Excited to see Time Doyle tackling Rick and Morty, but I think this one is just OK. Seems kinda phoned in.

Tim Doyle’s “UnReal Estate V” at Spoke Art NYC.

Opening on Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at Spoke Art Gallery in New York City, New York is artist Tim Doyle’s solo exhibition wherein he reimagines cult film and television locations, “UnReal Estate V.”

From the gallery: “Since its conception in 2012, Doyle has tackled a wide range of famous pop culture locales, ranging from the wildly popular and recognizable to the more underground and cult-classic. For this new body of work, Doyle has covered some of his most beloved shows like The Simpsons while exploring new territories like Hayao Miyazaki’s Howls Moving Castle. This is the first installment of his UnReal Estate series that he’s blended television and cinema, which makes for a truly unique display.”

UnReal Estate V” will be on display until May 28th, 2017.

5 new and coming-soon brewery music venues to keep on your radar

Standard brewery taprooms are great and all, but what if your favorite band was playing right there in the same place you enjoy your favorite beer? And nothing against traditional concert venues, but sometimes forking over $12 for a plastic cup of light beer is a real drag. That’s why we’re especially stoked on a new breed of brewery music venues that bring great music and great beer closer than ever. Here are five new or coming-soon ones to watch:

Oskar Blues Brewery, Austin
All of Oskar Blues’ taprooms host live music at least four nights a week, but it’s the months-old Austin taproom that turns it up to 11. Its 5,000 square foot taproom can host 700 people for a show across both indoor and outdoor spaces, and the in-house booking coordinator focuses mainly on Texas acts including past shows with Calliope Musicals and Jamestown Revival. As Austin’s music scene has grown via events like SXSW and Austin City Limits, it’s become a hub for national musicians. That’s why, according to Oskar Blues marketing director Chad Melis, the brewery wants to make sure local talent isn’t squeezed out. That commitment was on display in March when the taproom hosted Black Fret’s 2017 Nomination Celebration, a showcase that toasted the Austin acts nominated for Black Fret’s annual grant program.

The Vanguard, Hampton, Virginia
When Randy Thomas, a Virginia general contractor, saw a request for proposals to redevelop the 14,000-square-foot building that once housed the Virginia National Guard, he jumped at the chance to transform it. Now, construction is under way to turn the massive brick building into an 18,500-square-foot combination brewpub, distillery and music venue. He’s fairly sure The Vanguard will be the state’s first co-habitated distillery and brewery, and it’s definitely the only one with a permit for live music seven nights a week. He’s installing a professional-grade sound system and stage with capacity for 1,000 people per show and hopes to be hosting local and touring acts by Labor Day.

SLO Brew, San Luis Obispo, California
The team behind SLO Brew brewpub and brewery-hotel The Lofts has announced acoustic shows at its second location, The Rock. The concert space is still under construction at that spot (situated near San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport), but the 30-barrel brewhouse, tasting room, biergarten restaurant and patio are up and running, with acoustic sets taking place in the biergarten/patio area. SLO Brew’s downtown location will still continue to host most of the big-name acts that come through the area courtesy of a booking partnership with The Knitting Factory Presents.

KettleHouse Amphitheater, Bonner, Montana
When KettleHouse Brewing owner/founder Tim O’Leary found out that the soil stability on part of the land he’d just bought in Bonner to build a new production brewery wasn’t going to hold up the building, he didn’t despair. He half-thought, “Well, it could be a cool amphitheater.” A few months later, he’d run the idea by Nick Checota of Missoula-based Logjam Presents, an entertainment production company that also owns Missoula venues The Wilma and Top Hat Lounge. A partnership was formed, and now the two companies are on track to open the 4,000-capacity KettleHouse Amphipheater with a July 16 show headlined by Ween. The location adjacent to the (on-solid-ground) production brewery and the beautiful Blackfoot River will make for an unbeatable combination of great scenery and great beer, O’Leary says. “I try not to speak in hyperbole but within two years this will be known as a touring stop and a must-see venue,” he says.

