I would give up eating for the next two days to own that dog.

For the bobble head, I would take a shot of rum and not grimace.

by nickdivers

As some of you may remember, George got this text from his boss on tuesday night. Like you, we have been scratching our heads all day trying to decipher it.

What could this mean? What message was he sending to his wife? Is she in trouble? Was he ordering dinner?

This is the best that we have come up with:

Nick
STORY:
A young chick sees a princess and falls in love with her. Unfortunately, this princess has eyes for another. She is in love with another, older, stronger, more popular High School chicken. Unfortunately, this chicken does not love the princess. This chicken just loves to party.

MEANING:
George’s Boss wants to remind his wife that even the younger, uncool chicken will one day be in high school. He will also be as strong and as cool as the older chicken. But this younger chicken, instead of loving to party, would have loved her all along and had eyes for only her! Basically, he is telling her that she needs to be patient. She wants the best things for their family, but he knows that these things take time and they are not worth just chasing, lest you forget about the things in life worth knowing and cultivating now.

George
STORY:
Princess meets infant chicken. Princess falls in love with infant chicken. Princess and chicken allow their love to foster. They celebrate their first chicken-human hybrid birth with a party.

MEANING:
My Boss is drunk.

Please, help us get to the bottom of this.

Lindsaycdavison

YAY congrats on tablet! that's huge!!

John Speranza
Vancouver, April, 2013

In the States we tend to think of Vancouver as something like BC’s answer to San Francisco, or the Hollywood to Toronto’s New York. The reality, of course, is a little more complicated than any of these shorthand renderings. It’s a unique mix: Northwest beauty, West Coast mellowness, a dash of film-industry glamour, and a certain individualistic spirit that’s common to places settled by adventurers. The best way to get a handle on Vancouver’s character is to visit; and while every visit is unique, we’ve put together a little tasting menu, offering three ways to do it.

THE BURRARD
Arrive in your own car; this is a classic mid-century motor lodge, and it still looks the part. These days you’ll park underground, as the central courtyard is now a raised garden terrace, ringed by colorful rows of guest room doors. What’s behind those doors? Simple, stylish rooms — basic by boutique standards, but far better than you’d expect at the Burrard’s price point. In-room amenities include 42-inch HDTVs and automatic espresso makers, which, along with the hotel’s own ground-floor café, ought to be enough to get you started before you rent a bike and hit the streets. Try the exquisite espresso at Revolver in Gastown and consider pausing street-side for aJapadog — more or less exactly what it sounds like — before beginning your caffeine-fueled ride along the Stanley Parkseawall.

hey brother! let's celebrate arrested development coming back!

by KIMMIE JONES
Lindsaycdavison

Can't wait!

[Tangent/Prologue: I'm not gonna pretend that I was super hip or watched Arrested Development when it aired in 2003. At the time I was in college, and the only shows I watched with a fervor were The OC, American Idol and Trading Spaces. Clearly I was edgy as hell!]

It's been a couple years since I've power watched Arrested Development from beginning to end. The first time I marathoned them was right before I went to visit my brother in Orange County, so of course I felt like I was gonna run into the Bluth Frozen Banana Stand at any moment. However, Since I watched them all at once and it's been a while, I feel like there is a lot I have forgotten about.  [Tangent: Every so often, one of my friends will make a reference and I won't get it or I'll get a flashing memory of the time Michael dated a mentally impaired Charlize Theron or a visually impaired Julia Louis Dreyfus...and be like, "oh yeah. That happened!"] So to orient myself and prepare myself for the Netflix release of new episodes on May 26th- [Tangent: WOOOT!] I am rewatching the series again and enjoying it maybe more than I did the first time. [Tangent: In fact, that is what I am doing right now. I am determined to get through them all before the end of the week. I am all about setting and meeting goals, future employers!]

To celebrate the blessed event,  I have decided to do some lazy googling and find my favorite Arrested Development tshirts! There are so many possibilities out there and a lot of them are dumb, but here are some of the ones that made me giggle.

c/o Redbubble
AGGGHHHH! c/o powerup apparel

c/o lame tees

my favorite c/o Joebot on etsy.

from stylin online

this one was ltd on teefury, but you can find it at red bubble

this one was a ltd ed tee fury shirt

a little jepsomism c/o 80s Tees

c/o tee shirt vortex

c/o woot shirt
c/o powerup apparel
...or if you are poor like me and are already own an excessive amount of tshirts, but you want a means to get fired up for the premiere, you need only fire up the printer and print off this Arrested Development version of Clue or  these Bluth family paper dolls from illustrator Kyle Hilton. The Maeby ones are my favorite.

