UpSki Snow Parachute Ditches the Chairlifts for an Adrenaline-Filled Trip Up the Mountain

by Morgana Matus

@kurt. you are literally the only person i can see ever trying this.

ski, snowboard, upski, parachute, carbondale, colorado, chairlift, winter sports, kickstarter campaign, ski slope, ski resort, backcountry skiing

For some winter sports fanatics, sitting on a chairlift is wasted time that could be better spent dominating the slopes. A team of designers in Colorado have invented the UpSki to offer skiers a fun and exciting new way to get to the top of the mountain. Sourced and assembled in the United States, the parachute harnesses the wind to take skiiers and snowboarders to the pinnacle of their favorite runs.

When teams from around the world battle it out on the field for the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil, spectators and athletes alike will also have to contend with the specter of dengue fever. The most severe form of the illness, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, can cause death in one out of four that are infected. As the host cities of Natal, Fortaleza, and Salvador prepare to welcome visitors, they will have to keep a careful watch on insects that spread the deadly virus.

SMOKE BREAK #1079: The Teacher You Wish You Had Showing How Gravity Works

by Scout Magazine
danipretto

why do they all go the same way??? WHY?

Dan Burns, a high school physics teacher in Northern California since 1992, explains how gravity and space-time warping work at a teaching workshop at Los Gatos High School.

Stretch a sheet of lycra over a drum shape made out of PVC and electrical conduit. Put a 2kg mass in the middle and roll marbles to show orbits. Put 2 large metal spheres on it and they will slowly attract. Put a large marble rolling with a smaller one next to it and it will orbit the larger marble mimicking the Earth-Moon system. Throw a handful of marbles going one way and a slightly larger handful going the other. They collide and fall in, leaving most of the survivors all going in the same direction, just like the formation of the solar system. Put 2, 2kg masses apart from each other and try and get a marble to do a figure 8 orbit around them both. Have a pole stick up from below creating a force of repulsion and you have Dark Energy.

Dunton Hot Springs: hotel of the week

by Laura House
danipretto

"hot springs heaven"
Let's GO!

Dunton Hot Springs / hotel of the weekHiding out in Colorado’s dramatic San Juan Mountains is Dunton Hot Springs resort. This clutch of kitted-out cabins in a movie-set-worthy restored ghost town is our idea of a Wild West adventure. We aren’t the only ones who think so, either – this nature-lover’s retreat just took the prize for Greatest Outdoors in our first ever Smith Awards.

Style Luxury log cabins
Setting Hot springs heaven

Dunton Hot Springs/ Mr & Mrs Smith Why this week? Oh wait, what’s that – are those fluffy flakes falling outside the window? Yes! Ski season is finally here. And around these parts there’s a run (several, actually – and wide open, too) – for everyone from thrill-seeking heli-skiiers to those looking to cruise the mellow trails at Telluride Mountain. Book right now for stays before 20 December  2013 and bunk in a luxe cabin four nights for the price of three. Oh, and just to sweeten the deal you’ll also be treated to a romantic dinner in your cabin along with a bottle of wine from the hotel’s own vineyard. Or, you might well be tempted by a five-night ultimate ski holiday package (heli-skiing, backcountry adventures, downhill ski passes, signature couples’ massage) in partnership with Holt Renfrew.

Dunton Hot Springs/ Mr & Mrs Smith hotels Our favourite bits… Restorative hot springs, a winding river and the San Juan Mountains make up the impressive outdoor surroundings. And guests will find that the old village has all of the indoor perks they need too, including a saloon, dance hall and bath house. Each cabin or tent is handsomely decorated in hand-picked period antiques and all have heated slate floors and unique bath tubs.

Mr & Mrs Smith say… ’After miles of gravel road flanked by soaring aspens, verdant pines, lilac-coloured columbines and the Dolores River, an 1880s mining town appears, like something out of Legends of the Fall. And though we aren’t greeted by Brad Pitt, the amicable assistant manager of Dunton Hot Springs, Melanie, aptly fills his shoes, instructing us to leave our luggage and head for the communal lunch table.

Three farm-fresh courses ensue, each more artfully engineered than the previous one. Mr Smith and I feast on arugula salad flecked with parmesan, grilled bok choy over red-curry chicken and freshly baked almond shortbread paired with cantaloupe sorbet. If only all camp food was this good’…. Read the full anonymous review of Dunton Hot Springs.

DINER | Highly Anticipated “Fish Counter” Seafood Shop & Eatery Opens On Saturday

by Scout Magazine
danipretto

nom nom. let's go see on sat @craig

IMG_2858

by Andrew Morrison | When Scout first broke the news about The Fish Counter coming to 3825 Main St. this past June, we were pretty excited. I mean, wow…a fishmongers from Rob Clark and Mike McDermid, the two founders of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program!? What could possibly be better than a sustainability-savvy and doubt-free fish store where the staff knew the fishermen? How about a fish store that not only does all of that but also dresses up the catch and cooks it for you, too.

Yup, there’s a tidy food-service component to The Fish Counter, too. You can choose your battered fish and local Kennebec chips from a list that includes salmon, halibut, ling cod, and oysters. These can be ordered to eat in or take away. Chances are you’ll want to stick around and watch for the first little while, because the guy doing the cooking at the start is none other than Ian Johansen, who is not only the brother of Cpt. Steve Johansen of the good ship Organic Ocean (co-founder of the Spot Prawn Festival), but also a capable cook at Go Fish! on False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf, which is incidentally home to Vancouver’s best fish and chips (for now).

