LED Lights Are Ruining Laundry Detergent's White-Brightening Trick

by Robert Sorokanich

LED Lights Are Ruining Laundry Detergent's White-Brightening Trick

LED lighting is great. The right bulb gives the same warm incandescent glow you love from a fraction of the energy. But there's a downside: while LEDs make cities look awesome , the most common type of LED lighting dims the ultraviolet trick laundry detergents use to make white clothes look whiter. The future is bright, but it's also kind of dingy.

I'm ashamed a Texas team didn't come up with this first

Sales of the $25 corn dog are so brisk for the Arizona Diamondbacks that the team's concessionaires can't wait for a week-long road trip that starts Friday so that they can make enough to be ready for the team's April 11 homestand against Los Angeles.

Google Maps Stays Neutral By Only Showing Your Side in Border Disputes

Border disputes are still going on in a bunch of places around the world. That makes life difficult for mapmakers, and especially difficult for the world's favorite online map service, Google Maps. As The Washington Post points out, Google strives to not get stuck in the middle of a territorial struggle, by showing you the border you most likely want to see based on where you're Googling from.

Report: Texas is the nation’s most valuable college football team at $139 million (Dr. Saturday)

Forbes released its annual list of the most valuable college football teams Wednesday and for the fifth straight year, the newly coachless Texas Longhorns are worth more than any team in the country. The Longhorns are worth a whopping $139 million, “almost 20% more than any other team in the country,” the report says. The Longhorns are the only college football team to pass $100 million in revenue, a feat they have accomplished the last two seasons. The team’s value is “built on the back of the nation’s most dedicated fan base, which has helped Texas lead all schools in merchandise sales and secure the most lucrative school-specific TV deal,” the report says. In a year where no team made more than $90 million, the Longhorns brought in an income of $109 million. The revenue came mainly from ticket sales ($34.5 million), while also collecting “$30 million from contributors and another $15 million from Big 12 and NCAA distributions.” College football’s second most valuable team is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at $117 million after hosting an additional home game at Soldier Field and netting a $6.2 million payout from last year’s BCS National Championship appearance. After winning a third National Championship in four years, Alabama jumped from sixth to third this year with a $110 million value. Forbes considers “each team’s value to its athletic department, its university’s academic endeavors, its conference and its school’s local economy” while also consulting team revenues and expenses as reported to the Department of Education in order to determine the value of these teams. The rest of the list (with the team's value) is as follows: 4. LSU Tigers : $105 million 5. Michigan Wolverines: $104 million 6. Florida Gators : $94 million 7. Oklahoma Sooners : $92 million 8. Georgia Bulldogs : $91 million 9. Ohio State Buckeyes : $83 million 10. Nebraska Cornhuskers : $80 million 11. Auburn Tigers : $77 million 12. Arkansas Razorbacks : $74 million 13. USC Trojans : $73 million 14. Texas A&M Aggies : $72 million 15. Penn State Nittany Lions : $71 million 16. Wisconsin Badgers : $70 million 17. Washington Huskies : $66 million 18. South Carolina Gamecocks : $65 million 19. Oregon Ducks : $64 million 20. Tennessee Volunteers : $63 million - - - Want to join the conversation? Steve Spurrier says he didn’t know that Jadeveon Clowney’s car could go that fast (Dr. Saturday)

ryan.curtis

The old ball coach never quits

Steve Spurrier was in rare form on Thursday. The always quotable South Carolina coach commented on his star defensive end's speeding ticket on Saturday and was able to get a shot in at an old rival, Florida State. Spurrier to Bianchi: "I didn't know Jadeveon's car that could go that fast. He doesn't have a pretty car like those FSU guys used to drive." — Heath Cline (@heathradio) December 12, 2013 Clowney was ticketed for going 110 MPH in a 70 MPH zone on Saturday night. He was driving a Chrysler 300. But it wasn't just Florida State who Spurrier got to dig. His old employer and alma mater Florida was the subject of one too. Spurrier's Gamecocks are playing Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando on Jan. 1. Florida, after a 4-8 season, is not heading to a bowl game. "Somebody told me the Gators were going to be home, so hopefully we can get some of them to come down here." pic.twitter.com/NjAvWFaSyG — Heath Cline (@heathradio) December 12, 2013 Earlier this season, Spurrier got a great poke in at Tennessee and one at Arkansas and one of his coaches' shows was pulled because he said he was unhappy with what he said. Bless you, Spurrier. Your trolling is still fantastic. - - - - - - - Nick Bromberg is the assistant editor of Dr. Saturday on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip?