OK, gotta go get back to my Netflix. The Motherboy episode is coming up and that is my favorite!

miss manners: lesson four

by Katie Rose
Lindsaycdavison

Except that bubbly is BEFORE the meal. dessert wine for after. duh.

(what you learn while living in france)

It's time we get back on track with our Miss Manners Lessons.

If you remember, so far we've covered addressing correspondence

as well as the whole opening doors issue.

Today it's time to talk table manners.
I'm sure you know many of these, but it never hurts to have a refresher.
Most of these are ingrained in my brain from a combination of setting the table as a child
and from our sweet House Mom Molly in college.
These fun little ways to remember will hopefully make them ingrained in your brain too!

{LESSON 4: TABLE MANNERS}

Let's start first with setting the table.
The FORK goes to the LEFT of the plate
because F-O-R-K and L-E-F-T have the same number of letters.
The SPOON and KNIFE go to the RIGHT of the plate
because S-P-O-O-N, K-N-I-F-E and R-I-G-H-T have the same number of letters.
-----

Ever have that moment when the table is so crowded that you don't know which water is yours?
Next time just remember B-M-W.
Bread, meal, water.
Your bread plate is on your left. Then your "meal plate".  Then your water glass.
No more drinking another person's water again!

-----

When some one asks for you to please pass the salt, you should also pass the pepper.
Remember that the SALT & PEPPER are married.
They go together, always.
-----

If you're at a family style meal or someone asks you to pass the bread, you should always pass to the right of you, rather than across the table.
Remember, "be polite, pass to the right."
-----

Need to excuse yourself from the table?
Make sure to say "excuse me" and then quietly scoot out from the table,
placing your napkin on your chair.
You should only leave your napkin on the table once you're finished with the meal.
(I hope I don't need to tell you that you should put your napkin in your lap as soon as the hostess does.)
-----

Speaking of finishing your meal, once you're finished eating,
you should turn you fork over on your plate
and lay it and your knife with knife blade facing you diagonally across the plate.
(I've read fork tines can be up or down - what a controversy - but I like tines down. Clearly says you're finished eating.)
This symbolizes to the wait staff that they are free to clear your plate from the table.
-----

And finally, this is in no etiquette book I've ever seen,
but I recommend finishing a nice meal out with a little glass of bubbly. :)
-----

Hope you learned something new!
xoxo,
K

DIY : Black & Gold Pendant Lamp

by Nadia
Lindsaycdavison

LOVE IT

Lately we can see more and more of these lovely black and gold hammered iron pendant lights.

Preciously Me blog : Black & Gold Pendant Lamp
Preciously Me blog : Black & Gold Pendant Lamp
You can find them in different sizes and shapes as well. I think they are especially beautiful above a table or better when there are several of these pendant lamps above a kitchen island like the picture just above that I saw last week in Albertina's post on Heart of Gold and Luxury. So I did not resist and I decided to do this DIY!

Preciously Me blog : DIY Black & Gold Pendant Lamp
To do this I first had to find a hammered metal basis if possible with the same color to avoid having to repaint. You will see that the pendant lamp I made is similar to the one you can see just above on the right.

Preciously Me blog : DIY Black & Gold Pendant Lamp
As usual a small turn visit to Ikea and I found everything I needed!
For this very simple DIY you will need:
- An Angenäm bowl from Ikea (€ 19.95)
- A light cord set also available in Ikea, name Hemma (3.99 €)
- A light bulb

Equipment:
- Drill
- A hole saw

Preciously Me blog : DIY Black & Gold Pendant Lamp
You first have to make a hole with the hole saw on the bottom of the bowl. The diameter of the hole saw I used is 45 mm, it matches the diameter of the electric mount that will be inserted later. If you use a different cord set simply adapt the diameter of your hole saw.

Preciously Me blog : DIY Black & Gold Pendant Lamp
Then put the electric mount or cord set and fix it by screwing from the inside

Preciously Me blog : DIY Black & Gold Pendant Lamp
Put your light bulb and that's it, your pendant lamp is over! Now you only have to hang it wherever you want. I told you that it was very easy and in addition it is also quick to make. A pretty pendant lamp for less than 24 € so why do without it ... If you have a kitchen island or a long table, do not hesitate to make several of these to hang side by side.