They’ll also be serving three soups – a New England clam chowder without wheat or dairy, a vegan option, and a seafood special soup du jour. We can also expect to see Baha-style fish tacos made with ling cod and “Salmonitos” – a cylindrical, burrito-ish wrap of salmon, slaw and chipotle mayo (nice rice or beans).

On the retail side of things, they’re offering branded/prepared meals like nicoise salad (minus the tuna – you build your own at home with the tuna you buy at the shop), fish cakes. crab cakes, mac and cheese, et cetera, plus prepared seafoods like octopus salad, poached salmon, smoked salmon, candied salmon, and so on. There’s a two-level glass display case for fresh fish, plus boxes for live crabs and lobster that will go online in a few weeks.

This was a hard, long slog for Rob and Mike. The construction was a lot more than I think they both expected (they’re five months past their first “hopefully open by” date), but in the end it looks like they’ve done a fantastic job, even with the little details like the garage window frontage and the octopus carved into the bench. They’re opening “for certain” this Saturday. Hours will probably by 10am to 10pm, but that’s not yet set in stone (“The community will let us know when they need us,” Rob says.) Break a leg, fellas! We wish you the very best of luck!

Man Rescued From Shipwreck 3-Days After Boat Went Down By Surviving In Tiny Air Pocket

danipretto

whoa

sunken-boat-rescue.jpg This is the rescue video of Harrison Okene, a Nigerian cook working on the Jascon 4 tug boat when it sank during a tanker-towing operation. Harrison survived three days sitting alone in the pitch black at a depth of 30-meters in cold water and a small air pocket created when the ship sunk. Sadly, Harrison's 11 other crew members perished. Hit the jump for the amazing video, but skip to 5:00 for the rescue to begin. The diver sounds like a chipmunk because he's breathing an oxygen/helium mix. And the guy in charge of the operation, well, he sounds like the exact kind of guy you want in charge of this sort of thing.

When MIT unveiled designs for the Copenhagen Wheel in 2009, it generated a lot of buzz. The deceptively simple, self-contained system can turn any bike into a “smart electric hybrid” cycle by providing a kinetic boost for riders. Four years passed—during which time the Copenhagen Wheel received a handy, high-profile publicity boost as part of a plot line on the HBO’s Weeds—and now Massachusetts-based company Superpedestrian is finally accepting pre-orders for the wheel.

The GOODS from Campagnolo

Vancouver, BC | Campagnolo Restaurant turns 5 years old on Thursday, December 5. To honour the birthday, Campagnolo will be giving away free Crispy Ceci to all tables of 2 or more to complement their order. In 5 years, the Main Street restaurant has sold enough Crispy Ceci to stretch over 40km. That is enough to go around the seawall twice, line the Sun Run 4 times and to reach Crescent Beach from 1020 Main Street. Can’t make it in on Thursday? Don’t worry. You can celebrate at home with our recipe for Crispy Ceci, which you will find after the jump. From our kitchen to yours, grazie…

Crispy Ceci Recipe

(feeds 6)

1½c dried chickpeas, soaked overnight in water
2c baby arugula
1c baby spinach
¼c fresh mint, torn into small pieces
2 scallions, sliced thin on a bias
¼c Italian parsley, leaves sliced thin
1½tsp chili flakes
1 lemon, zested and juiced
2tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Salt
6c canola oil

- Take the soaked chickpeas and cook them in fresh water until very tender. Season with salt at the end of the cooking process. The cooking time (45 to 60 minutes) will vary according to the age of the chickpeas. Once cooked, they can be kept in the fridge for up to two days.

- In a pot that can hold at least 12c (the more the better) bring the canola oil to a temperature of 375F. Drain the chickpeas, dry them on paper towels and then slowly pour them into the hot oil.

- While they are cooking, add to a large bowl the arugula, spinach, scallion, mint and parsley. After about four minutes of frying, remove the chickpeas and drain well. While they are still very hot, add them to the bowl of greens.

- Season everything with salt, chilies, lemon zest, juice and, finally, the extra virgin olive oil.

- Toss very well and check for seasoning. Add more of anything you like, divide among six warm bowls and serve.

A crowd of over 1,000 cyclists gathered outside Transport for London headquarters on Friday to protest what they say is dangerous transport infrastructure in the city. The protest comes after a rough month for London bike riders: in the course of just two weeks, six cyclists were killed in collisions with motor vehicles, prompting outrage and calls for change from the city’s cycling community. Still, no one stepped in to to organize a mass protest until Mayor Boris Johnson responded to the crisis by placing the blame for fatal accidents on cyclists, implying that deaths could be avoided if cyclists simply obeyed the rules of the road.

Well first I have to coax him out of the barn with an apple! Get it? I hope you don't, I hope you just think I'm stupid. Hit the jump for a couple more pictures and a video in case this concept is blowing your ridiculous little mind, then just mount lasers to the back of your saddle like a normal person.

I Thought It Was A Pine Cone: The Game Of Thrones Dragon Egg Cookie Jar

danipretto

the best part about the year ending? it's almost time for more GOT!

game-of-thrones-dragon-egg-cookie-jar.jpg What are those, store-brand chocolate chippers? NO THANKS. This is the $30 Game of Thrones Dragon Egg Cookie Jar available from ThinkGeek. The paint job leaves a little something to be desired, so I suggest repainting it yourself if you buy one. Just be sure to use lead-free paints though, because the last thing you need is to get fat AND lead poisoned from too many cookies. Back me up, Cookie Monster! Cookie Monster? COOKIE MONSTER, WHAT HAPPENED?! "Me eat bad cookie." *sniffing* That's because it's a f***ing cat turd, where did you find this? "In the litterbox." That's it, your blue ass is going to rehab. Keep going for one more shot of a fake Mother of Dragons holding the thing.
