Stop Motion Animation Reveals the Insides of Objects Sanded Down Layer by Layer video art stop motion animation

As a quick follow-up to our video from Keith Skretch yesterday, here’s a similar concept from two years ago by Laurin Döpfner who used an industrial sander to grind down logs, electronics, and even a skull in thin layers which he then photographed to create this amazing stop motion video. Each object is comprised of about 100 different photos, a process I can only image was extremely labor intensive.

This will be trending on /r/ThingsCutInHalfPorn/ by the end of the day if it hasn’t already. While you’re at it see also @HalfPics, and for the not so faint of heart there’s the Visible Human Project. (via Jason Sondhi)

FarmCity Fresh Cart – New Open-Air Urban Grocery Cart Launches in Vancouver

by vanessa

farmcityfresh

Have you ever seen a Farmer’s Market on wheels?  Beginning today, the freshness of the farm comes direct to the city as FarmCity Fresh Cart makes its debut on the streets of downtown Vancouver and New Westminster.

A partnership between Re-Up BBQ and FarmCity Co-op, FarmCity Fresh Cart is a groundbreaking, farmers’ market-inspired kiosk featuring an ever-changing bounty of local, sustainably farmed fruit and produce as well as products and snacks prepared by local businesses.

In addition to fruit and vegetables available in both bulk and pre-packaged portions, FarmCity Fresh Cart offers pastured eggs, local honey, preserves, sodas made from locally farmed fruit and an assortment of snacks and salads. Visitors will also be able to purchase take-home products such as bacon and cured meat from Re-Up BBQ, cocktail bitters and culinary extracts from Bittered Sling, seeds and merchandise from Victory Gardens, artisan pasta from Pasta Famiglia and cold-pressed juice from SPUD, as well as meat and deli products from pastured animals, prepared by local chefs.

“FarmCity Fresh Cart is an innovative, grassroots means of nurturing and growing a network that links urban farms with local restaurants and consumers,” says Re-up BBQ co-partner Lindsay Kaisaris. “We’re excited for the collaboration that the Fresh Cart brings — we’re able to pool crucial resources to help generate profits and exposure for local farmers and small businesses that may not have had the same opportunity on their own.”

FarmCity Fresh Cart will regularly appear on the corner of Hornby and West Georgia Streets in downtown Vancouver, most weekdays from 11am to 2pm.  In New Westminster, FarmCity Fresh Cart will be at Hyack Square most weekday evenings from 4pm to 6:30pm, and on Saturdays.

In addition, Vancouverites will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the FarmCity Fresh Cart and meet some of its parters and suppliers on Sunday July 20 (from 4pm to 10pm) when Urban Digs Farm in South Burnaby hosts an all-ages open house and BBQ with live music and drinks. Tickets and further details are available via Eventbrite.

Those interested in keeping track of the Fresh Cart’s whereabouts can follow @CityFreshCart on Twitter. For further information, visit farmcity.coop/fresh-cart.

Yes, these are paintings. The intricate graphic op-art style paintings by New York-based artist Johnny Abrahams are blowing my mind. They’re super detailed, they look near-perfect as if created by a computer, and they’re totally messing with my eyeballs. But I can’t look away…

The Abyss Table by Christopher Duffy for Duffy London

The visuals on The Abyss Table are more than enough to make your jaw drop, which is no surprise given Duffy London’s history for clever, unforgettable designs. This time, Christopher Duffy is taking you straight to the depths of the ocean with a dramatic coffee table that will never cease being a conversation piece.

Pairing layers of wood and glass, the table becomes a geological cross section of the ocean, showing various depths.

After a trip to the glass factory and seeing how thick glass darkened the more layers added, much like the way the sea does as the ocean floor becomes deeper, Duffy used this effect to show a piece of the ocean’s bed. The team spent a year experimenting with sculpted glass, Perspex, and wood to achieve the three-dimensional model of a geological map with the final result being a mesmerizing, abyss-like, sculptural table.

The Abyss Table is made by hand upon order and is limited to an edition of 25. Each piece is made from sustainable materials.

6 Apartment Gardening Tips for Downtown Vancouver

by vanessa
Prettocraig

@dani....seems so easy!

apartment gardening basil

As a downtown Vancouver resident, I don’t have any access to outdoor gardening space but still want to be able to grow herbs for cooking, so year after year, I’ve been growing basil on my windowsill.  Indoor plants (and the pretty plant pot they are in) can help improve the aesthetics of your space and can provide you with a wealth of yummy, edible foods all summer long.  Here are some tips and tricks for growing indoor plants if you live in an apartment in downtown Vancouver:

  1. Adequate sunlight. This isn’t a problem for me because I live in an apartment with big windows.  Make sure to keep your plants within two to three feet of a sunny window. Most plants will require at least six hours of sunlight a day, so choose a window that will have enough exposure to the sun. Also, because plants naturally turn to the light, make sure to rotate your plant every week to help it to grow straight.
  2. Temperature. Plants typically grow best when the temperature of your apartment/condo is between 18 to 21 degrees Celsius during the day and a couple degrees cooler at night.  Make sure not to put your plants near an air conditioning unit or vents as the cold temperature of the air may produce plants that have yellow or brown leaves that will fall off.
  3. Sufficient water. Be careful not to overwater which can cause your plant roots to rot. To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger in the pot and if it is damp, wait a couple days before watering again.
  4. Temperature of water. Make sure that you use room temperature water when watering your plants.
  5. Size. While some plants may seem small when you purchase them, once they are mature they can grow too large for a small apartment or condo. Research the plants you are choosing to ensure that even at their maturity they will fit indoors.
  6. Choose the right type of plants. Basil is my personal favourite indoor plant to grow because there are so many uses for this herb and it’s easy to maintain.  If you don’t want to start from the seed, Superstore has a Grafted Greek Basil Tree from President’s Choice, which is already leafy and ready for harvesting.  Parsley, oregano and rosemary are other good options for apartment gardening.

Thanks to Peter Cantley, vice-president, Floral & Garden, Loblaw Companies Limited and mypcgarden.ca for the tips!