If You Want to Follow My Music

by Little Pieces of Light

I've been getting a lot of emails lately asking me about the music that I post on this website and if there is any way to follow my music.  I've mentioned this briefly before, but the main music search site that I use is Hype Machine, which is amazing because it is basically a music blog consolidating platform that shows you which music the top music blogs around the world are posting about lately.  It's the main way I "discover" new tracks out there.

I have an eclectic taste in music:  I listen to everything from indie and electropop to hip-hop and classical music.  At the end of the day, it's about what moves me deeply - either lyrically or musically or both.  I am a passionate music-hunter and concert-goer.

If you are the same, I highly recommend signing up for Hype!  And if you want to know what music I'm listening to currently, you can follow me here.

miss manners: lesson three

by Katie Rose
Lindsaycdavison

@all men.

Specifically my husband. please take note of the cab one, IN PARTICULAR.

Time for this week's Miss Manners post!
I hope you learned from lesson one and two.
Today we're going to discuss something that could seem a bit antiquated, but I think still matters.

Let's begin.
{LESSON THREE:  DOORS}
Now I know the whole "men open the doors for lady" thing seems super old fashioned, and probably something most people don't practice these days.
But I noticed once I moved to New York City that the instances of door-opening are greater since we're constantly getting in and out of cabs and walking in and out of buildings and elevators with other people.

This had me constantly asking "Who opens the door?", "Who gets in first?", "Who gets out first"?

I have the answers for you, my friends.
Let's take this one case at at a time.

-

Here's an easy one.
When entering a building/room, etc., the man should open the door for the lady, wait to let her walk through, and then follow.
(I sincerely hope we all knew that one already.)

-

When getting in to a taxi, the man should open the door.
BUT, here's the kicker:
Most times, both passengers enter the taxi from the same side of the street due to traffic .
(i.e. the man wouldn't open the lady's door and then walk around and get in on the other side)
In this case, the man should get in first and slide over in the back seat.
You never want to make the lady slide across, as it could ruffle her perfectly assembled outfit. :)

-

When going through a revolving door, it is actually the man who goes first, as his brute strength can help propel the door forward so the lady just has to walk and doesn't need to push the door.
(I love this one.)

-

When exiting an elevator, all men should wait and let all women and children exit first.
(i.e. the man shouldn't just wait for his lady to exit, but for all women to exit)
A man should also hold the doors open to ensure they don't start to close as a woman is exiting.
(I'm a stickler for this and give serious judge-y stares to the young men in my building who seem to have failed to learn this lesson)

-----
So, what do you think?
Makes sense, I think.
And I love having my door opened by my gent.
I find it attractive when he follows these rules.

Also, who knew there were so many doors we encounter on a day to day basis?!

xoxo,
K

P.S. In case you missed them, check out lesson one and lesson two of this month's Miss Manners series.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Burrard adds Andy Warhol to its art collection

The Burrard hotel in downtown Vancouver has added a very special new treasure to its art collection with a limited edition diptych of Andy Warhol’s iconic “Marilyn Monroe” (the likes of which has been seen exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum) displayed on Alien Workshop skateboards inside the hotel lobby.

With its signature garden courtyard and retro West Coast style, the Burrard first opened in 1956 when the “Burrard Motor Inn” joined the neon-clad glitz that characterized much of downtown Vancouver until the mid 1970s. At its peak, there was one neon sign for every 18 residents in the city, making Vancouver the neon sign capital of Canada. Dating back to the early 1960s, the Burrard’s classic neon sign is among the last ones left standing today.

This exhibition of limited edition boards is on display in the lobby at The Burrard and has been brought to you as a collaboration between: The Burrard x Color Magazine x Supra Distribution x Alien Workshop x the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Go check it out for yourself and tag it in a photo!

by bestrooftalkever-george
Lindsaycdavison

I feel like coachella is a place where people who dress weird go...oh wait...or is that LA?

“Festivals like this aren’t for people who like music, they’re for people who kind of like the idea of drinking in a crowd in a field near other potential sexual partners, while somewhere off in the distance dancing ants on a stage go through the motions of in-real-time content creation.”

-

From “Going to Cochella? You’re a Loser and Part of the Problem and Probably Fat” by Luke O’Neil.

I don’t usually enjoy people who write articles that intentionally want to poke and prod at others and then place their finger in their cultural scab wound. They want seem cooler and hip than you for enjoying something that most blue-blooded Americans enjoy.

That being said: Screw music festivals and screw your face of disgust when I tell you that I would rather eat a pack of glass lightbulbs than attend one.