Big Sky Brewing, Missoula, Montana
Not to be one-upped by KettleHouse, fellow Missoula brewery Big Sky has announced major upgrades to its outdoor concert facilities, which have hosted shows on a portable stage on the brewery grounds since 2003. This summer, the lawn will welcome a new, dug-out amphitheater/bowl-style seating area with improved sightlines for up to 7,000 guests, as well as a new two-day Travelers’ Rest music festival headlined and organized by The Decemberists in August. Big Sky doesn’t actually sell beer at the summer concerts; two or three local non-profits selected annually sell Big Sky beer as a fundraiser for their organizations. “[Selling beer at our concerts] is one night’s work and hopefully you go home with $5,000 per night for your charity,” says brewery co-founder Neal Leathers. “That’s $20,000-30,00 per charity per year from this.”

4-star Oklahoma QB commit Cameron Rising flips to Texas

by Cody Daniel
Emahlstadt

LOLOLOLOL
Also, sorry Sam Elingher.

The Longhorns now have their two quarterback takes for the 2018 class on board!

Just over a week after landing a Sooner state quarterback in Casey Thompson, Tom Herman and his staff have flipped an Oklahoma commit, with four-star Newberry Park (Calif.) quarterback Cameron Rising announcing his commitment to the Texas Longhorns on Saturday.

From Rising’s Twitter announcement:

“I wanted to be sure so I visited more schools and even returned to Oklahoma for their spring game. Again, Oklahoma came out on top. AND THEN I WENT TO TEXAS and got that feeling Coach Smith told me about. I could feel the energy throughout the entire program - the coaches, players, recruits and fans. I want to be a part of building something special, something historic and know that Texas is the place for me.”

After initially keeping his recruitment open while committed to Oklahoma, Rising also noted that he will now be shutting his recruitment completely down to focus on academics and his senior season.

Rising made the lengthy trek from California to Austin last weekend for the Longhorns Orange-White spring game, and it’s now clear that he was considerably impressed after what proved to be a successful day with many of Texas’ top targets.

Also in attendance was Thompson, the Longhorns other quarterback commit, whom committed on April 13 and with Thompson and Rising now on board, Texas has the two quarterback takes it was looking for entering the 2018 cycle.

Rising also becomes the fourth commit of Herman’s first full cycle in Austin and lifts the Longhorns’ 2018 class to No. 26 nationally and No. 4 in the Big 12.

At 6’2, 209 pounds, Rising ranks as the nation’s No. 134 player, No. 4 pro-style quarterback and the No. 17 player in California, per 247Sports Composite.

Newswire: Labyrinth to be reborn with the help of Don’t Breathe’s Fede Alvarez

by Katie Rife

Like that Beetlejuice sequel or new Bill & Ted movie we keep hearing about but never actually come to pass, rumors of a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth pop up every once in a while—most recently in November 2014—only to be quickly tamped back down by the Jim Henson Company. Now we know why. Deadline reports that The Jim Henson Co. is, in fact, partnering with TriStar to release a new movie set in the Labyrinth universe. But, the studios are quick to point out, it’s not a sequel. It’s more of a spinoff, if anything.

To handle this delicate task, the studios have turned to Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez, who began his career with a remake of Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead and recently signed on to re-imagine another famous franchise with The Girl In The Spider’s ...

Texas gets revenge on Texas State with 9-2 victory

by Wescott Eberts
Emahlstadt

Texas baseball seems to be having a pretty solid year, so far. Not sure how much is left in the season, but I could easily be talked into hitting up a game some time.

The ‘Horns jumped out on the ‘Cats early and never looked back.

After a disappointing 11-10 loss to the Texas State Bobcats in San Marcos in March, the Texas Longhorns took care of business at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday evening, riding a four-run first inning to a 9-2 victory.

Right fielder Patrick Mathis started for the first time in nearly a month after dealing with leg issues and responded with a two-run home run in the fifth inning to push the lead to 7-2, but the major damage was done early.

A double started the scoring for Texas when third baseman Ryan Reynolds knocked in left fielder Tate Shaw. Texas State then walked catcher Michael McCann, setting up a run-scoring single by second baseman Bret Boswell.

