Zenyatta Overwatch Figure Comes With All The Glowing Orbs

by Mike Fahey

Good lookin figure.
Also this.. "He’s a premium format figure, which means he comes with a hell of a lot of hands — 14 different hands, in fact. Joined hands, pointing hands, attacking hands, one hand in his pocket and the other making a peace sign." LOL

No video game is complete without some sort of glowing orb, and Omnic monk Zenyatta is Overwatch’s prime source of lighted spheres. Japanese toymaker Good Smile Company understands this. That’s why their new Zenyatta figure has all of the orbs.

Telltale plans to finish The Walking Dead despite mass layoffs

by Kyle Orland
Darendukes

Not that I play this game but I'm glad they are finishing out the final season. It was a big fuck-you to staff when they suddenly closed up and that sucks but at least they are making an effort to not leave loyal series customers hanging.

After Friday's surprise announcement that more than 90 percent of Telltale's staff had been let go, the company now says it is talking to "potential partners" that could help complete the current, final season of The Walking Dead.

Part two of the planned four-part episodic adventure game series launched today, and the season was previously set to conclude on December 18. But Telltale confirmed in a tweeted statement last night that it is "actively working on a solution that will allow episodes 3 and 4 to be completed and released in some form." To that end, the company says that "multiple potential partners have stepped forward to express interest in helping to see The Final Season through to completion."

While 25 of Telltale's 275 employees are being retained by the company for now, Netflix indicated in a statement that skeleton staff will be finishing up work on Minecraft: Story Mode, which is "moving forward as planned." Negotiations between Netflix and Telltale for a potential Stranger Things episodic game are now out the window, though, and Netflix says it will be "evaluating other options for bringing the Stranger Things universe to life in an interactive medium."

Overwatch Finally Reveals What Torbjorn's Much-needed Overhaul Will Look Like

by Cecilia D'Anastasio

Overwatch’s feisty dwarf engineer Torbjorn has long been considered a“troll pick.” In my experience, it’s common for teammates’ blood pressure to skyrocket whenever players pick him. We already knew Torbjorn was getting a much-needed overhaul, and today, Overwatch’s game director Jeff Kaplan finally announced what…

Ever wanted to see “beyond” the NES game screen? With WideNES, you can

by Kyle Orland
Darendukes

neat

Here at Ars, we're big fans of emulators that go past perfectly recreating the original hardware and move on to enhancing the game-playing experience. Whether that means converting 2D NES sprites to 3D polygons or removing latency frames after controller presses, we're there.

So we were more than happy to recently stumble upon WideNES, a new emulation project that extends the visible area of an NES game map past the usual 4:3, 256x240 resolution screen area we're used to. Using WideNES, you can even zoom out and pan through previous screens using the keyboard and mouse wheel while still playing the game.

The generalized methods used by WideNES are described in a fascinating blog post by University of Waterloo student Daniel Prilik, who created the algorithm. Basically, the WideNES system watches the background "map" data constantly scrolling through the emulated NES PPU as you play. It also closely monitors the PPUSCROLL register, which controls the actual screen scrolling by pointing to different parts of VRAM as the player moves.

Data vandal changes name of New York City to “Jewtropolis” across multiple apps [Updated]

by Sean Gallagher
Article intro image

Enlarge / Multiple applications, including Zillow, Snapchat, and Citibike, displayed vandalized map data to users identifying New York City as "Jewtropolis." (credit: Snapchat, Zillow, Citibikes)

Late yesterday, users of Snapchat and a number of other applications began to report that the label on in-application maps for New York City had been changed to "Jewtropolis." That change in data from the mapping developer kit company MapBox had been pulled in from OpenStreetMap—a community-driven mapping project also used by Wikimedia.

The same map data made its way to the real estate application Zillow:

OpenStreetMap has frequently had to deal with data vandalism, rolling back malicious changes to map data by trolls. In one case in 2010, someone created a fictional town of "West Harrisburg" and imported GPS traces for nonexistent streets over what was actually forest and farmland. One vandal with the username MedwedianPresident was recently blocked after committing a series of changes to roadway names and other map details in New York, including changing the name of the Manhattan Bridge to "Ku Klux Klan Highway," changing the name of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Drive to "Zionist Cannibal Drive," and renaming the Hugh Carey Tunnel (formerly the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel) to "Adolph Hitler Memorial Tunnel," among other things.

Sea of Thieves players are using water buckets to sink skeleton ships

by Jordan Devore

Sea of Thieves players have discovered an odd yet surprisingly effective way of defeating the AI skeleton crews in this week's Cursed Sails expansion: buckets full of water. Not explosive barrels, or cannonballs, but buckets. I love it when players come up with alternate ways to solve problems in video games.

The skeleton-led ships will only appear at specific locations during certain times, so finding much less defeating the undead crews is easier said than done. I've yet to take even one ship down. To that end, if you're a solo or small-team player, your best bet is to align yourself with at least one other crew.

Here's how a successful player-versus-AI sea skirmish will typically play out:

And here's how redditor chopbone sinks skeleton ships "in under a minute" using buckets:

1) Get you and two friends on a brigantine.

2) As you go to the fight hit a rock (I know it sounds stupid, just do it).

3) Bail the water till you get to the fight (will need the two others bailing water the entire time while one drives).

4) Ram the skeleton boats and have all three of you bail the water from your boat to their boat (cannot use the water directly from the ocean because the game for some reason makes a bucket of water on a boat a full bucket and a bucket of water from the ocean a 1/4 of a bucket).