Never have I had a moment of nostalgic lust wishing I had been at the original Woodstock. To me, it would have been horrible. Cochella would be worse and it is in LA.

This quote speaks to me.

by nickdivers
Lindsaycdavison

interesting...i thought the same thing. someone updated their profile pic in the midst of the boston posts on FB and I was like WTF, how could you do that at time like this?? but it's true, it's life.

I observed something today that I found interesting.

While reports poured in from Boston, there were a lot of people who started complaining about brands who were posting anything online that wasn’t related to the bombings. First of all, the idea that anyone should spend more than a single keystroke addressing social media hires mid-crisis is an interesting one. But really, what’s the ideal? That brands stop posting anything at all during a scary news story? Really, I asked myself this. I asked myself this because I was refreshing my tumblr dashboard looking for updates about the story and becoming frustrated with the non-Boston posts that were still being published.

It was then that I realized that the horror of the Boston stories today were actually made more horrific by being juxtaposed to the normal, everyday shit. Too often, I think, we get caught up in trying to make the internet be a completely tailored experience. We unfollow people who we disagree with on the whole, we tend to gravitate towards people who share our opinions and fall into similar mood patterns, and in the case of today, we get mad at people who don’t turn off their queued posts during a tragedy. But just as the former keeps us from experiencing the internet in ways that makes us come to better understanding of the world as it exists outside of our head, wanting a dashboard full of Boston posts today would have bypassed what could be considered the hardest part of dealing with a day like today. It’s the thought that tragedies like this happen within a world full of normal things like people telling jokes to each other, sharing recipes, or eating McDonalds. In trying to lock down our internet into “crisis-mode,” we binge on news, grisly images, we start reblogging police directives from thousands of miles away, or listing places to donate blood. These are all good things! I mean, they are good to a point. One could argue that the news did just an OK job at reporting facts today, one could express dismay that grisly images were posted unexpectedly for no reason other than the (extremely lazy, unwise, and ridiculously self-righteous) reason that it’s for journalistic integrity, one could argue that it’s probably not smart to blind-reblog police directives that may be outdated (or completely false).

But don’t you see? We are still mostly helpless. Why? It’s because the world isn’t tailored for this kind of hurt. Though we can try to curate a news feed that perfectly reports on this news free of distraction, we cannot get past the reality that tragedies happen unexpectedly amongst the best and most innocuous things that life offers. So how do we cope with the crazy thought that one day a bomb of some kind might go off in our life? What will happen then? Certainly something deeper than just a day full of interesting and moving news stories. So how do we prepare for that?

Well, I have my way. And I’m sure you have yours. I just know that it doesn’t start with telling anyone how they should or shouldn’t be on a day like today. That’s probably the first step.

So welcome to this house that makes us travel back in time. A Decor by Jonathan Adler that takes us back to the 60-70's with colors, lot of ceramics particular on the walls, furniture and objects in retro style. These photos are great and it's not surprising when you know that they were taken by Richard Powers which I already mentioned a few weeks ago here. For my part, I love the quirky and bold style of this interior although I do not think I could live there all the time but it would be perfect for a holiday or a weekend.

Vancouver Hotel Guests Explore the City in Style with Easy-to-Ride, Chic Urban Bikes

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) March 19, 2013

City bike company Brooklyn Cruiser’s Driggs 3 and Willow 3 models will be available to guests at The Burrard in Vancouver beginning in April, the company announced today. Brooklyn Cruiser’s vintage-inspired bikes combine the function, comfort, and style of a classic European bike with the stable and smooth ride of a hybrid bike.

The Driggs 3 and Willow 3 models include the company’s signature double top tube, cream colored tires, preconditioned leather saddle and grips, and rear carrier racks. Bikes will be available to guests at no charge.

“We visited Vancouver several years ago and still regularly talk about what an amazing city it is,” said Brooklyn Cruiser President, Ryan Zagata. “We were thrilled when The Burrard expressed interest in offering our bikes to their guests and we cannot wait for Brooklyn Cruiser bikes to hit the streets of Vancouver,” he added.

“The Burrard is stoked to announce Brooklyn Cruiser as our new official hotel “ride.” Brooklyn Cruiser’s cool style combined with simple design make them the perfect fit for our guests to check out the city by bike,” said Dani Pretto, General Manager of The Burrard. “Our complimentary bike program for hotel guests has always been much appreciated, but I think the easy-to-ride style of Brooklyn Cruiser bikes will make the experience simply unforgettable.
