Cryptography failure leads to easy hacking for PlayStation Classic

by Kyle Orland

Nice.

In the days since the PlayStation Classic's official release, hackers have already made great progress in loading other PlayStation games (and even non-PlayStation software) onto the plug-and-play device. What's more, it seems some sloppy cryptography work on Sony's part is key to unlocking the device for other uses.

Console hackers yifanlu and madmonkey1907 were among those who were able to dump the PlayStation Classic's code via the system's UART serial port in the days after its release. From there, as yifanlu laid out on Twitter, the hackers found that the most sensitive parts of the system are signed and encrypted solely using a key that's embedded on the device itself, rather than with the aid of a private key held exclusively by Sony. In essence, Sony distributed the PlayStation Classic with the key to its own software lock hidden in the device itself.

Further examination by yifanlu during a series of marathon, Twitch-streamed hacking sessions found that the PlayStation Classic also doesn't seem to perform any sort of signature check at all for the sensitive bootrom code that's loaded when the system starts up. That makes it relatively trivial to load any sort of payload to the hardware from a USB device at startup, as yifanlu demonstrated with a video of a Crash Bandicoot prototype running on the PlayStation Classic last week.

“It still makes me laugh thinking that Punisher: War Zone was unspooling in theaters while outside people were Christmas shopping,” says Patton Oswalt, Emmy Award-winning comedian, writer, actor, and author. “I don’t think they were doing any kind of courageous counter-programming…It felt like a studio dump.” One of…

Overwatch shows off its Winter Wonderland skins

by Jordan Devore
Darendukes

SUGAR PLUM FAIRY MERCY!!!

Blizzard has begun sharing the latest batch of Overwatch character skins ahead of next week's Winter Wonderland event. I was hoping we'd see creative festive designs. So far, the results are mixed.

The first skin, Sugar Plum Fairy Mercy, is the closest match to what I was suggesting. She can go hang out with Nutcracker Zenyatta, who I am still afraid is going to murder me in my sleep.

Next up is Arctic Fox Lúcio. Love the guy, but extreme snow gear is just not my aesthetic.

Then there's Snowboarder Zarya. She's at the top of my list for "skins I won't earn in a loot box and will have to buy next year when the in-game currency pricing comes down to an obtainable level."

Finally, Biathlon Widowmaker drops in. Of course she'd participate in a winter sport that's part cross-country skiing, part rifle shooting. We all should've seen it coming!

Winter Wonderland 2018 will brighten up Overwatch on December 11, and we'll have the rest of the month to try and earn anything and everything we can. The event ends on January 2, 2019.

Here are the Fallout 76 changes Bethesda didn't tell us about

by Brett Makedonski
Darendukes

Bye bye grenade exploit. Though I only used it once to gain maybe 5 levels. I really wish gunnah hadn't used it so much. Makes it really difficult to play with him since all the enemies spawn at higher levels.

Bethesda's first major steps toward fixing Fallout 76 came yesterday. The December 4 patch upped stash capacity, rebalanced some weapons, and nuked all sorts of bugs. Here are the full details of all the announced changes.

The problem is that there were evidently a bunch of other alterations that Bethesda never told us about. The community quickly caught on that this update had all sorts of balance-affecting tweaks that were stealthily implemented -- almost all of them geared toward making Fallout 76 even more of a grind-heavy game. Here are the major ones that the Fallout 76 subreddit figured out, as aggregated by user _Robbie:

There's now a cheaper starter edition of Overkill's The Walking Dead

by Peter Glagowski
Darendukes

I've never even heard of this game.

Overkill's The Walking Dead hasn't been met with the best reception. A confused mess of a shooter, the game's main hook is its co-op gameplay and with a lack of players, it's hard to see what the true intention of the entire endeavor really is. In a move to get more people playing, a new starter edition of the game is available for purchase.

Going for $30, Overkill's The Walking Dead Starter Edition is available on each platform. "One of the most active topics of conversation since launch has been the price," said Overkill. "Having read your comments and thoughts about how best to move forward, we’re introducing the Starter Edition." To that end, this starter edition will grant players access to all "Season One" content with the ability to purchase additional episodes after.

Season one is, apparently, all of the content the game launched with. Previous owners will be given season two for free. In a nice bonus, owners of the starter edition can be invited to games hosted by standard edition owners and play season two content without paying for it. There are no level caps or restrictions on unlocks, either, so this seems like the best way to try out the shooter if you're interested.

The California Highway Patrol on Friday pulled over a Tesla Model S that was traveling down the road—but whose driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel. The vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 101 in Palo Alto.

Officers said that they were unable to get the man's attention.

"One of the officers basically ended up going in front of the vehicle and basically tried to slow it down," a California Highway Patrol spokesman told KCBS radio. The process took about seven minutes, and the car traveled for about seven miles before coming to a stop.

Oath, the Verizon subsidiary that owns the Yahoo and AOL digital media brands, has announced that as of December 17, all adult content will be banned from the Tumblr blogging site. Any still or moving images displaying real-life human genitals or female nipples and any content—even drawn or computer-generated artwork—depicting any sexual acts will be prohibited.

Genitals and female nipples will only be permitted within the context of breastfeeding, childbirth, and in health-related subjects such as gender confirmation surgery. Written erotica will also remain on the site.

Nowadays, pornography represents a substantial element of Tumblr's content. A 2013 estimate said that around 11 percent of the site's 200,000 most-visited domains were porn, and some 22 percent of inbound links were from adult sites.

Guy Is Role-Playing As Preston Garvey In Fallout 76

by Luke Plunkett
Darendukes

"Another settlement needs your help."

But seriously, I had to quit out to the main menu last night and join back in because of borked quest markers. Wasn't marking the terminal it wanted me to go to, and even when I interacted with it, the quest wouldn't progress. Quit out, came back in, and the marker was on the terminal instead of 5 feet away. Did the same thing I did at the terminal the first time but this time it worked.

Things have been a little grim for Fallout 76 since (and even before) launch, so some fans are trying to make their own fun with the game. Like RpTheHotrod, who is running around the wastelands of West Virginia pretending to be Fallout 4's Preston Garvey, defender of Settlements.

Video: How an 11th-hour decision made Aliens versus Predator a classic

by Lee Hutchinson
Darendukes

I forgot about this game. Good stuff.

Video shot by Justin Wolfson and edited by Lee Manansala. Click here for transcript.

Welcome to the latest edition of "War Stories," where we sit down with video game developers and cajole them into talking about the gameplay design elements that almost broke their brains. In this episode, we're chatting up Tim Jones, the lead artist and producer of 1999's Aliens versus Predator.

Jumping on the brand wagon

The Aliens versus Predator brand is a childhood fever dream brought to life—who hasn't had playground arguments over who'd win in a fight between some of the biggest and baddest bad guys of them all? The idea of watching supernal figures battle it out is both fun and endlessly attractive, because everyone likes a spectacle, and the biggest spectacle of all comes from watching one irresistible alien force slam into another unmovable alien object. Sparks fly, things explode, and we're happy.

The "Aliens versus Predator" concept first appeared in graphic novel form, but it was catapulted into mainstream consciousness by a series of films in the 2000s. Though definitely spectacular in the most literal sense of the word, the movies all ultimately fall short in just about every other area; only the first, released in 2004, is (arguably) watchable without the aid of alcohol or other drugs.
