that underlie all of Game of Thrones.

Image credit: Fernando Mendonça, of Bran Stark with Hodor. What seems like a joyous picture belies the truth of Bran’s paralysis.
Image credit: Anderson Mahanski, of the Mountain (Gregor Clegane) and the Red Viper (Oberyn Martell). This game of “peek-a-boo” is… well, if you’ve either read the books or seen the show, you’ll know what horrors are imminent.
Image credit: Anderson Mahanski and Fernando Mendonça, of Arya Stark and the Hound (Sandor Clegane), complete with the Hounds disfigurement and eating chicken, which was the scene of their most intense battle together.
Image credit: Fernando Mendonça, of Tyrion Lannister, a drunken and scarred dwarf, as his unique character is never allowed to forget.
Image credit: Fernando Mendonça, of Tyrion’s sweet sister Cersei Lannister, with a “Tyrion wanted” poster. Oh, does she ever want him dead, simply for the murder of her son (which he didn’t commit) and her father (which he gleefully did).
Image credit: Fernando Mendonça, of a White Walker in the style of Queen Elsa from Frozen. This is not a friendly-but-misunderstood creature, however!

Check out their entire Game of Thrones collection as well as all their other creations over at either the main Combo Estúdio website or by liking their Facebook page. And if you’ve never seen Game of Thrones (or read a song of Fire and Ice), I hope this perhaps inspires you to get into what’s my favorite cultural phenomenon of the decade!

Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you back here soon for more wonders and joys of the Universe.

Inside Adultdex, the cyberporn convention that time forgot

by Adi Robertson

I found out about Las Vegas’ defunct erotic CD-ROM convention because I was wondering if there had ever been a murder at CES.

As far as I know, there hasn’t – at least, that’s what a Google search tells me. But in my fruitless search, I caught a piece about the death of Comdex, a massive consumer electronics tradeshow that rivaled CES until it shut down in 2003. And alongside it, there was another name: Adultdex.

The Cake: A New, Modern Pastry Shop in Kiev

by Caroline Williamson

The Cake: A New, Modern Pastry Shop in Kiev

What do you do when you want to serve delicious modern pastries and need a place to do it in? You hire 2B.GROUP to design a ridiculously cool restaurant space – that’s what! Located in Kiev, Ukraine, THE CAKE is a fairly neutral modern backdrop to some colorful swag and yummy eats that make up the brand-new restaurant.

The-Cake-Restaurant-2B-Group-2

With handcrafted elements included in the design, the diverse interior comes together with the help of modern furnishings, like the seating and the giant pink balloon dog in the center.

Each of the geometric tiles, all 10,000 of them, was handcrafted and organized into a random, puzzle-like pattern on the floor.

The dog sits in the middle like a glazed cake, the designer’s intent.

Picture of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar

Museum of Islamic Art

Photograph by Zeqiant Wang, National Geographic Your Shot

A modern spin on Islamic architecture characterizes the exterior of the I.M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. As a form of practice, Your Shot member Zeqiant Wang tries to capture the museum from different angles and in different light, here shooting in the early evening. I had already been waiting there for two hours when I saw a Qatari man in traditional clothes walk by, Wang writes. I got my camera ready fast. The walking posture of the man is perfect and can be called beautiful.

Wangs picture recently appeared in Your Shots Daily Dozen.

This photo was submitted to Your Shot. Check out the new and improved website, where you can share photos, take part in assignments, lend your voice to stories, and connect with fellow photographers from around the globe.

Kanye West and Paul McCartney are making music together — here's the first single

by Chris Welch

Kanye West and Paul McCartney are officially collaborating. Today, the hip-hop star released a track called "Only One" that features McCartney on keys. It's a fairly straightforward, sparse ballad with a thick dose of Auto-Tune applied to West's vocals. It's more 808s and Heartbreak than Yeezus, but that's fine by us. The song can be streamed for free at Kanye's website.

"Only One" is also available on iTunes right now, and we get the impression you'll be hearing more from the West / McCartney duo. A press release describes today's single as "the first publicly available recording from what has become a prolific musical collaboration between these two legendary artists." The pair came together in Los Angeles last year for "a simple...

'Take Me To Church' and the extremely earnest return of apocalypse pop

by Emily Yoshida

If there is such a thing as seasonal music for New Year's Eve, it is apocalypse pop. Apocalypse pop is a subgenre of radio dance pop that I made up, whose lyrics and musicality invoke the end of the world, usually to rationalize dancing for a very long time or engaging in sexual activity with someone you might otherwise not. For reference, the holy trinity of apocalypse pop is "Give Me Everything" (Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack, and Nayer), "Till The World Ends" (Britney Spears), and "We Found Love" (Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris). All three of those songs were released in 2011 — the brief reign of apocalypse pop coincided with the rise of the EDM-crossover pop hit, back when EDM could still be said to cross over into the mainstream,...