The final two runs crossed the plate thanks to a fielder’s choice off the bat of first baseman Jake McKenzie and a walk issued to shortstop David Hamilton.

Overall, the Longhorns were able to draw six walks against erratic Bobcats starter Chase Baird, who lasted only 2.2 innings.

Texas fared much better on the mound — surprising sophomore Nick Kennedy left in the fourth inning after giving up two runs in that frame, but scattered six hits over his 3.2 innings and struck out five opposing hitters. He also didn’t hurt himself in allowing only a single walk.

In relief, Chase Shugart earned his second win of the season by recording one out. Connor Mayes and Tyler Schimpf followed with two scoreless innings apiece in combining for five strikeouts and only one hit allowed, while Blair Henley pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn head coach David Pierce his 23rd win in a Texas uniform.

Last season, the Longhorns won only 25 games total.

With the Easter weekend looming, Texas will start its three-game series against Baylor in Waco on Thursday at 6:35 p.m CT. The Bears are 3-6 so far in conference play.

Can the Longhorns take two or three steps forward this weekend or will there be another disappointment following last weekend’s impressive series victory over nationally-ranked Oklahoma?

Founders Doom 2017 BeerPulse II

[Press Release:]

The imperial IPA aged in bourbon barrels is the third installment in the brewery’s Barrel-Aged Series

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Founders Brewing Co. announced today that they will release Doom, an imperial IPA aged in bourbon barrels, as the next release in the Barrel-Aged Series. Founders last released Doom in 2013 as part of the Backstage Series of beers, and its return is highly anticipated.

Doom is the third release of 2017 in the brewery’s esteemed Barrel-Aged Series, preceded by Frootwood and KBS. In addition to Backwoods Bastard, there are two remaining beers yet to be announced in the series this year.

Doom will be available in the taproom beginning on May 12 with remaining states seeing it shortly thereafter. Doom will have a suggested retail price of $14.99/4-pack 12oz bottles and $11.99/750mL bottle.

“Imperial IPA and barrel-aging – two of our greatest strengths coming together to create the masterpiece we call Doom,” said Co-Founder and President, Dave Engbers. “This is a huge beer with a big attitude. We are so happy to bring this beer back for those who have been vocal in asking for its return and we look forward to introduce it to those who haven’t yet had the opportunity to try it.”

Founders will announce the remaining two releases in the Barrel-Aged Series later in the year.

About Founders Brewing Co.

Established in 1997 by two craft beer enthusiasts—Dave Engbers and Mike Stevens—with day jobs and a dream, Founders Brewing Co. brews complex, in-your-face ales, with huge aromatics and tons of flavor. The annual BAFTA game awards were held at London's Tobacco Dock last night, celebrating the best software and creative, talented individuals from 2016. Playdead's quiet, thought-provoking Inside was easily the most successful, picking up the awards for artistic achievement, game design, narrative and original property. Fellow indie Firewatch took home best debut game, while Virginia was recognised for its music and That Dragon, Cancer won the game innovation category. Four-player frenzy Overcooked also had a good evening, winning the best family and British game awards.

Bruichladdich Releases Three 10 Year Old Whiskies, Plus Black Art V

by Susannah Skiver Barton
Emahlstadt

OMFG Laddie Ten is back.

Islay’s Bruichladdich Distillery is rolling out three limited-edition 10 year old single malts—The Laddie 10, Port Charlotte, and Octomore—as well as its fifth edition of Black Art. Read on for details.

BRU_TheLaddieTen_10Y0_ED2_R2016_750_WhiteBGBruichladdich The Laddie 10 Second Limited Edition
Style: Single malt scotch
Origin: Islay
Proof: 50% ABV
Price: $66
Release: March 2017
Availability: 18,000 bottles for the world

Need to know: Distilled in 2006 from 100% Scottish barley, this unpeated whisky was matured in first-fill ex-bourbon, sherry, and French wine casks. It’s coloring-free and non-chill filtered.

Whisky Advocate says: Once upon a time, the Laddie 10 was a standard release, but it went to limited-edition status a few years ago. This one scored an 89 in our Spring 2017 Buying Guide.

