After Long Battle to Form High School Atheist Group, Student Bows Out After ‘Numerous Threats’ and ‘Verbal Attacks’
LrbeverMakes me want to puke.
Over the last month, I wrote a few posts about how administrators at Pisgah High School in Canton, North Carolina were refusing to allow the formation of an atheist club run by 15-year-old Kalei Wilson (pronounced KAY-lee). They caved in days later, presumably from all the bad publicity:
It took letters from both the Secular Student Alliance and the Freedom From Religion Foundation (along with the ACLU of North Carolina) to convince school officials to change their minds.
The last time I spoke to Kalei, she told me she would be meeting with her principal to discuss the process of forming the group. Nearly a dozen students had expressed interest in joining the club and a couple of faculty members told her they would be glad to sponsor it.
But that all came to a halt yesterday.
Kalei had started a fundraiser for her group online, already raising a remarkable $500… but an update to her fundraising page now says the money will be returned to donors as Kalei will no longer continue with the organization:
It saddens us to report that due to the numerous threats and the verbal attacks on Kalei along with the vindictive which-hunt to hurt the reputations of affiliated local groups and our own family , Kalei will not be continuing with the group.
We have contacted GoFundMe and requested they return your generous donations. They have assured us that your funds will show back up in your respective accounts within 3 to 5 days.
Your love and support are priceless and we apologize in letting you down. It was our single goal to support Kalei in her efforts to start the much needed SSA club.
However, we never expected our family and friends to be sought out and demonized. Please know that we recognize the importance of the club but we can not justify our involvement with the risk of our families safety and well being.
I attempted to get in touch with Kalei last night to get more details but haven’t heard back yet. Of course, no one thinks any less of her for choosing this path; her safety is far more important than the formation of an atheist group and she’s shown plenty of courage throughout this ordeal. But if there are threats, I hope they’ve been reported to both school officials and local police. No one — atheists, Christians, anyone — should have to deal with this sort of retaliation from other people because of who they are or what they believe.
The Blob movie is based on real events involving a glittering, glowing, humming, purple glob!
LrbeverBlobrly?
In 1958, the horror movie "The Blob" was released. The soon-to-be-iconic film starred Steve McQueen and an extraterrestrial glob of matter. It wasn't exactly Oscar-worthy, but it did scare audiences.
Few audience members knew that the film was actually based on real-life events though. In 1950, The Philadelphia Inquirerran a story about four Philadelphia police officers and their encounter with a mysterious glob.
On the night of September 26, 1950, two cops were doing their rounds when they noticed a glittering mass drifting down a side street. They approached it and found a purple glob of unknown substance about 6 feet in diameter.
Disturbingly, the glob seemed to vibrate and move of it's own accord. Not knowing what to make of it, they radioed for backup. Two more officers arrived and witnessed the purple blob. They decided to try and pick it up, but when they attempted to lift the mass, it simply evaporated in their hands.
Another reason to love cats: the sound frequency of a cat's purr can increase bone density and promote healing
LrbeverThere you go.
Cats have adapted to conserve energy via long periods of rest and sleep. Purring is a low energy mechanism that stimulates muscles and bones without wasting a lot of energy.
As a result, cats do not display as many muscle and bone abnormalities as the domestic dog. It could be that a cat's purring helps alleviate the dysplasia or osteoporotic conditions that are common in dogs.
Cats purr when inhaling and also when exhaling, with a consistent pattern and frequency between 25 and 150 Hertz. Various investigations have shown that sound frequencies in this range can improve bone density and speed up healing.
This link between the sound frequency of a cat's purr and the accelerated healing of bones and muscles could prove helpful for some humans. Bone density loss and muscle atrophy are a serious concern for astronauts during extended periods at zero gravity.
Cats do not only purr when they are happy. Although cats purr when nursing their kittens, or when being petted by their human, they also do so when recovering from an injury. It is therefore more plausible that cat purring is not only a means of communication, but also a potential source of self-healing.

No one thought Lion King would be a success—not even the writers!
LrbeverCrazy people.
The 1994 animated film The Lion King was a hugely successful endeavour by Disney Animation Studios, but there was a time during its development when the producers and writers were not sure about its potential.
Work started on the movie in 1988 and all of the animation was done by hand, except for a handful of scenes. These were the days before computer aided animation and CGI.
The film was under development at the same time as Pocahontas, and many of the Disney animators chose to work on the latter movie, believing it would be more prestigious. This left Lion King with some animators who were doing their first major work.
Even the script writers were not entirely convinced, with one commenting that she was not sure who would want to watch this particular movie. It turned out the doom and gloom was entirely unfounded.
The Lion King opened in 1994 and raked in close on $1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The film was the second highest grossing film of the time, being beaten only by Jurassic Park.
Not bad for a film made by a few first timers and that no one had faith in.
I'm not usually a fan of those posts encouraging people to recycle old household stuff into new furniture etc. This one is different...in a good way.

LrbeverThat's pretty spot on, especially for a printer.
Mario Seinfeld - A Parody About Nothing
LrbeverKind of eerie how well the animators were able to make it work as it does.
This is pretty much a typical episode.