5) Repeat and do not repair anything unless the water is to overwhelming for your crew.

I haven't been able to capture footage or find clips, but yeah, that's the idea. "My favorite part about this strategy is the adrenaline rush you get because if the crew isn't bailing the water it can become intense," said chopbone. "Also yesterday while we were doing this all the others in the alliance could not believe our boat wasn't sinking to this strategy and it was fun to [hear] their coms in game about us."

If you can find them, skeleton ships are a neat and rather significant addition to Sea of Thieves. I think it'd be cool for Rare to host events in which the AI crews can emerge from the depths and engage you anywhere on the map. That's originally how I thought the system worked, and I was tense.

Ryan Reynolds to star in R-rated Home Alone reimagining Stoned Alone

by Kyle Yadlosky

Here's an idea you're definitely not high enough to think is any good: Fox is going to remake Home Alone but with an R rating and starring Ryan Reynolds with a concept that sees him missing his plane to a ski trip, lighting up a fat joint, and then trying to fend off thieves that break into his house. They're going to call it Stoned Alone. This is a real movie. This is really happening.

Now, I know we've all bemoaned uninspired Hollywood remakes, but I don't think turning a classic into a stoner comedy sounds exactly original. If there's one thing Seth Rogen and company have taught us, it's that there's a limit to just how funny a stoner comedy can be. The joke "but he's high!" only gets you so far. It can be tedious in the first half hour, let alone 90 minutes. I mean, after Reynolds pulls on a Deadpool mask, refers to himself as Dankpool, and tries to fight the burglars off, what will be left to see?

We Fell In Love With This 33-Pound Cat, So We Decided To Adopt Him And Start His Weight Loss Journey

by CatastrophiCreations
Darendukes

Fat kitty

Hi, my name is Mike Wilson and together with my girlfriend Megan Hanneman we have a company that makes wall-mounted cat furniture designed to promote activity for indoor cats. We have two cats who help us test our furniture ideas and let us know their favorite pieces. A couple of months ago, we decided to bring a new kitten into our home to join the two cats we had already. One day, when we only had 45 minutes before we had to be at work, we decided to head over to our local Humane Society to have a look around. When we walked in, we were instantly drawn to this gentle giant named Bronson. The receptionist told us that to go in and see him we would first need to sit down and be interviewed by a staff member. The Humane Society was backed up to the point that we weren’t able to see Bronson in person and so the first day all we saw of him was his backside. He made us wait for the front.

After we left, neither of us could stop talking about him and how much fun it would be to bring him home and help him lose the extra pounds. We went back to the Humane Society the following day, shortly after they opened, and sat down with a staff member. She told us that all the Humane Society knew about Bronson’s past was that his last owner passed away. Since he was all the way up to 33 pounds and only three years old, they suspected it was an elderly person who may have been feeding him table scraps or something. We went in to meet him and instantly fell in love. I remember my cheeks hurting from smiling for so long.

Bronson was so affectionate and sweet and was happily kneading his cat bed when we first petted him. All of a sudden, we noticed that he was a polydactyl cat with extra fingers and had very pronounced thumbs! Even more adorably, his paws oddly resembled our home state of Michigan. He was the sweetest cat we had ever met and he seemed so happy to be home and have a big space of his own.

After bringing Bronson home, we scheduled his first visit to the vet. While we were there, we found out that Bronson is also quite the ladies man. All the doctors and vet techs were taking turns coming in the room to admire his robust body, cute face, and mittens.

It’s very important for heavy cats to lose weight slowly, or else they can get Fatty Liver Disease, which can be a fatal illness. We have adjusted Bronson’s diet three times since we got him, but we think that he’s on track to safely lose this weight. He’s currently on 375 calories per day. Half of them are from the kibble the Humane Society had him on and half are from the grain-free wet food we’re weaning him onto. We’ve also changed his exercise routine a few times. At first, it was playing with toys with him laying down for about 20 minutes a day and also carrying him downstairs so that he needed to climb back up to get to his favorite napping spot.

After a few times of seeing him hustle up the stairs, we started worrying about doing damage to his joints or it hurting him while he was making the journey back up and decided to hold off until he’s a little more fit. Currently, his exercise routine is made up of moving his food dish around the room to promote walking, I feel like we’ve lost points with him on that one, and still playing with toys while he’s laying down. His absolute favorite toy is a tomato filled with catnip, which he likes to attack, bite, and kick with his back feet.

We have started an Instagram account for him so that people could follow along on his weight loss journey. It’s been a little more than two months and he already has over 13,000 followers and a really nice community of people cheering him on along his way. Many of his followers have been willing to share their tips on feline weight loss and it’s also a place where we can share their ideas. Carrying Bronson became an issue early on. He’s so large and he carries a lot of weight in his chest, so there’s no great way to pick him up without feeling like we’re hurting or squishing him. To combat this problem, we invented the “transportation pillow,” which is.. just a pillow. As simple of an idea as it is, carrying him with his pillow has been a great way to get him out to our living room without making him incredibly uncomfortable.

There are many great qualities about Bronson that we find incredibly lovable. One of the cutest things is that he almost always sleeps with a pillow. He also isn’t shy about taking up too much bed real estate. We’ve pretty much split the bed into thirds and Megan and I have each taken turns at the end of the bed.

Our target goal is for Bronson to lose one pound per month and he’s currently down 1.6 pounds, so he’s well on his way to a healthy life. He’s not quite ready to join the other cats in testing the furniture up on the wall, but they know he’ll get there in due time.