PCH_10Y0_ED2_R2016_750_WhiteBGBruichladdich Port Charlotte Second Limited Edition
Style: Single malt scotch
Origin: Islay
Proof: 50% ABV
Price: $70
Release: March 2017
Availability: 18,000 bottles for the world

Need to know: Also distilled in 2006 from 100% Scottish barley, it was matured in first-fill bourbon, sherry, Tempranillo, and French wine casks. This whisky is heavily peated (40 PPM), non-chill filtered, and without added coloring.

Whisky Advocate says: Like the Laddie 10, Port Charlotte has evolved over the years and is now a limited-edition release.

OCT_10YO_ED2_R2016_750_WhiteBGBruichladdich Octomore 10 year old
Style: Single malt scotch
Origin: Islay
Proof: 57.3% ABV
Price: $235
Release: March 2017
Availability: 18,000 bottles for the world

Need to know: Distilled in 2006 with all-Scottish barley and bottled in 2016, this second limited-edition Octomore is a blend of 60% whisky matured in first-fill bourbon barrels and 40% whisky matured in Grenache Blanc casks. It clocks in at 167 PPM and is non-chill filtered with natural coloring.

Whisky Advocate says: People who love Octomore don’t need our advice here. This latest entry in the “most heavily peated whisky series” (according to Bruichladdich) will make peatheads very happy.

BlackArt_E05_R1992_R2016_750_WhiteBG (1)Bruichladdich Black Art V
Style: Single malt scotch
Origin: Islay
Proof: 48.4% ABV
Price: $399
Release: April 2017
Availability: 12,000 bottles for the world

Need to know: The fifth release of Bruichladdich’s unpeated Black Art is 24 years old. It was matured in American oak and “premium wine casks” and is non-chill filtered with no coloring added.

Whisky Advocate says: Bruichladdich likes to be mysterious with this whisky, which is why we don’t have information about the barrels used for maturation beyond “premium wine casks.” But we do know that former master distiller Jim McEwan developed the recipe for Black Art V before retiring in 2015 and gave it to current head distiller Adam Hannett—who ignored it in favor of making the whisky in his own way.

Coming Distractions: New Doctor Who promo teases Peter Capaldi’s regeneration

by Sam Barsanti
Emahlstadt

its like the doctor who producers are committed to hiring the most unfortunate-to-look-at british actors of all time to play the doctor

Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor will be leaving Doctor Who after its upcoming season, which means we’ll be getting yet another heart-wrenching regeneration scene at some point this year. History says it will probably come during the show’s annual Christmas special in December, but this new promo released by BBC America sure wants you to think otherwise. The short clip mostly consists of typical Doctor Who shenanigans, like alien monsters, weird robots, Missy doing an evil dab, and a bunch of old-school Cybermen, but if you stick around until the end you just might see some familiar golden sparkles emanating from The Doctor’s hand.

Doctor Who will return to BBC America on April 15.

Your perfect beer day in: Asheville, North Carolina

by Zach Fowle
Emahlstadt

makes me wanna visit asheville

Asheville Brewing Co.

ashevillebrewing.com

9 a.m.
Start your day off with what the locals calls Southern hospitality (and the rest of us call delicious, sugar-stuffed, fried food) at the Tupelo Honey Cafe. The NC staple now has 14 locations across six states, but the best of them is still the original in downtown Asheville. You’re going to be doing some major-league drinking later on, so grab something filling and absorbent like the Shoo Mercy Sweet Potato Pancake, a hubcap-sized flapjack served with fried chicken, apple cider bacon, pecans, two fried eggs, apples, blueberries and a golf ball of butter. Don’t get coffee yet, though; that’s coming up next.

10:30 a.m.
Coffee at Vortex Doughnuts will help you fight off the nap that pancake wants you to take. Get the Nola, a chicory-infused cold brew sweetened with cream, and, if you still have room, try one of the Rotating Tap Donuts featuring icing made with local beer.

Vortex Doughnuts Rotating Tap

The Rotating Tap doughnut made with Catawba Brewing Co.’s Irish Stout.

11 a.m.
Time to start drinking. Asheville Brewing Co. opens at 11 a.m. every day except Sunday, so it’s your best bet for a pre-afternoon pint downtown. The brewery’s grapefruity flagship Shiva IPA is always a solid choice, but also look out for newer releases like the Nitro Ninja Latte, a caffeinated version of ABC’s World Beer Cup gold-winning Ninja Porter. Take your pint out to the huge covered patio and catch a game on the giant projector screen, if one’s on.

Noon
It’s a quick walk over to New Belgium’s production facility. Grab a glass or a flight in the Liquid Center tasting room and head outside to the wood deck overlooking the French Broad River. If the weather’s warm, you’re in for some solid people-watching: the river fills with tubers floating lazily (and drunkenly) each summer. Sign up for a tour of the massive facility if you’re up for it; they’re offered every half-hour.

Wedge Brewing Co.

1:30 p.m.
New Belgium helped develop a lovely little walking path along the French Broad; use it to head south and across the river toward Asheville’s River Arts District. Here you’ll find art studios and graffiti galore, but the masterpiece you’re looking for is The Hogzilla, a beastly sandwich combining candied bacon, kielbasa and pulled pork only available at 12 Bones Smokehouse. Try it with some of the housemade blueberry chipotle barbecue sauce (which local ice cream cafe The Hop has used to make an ice cream that is simply unreal) and wash it down with an Iron Rail IPA, a floral and malt-sweet British IPA from Wedge Brewing Co., located right next door.

3:30 p.m.
A one-mile walk northeast will take you to a cluster of breweries: Burial Beer Co., Catawba Brewing Co., Green Man Brewery, Twin Leaf Brewery and Wicked Weed Brewing’s sour-focused facility, The Funkatorium. Have at them.

Wicked Weed Funkatorium

One of many, many barrels at Wicked Weed’s Funkatorium.

7 p.m.
Time for dinner. The upscale food and funky aesthetic at one-year-old Bhramari Brewhouse is the perfect exclamation point for the day’s eating. Start with a pickled egg—sunflower-yellow and beautifully plated with colorful swirls of hot sauce, herb aioli and orange marmelade—and pair it with The Good Fight, a sour pale ale that’s much more pale ale than sour (just the way we like it). The garlicky, melony Lorelei IPA will also prove a worthy match for the brewpub’s Crispy Duck Breast, glazed with an orange-ham sauce and dusted with mushroom powder.

Bhramari Brewhouse pickled egg

The pickled egg at Bhramari Brewhouse.

9 p.m.
The urban beer garden/Asian fusion restaurant/convenience store/beer and sake brewery Ben’s Tune-Up is mere blocks away; saunter over for a glass of the nama genshu—aka Heavy—a sweet, 17% ABV sake that tastes like bruised pear with a finish of white rice and banana peel. It’s often carbonated and served on draft with several fruit/spice treatments, including pineapple-jalapeño, lemon-ginger, strawberry-cucumber and Creamsicle—get one of those if you see it.

10 p.m.
Hi-Wire Brewing is right next door to Ben’s. It closes at 11 p.m. most weekdays, so drop in for a quick draft pour of the classic Lager and check if any bottles from the Single Barrel Series of wild ales pulled from a single oak barrel are available; grab some if they are.

11 p.m.
Close out the night scene at One World Brewing. Located under a burger restaurant, this basement brewery is decorated with hanging terrariums (terraria?) and lit with Edison bulbs and Christmas lights. It’s a cool, dark, woody, funky space with the feel of a dive bar in your buddy’s basement. Hoppy brews dominate the 10 taps; the best of them is the Citra-Bomb IPA, bittered solely with the eponymous hop variety. A fridge full of pre-filled crowlers is there if you want to take some home and keep this thing going, but you probably want to sleep. It’s been a long day.

Interesting. Too bad Hideo Kojima does not make art OR video games, but rather some twisted pieces of interactive flaming garbage that appeals to Japanese-fetishist man-boys. Hope this works out for them.

Tribeca was the first film festival to embrace video games as a storytelling medium, showcasing the world premiere of detective game L.A. Noire nearly six years ago. Now, the organization is teaming up with publication Kill Screen to launch the inaugural Tribeca Games Festival. Running April 28-29 during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, it will feature some prominent members of the gaming industry, including legendary Metal Gear developer Hideo Kojima.

"In a remote West African village, a revolutionary genetic experiment is on its way — if residents agree to it"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
SN:
ANA, Burkina Faso — This small village of mud-brick homes in West Africa might seem the least likely place for an experiment at the frontier of biology.

Yet scientists here are engaged in what could be the most promising, and perhaps one of the most frightening, biological experiments of our time. They are preparing for the possible release of swarms of mosquitoes that, until now, have been locked away in a research lab behind double metal doors and guarded 24/7.

The goal: to nearly eradicate the population of one species of mosquito, and with it, the heavy burden of malaria across Africa.

These scientists are planning to release mosquitoes equipped with “gene drives,” a technology that overrides nature’s genetic rules to give every baby mosquito a certain trait that normally only half would acquire. Once such an insect gets out into the wild, it will move indiscriminately and spread its modified trait without respect for political borders.

Report: Texas has made contact with Notre Dame graduate transfer QB Malik Zaire

I get that the Merrick departure creates a depth issue, but I also get the feeling that Herman isn't especially pleased with either of his starting QB options currently on campus.

The fact that he isn't really talking one way or the other about either of them is also troubling.

We know he loves the hard work of the WRs and that the DL is a bunch of "fat guys" but he hasn't said one thing about QBs other than the Merrick news and that the battle is ongoing. Not a good sign.

The former Longhorns staff saw the best (and worst) of Zaire during his time with the Golden Domers.

After the announcement that former LSU Tigers quarterback Brandon Harris is headed to the North Carolina Tar Heels following a weekend visit, the Texas Longhorns reportedly reached out to former Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Malik Zaire, according to Horns Digest.

The graduate transfer becomes the newest target of head coach Tom Herman, who is seeking quarterback depth after redshirt sophomore Matthew Merrick retired from football last week to focus on his academics.

A former starter in South Bend, Zaire torched the ‘Horns with a 19-of-22 performance through the air to rack up 313 yards and three touchdowns in the 2015 season-opening blowout that ended Shawn Watson’s play-calling career at Texas.

Zaire then suffered a season-ending injury in the next game against Virginia and ultimately lost his job to DeShone Kizer. And though he split time with Kizer in last season’s opener, the double-overtime victory by the Longhorns in Austin, Zaire played sparingly during the rest of his junior season.

In the months since announcing his intention to become a graduate transfer, he’s placed UNC and Wisconsin under consideration, but indefinitely postponed a decision that was planned for December 20.

With Baylor reportedly getting into the mix at that time and UNC no longer an option, Wisconsin may be the leader for Zaire after he considered the school during his original recruitment. However, it’s not clear what is holding up his decision.

And both of those schools have incumbent starters, though Badgers quarterback Alex Hornibrook was hardly impressive last season in throwing eight touchdowns and seven interceptions — that situation is probably more appealing for Zaire than transferring to Texas, where Shane Buechele experienced a much greater level of success.

A 6’0, 225-pounder, Zaire was a consensus four-star prospect ranked as the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the 247Sports Composite rankings as a member of the 2013 recruiting class.

Texas QB competition heats up between Shane Buechele and Sam E...

Team Shane? Team Sam? How about Team Longhorns? There's no question Texas will benefit from the competition between the two best passers in a decade.

dat album art tho

Konami’s Castlevania series of monster-mauling video games turned 30 last year, and the folks at Mondo have been celebrating by producing stunning vinyl editions of its classic soundtracks. Both the original game and Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest have already been covered—interested parties can still nab a copy of the latter—and today, Mondo has released its first pressing of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. The third and final Castlevania game on the NES, its soundtrack is one of the series’ best, a legendary 8-bit score that introduced staples like “Beginning,” “Mad Forest,” and “Clockwork.” Mondo’s vinyl edition includes both the American and Japanese versions of the soundtrack, as the original Japanese release used advanced sound hardware for denser instrumentation. Both records come packaged inside a badass sleeve, with the interior art sporting renditions of the game’s levels.

According to Mondo, it has two more Castlevania ...

Tom Herman confirms he’s recruiting grad transfer QB Brandon Harris to Texas

by Wescott Eberts

well, this is getting interesting

The ‘Horns are trying to get the former LSU passer on campus in early April.

While the crucial North Carolina Tar Heels visit looms this weekend for former LSU Tigers quarterback Brandon Harris, the Texas Longhorns continue to pursue the Louisiana native, head coach Tom Herman confirmed on Monday.

According to Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods, Herman is targeting the first weekend in April to get Harris to Austin for a return visit — he trained at Westlake last summer with quarterback guru George Whitfield.

Harris is attempting to fit his visits around his father’s schedule, so he doesn’t yet have firm travel plans as the ‘Horns appear to be a second option, behind the Tar Heels but ahead of the Arizona Wildcats and a group of other schools.

Depth chart considerations are playing a major role in that positioning for Texas, but Harris likes what he finds when he reads between the lines with the Longhorns.

“I am not saying how coach Herman is thinking, because I don’t know how he thinks, or how coach (Tim) Beck (offensive coordinator) thinks, but I don’t see any situation where a guy brings a senior in for one year to sit on the bench,” Harris told OB. “I’m not saying they are promising me anything. I haven’t been promised anything. I’m just saying, rationally speaking, in most scenarios if you think you’re solid at quarterback, and I don’t know what they think. You probably know more than I do, but if they think they’re solid at quarterback, they probably don’t do that.”

The new system Herman is installing at Texas gives Harris a better shot at joining the program during the summer and making an impact on the depth chart — sophomore Shane Buechele, the incumbent starter, and early enrollee Sam Ehlinger are both learning it themselves this spring.

And Herman doesn’t plan on naming a starter before or after the spring-ending Orange and White game on April 15, as the competition is slated to last through the early part of preseason camp.

In addition to the pre-existing relationship between Herman and Harris dating back to the former LSU starter’s recruitment out of Shreveport, Harris is friends with former Houston quarterback Greg Ward and believes that he could learn the offense quickly after commanding a complicated pro-style attack employed by the Tigers that included “300 to 400 plays.”

“I don’t think it will be difficult at all,” Harris said. “Let’s just say I want to go to Texas, and we get everything lined out. They could send me their playbook and I can begin to learn it. Like I said, I don’t think it will be that difficult to learn it because I know what it’s like to master a pro-style system.”

In fact, Harris cited former LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings and NC State-turned-Wisconsin standout Russell Wilson as players who quickly made the transition to new schools.

With Harris hungry to play in an offense that actually makes use of the skill set that made him the consensus No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the country out of Parkway High School in 2014, he sees Texas as an opportunity to showcase his skills.

For the Longhorns, Herman likely sees Harris as another option to continue to push Buechele, insurance against being forced to burn the redshirt season of Ehlinger if Buechele gets banged up, and as a potential starter based on his experience and significant skill set.

On those latter points, don’t get caught up on what Harris did at LSU in a system that eventually resulted in the termination of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and head coach Les Miles — project his talent into an offense that can maximize his ability, then consider his potential impact on the quarterback room.

After that mental exercise, consider the fact that Herman, as usual, has a plan, and it’s one worth trusting because the potential rewards well outweigh the minimal risk involved.

Newswire: Patrick Stewart uses marijuana every single day

by Sean O'Neal

Were it not already obvious from his starring role in Blunt Talk, that time he put on a lobster costume and hopped in the bath, his inability to stop giggling over a dumb Christmas hat, or his recent loving, languorous petting of a pitbull, Sir Patrick Stewart uses weed, like, every single day. The 76-year-old actor recently released a statement lending his support to a new initiative undertaken by Oxford University to explore medicinal cannabis, the first of its kind in the UK, revealing that he’s partaken of marijuana daily for the past two years to treat his arthritis. It’s a bold public stance that Stewart hopes will help to remove the “prejudice, fear, and ignorance” surrounding cannabis research, which has until now been held back by an uptight British populace that desperately needs to pick it, pack it, fire it up, and come along as researchers investigate ...
