Robert M. Baker coscripted the 1916 film "Flirting with Fate" (five reels)with director Christy Cabanne for the Fine Arts Film Company. The periodical Motography during 1916 may have found an early, if not extreme, example of the character centered narrative. "It is all Douglas Fairbanks, but when one considers that he's an actor possessing so much color and dash it is readily understandable that this is nothing against "Flirting with Fate", far from that; it is something in its favor." The periodical The Moving Picture World during 1916 noted,"Superior in many respects to any vehicle Fairbanks has had, 'Flirting with Fate' introduces a comical element of fear which would have enabled the story to stand on its own merits in open competition, whether interpreted by Mr. Fairbanks or not....This greater story breadth is of high value in sustaining interest."

Victor Fleming, who appeared onscreen in the film as himself, directed Douglas Fairbanks with actress Kathleen Clifford in the film ""When the Clouds Roll BY" (six reels) during 1919 from a photoplay written by Thomas J Geraghty. Fleming had began as a cinematographer for director Alan Dwan. Victor Flemming the following year directed Douglas Fairbanks in the film "The Mollycoddle".
During 1919 Douglas Fairbanks starred with Marjorie Daw in the five reel film "Knickerbocker Buckaroo", which he wrote under the pseudonym Elton Thomas (Elton Banks). Directed by Albert Parker the film is presumed lost, with no existing surviving copies.

In regard to "Lost Films, Found Magazines" a theme in the historiography of my archive on the internet:like the subtitle of a thesis- although the film "A Knickerbocker Buckaroo" does not exist, there being no surviving copies at present, the Exhibitor's Press Book does, providing extratextural discourse to the film within the context of the silent era and at a specific point in Douglas Fairbank's career.

Exhibitor's Trade Review claimed, "You can make good on Big Promises with this 'Knickerbocker Buckaroo'", the publication urging the four column newspaper ad and 24 sheet be used in "A Chance to Cash in on Ad Exploitation".

Paul Sloane directed actress Leatrice Joy in the 1926 silent film "Made for Love" (seven reels), the screenplay having been penned by Garret Fort. The periodical Motion Picture News printed its advice for Exploitation Angles to promote the film while screening its first run: "Refer to daily paper stories regarding excavations and discoveries in Egypt, mention King Tut. Stress the colorful epidsode in which tale of long dead lovers is told."
That year Paul Sloane directed actress Leatrice Joy in a second film for producer Cecil B. DeMille titled "Eve's Leaves" (seven reels) Silent Film

Scott Lord Silent Film: Blanche Sweet in Anna Christie (John Griffith Wray, 1923)

by noreply@blogger.com (Scott Lord on Silent Film, Scott Lord on Swedish Film, Scott Lord on Mystery Film)
Actresses Blanche Sweet and Eugenie Besserer starred in the 1923 version of "Anna Christie", adapted for the screen by Bradley King and directed by John Griffith Gray under the supervision of Thomas Ince. The periodical "Screen Opinions" of 1923 noted the photography of Henry Sharp as being "very good", the type of picture as being "sensational" with a "moral standard" of "average". The periodical Pictures and the Picturegoer reviewed the photoplay as an adaptation, "it is a notable tribute to the power of the screen freed from the limitations that inevitably beset the speaking stage....the story is familiar from the stage play with its stark yet fascinating realism and its true to life portrayal of elemental human passions." The periodical Picture Play Magazine hailed actress Blanche Sweet in the title role, "Most of the interest centers about Blanche Sweet who gives the finest performance of her career as Anna. Miss Sweet has always seemed to me an inspired actress."

During 1923 actress Blanche Sweet also appeared in the film "In the Palace of the King" directed by Emmett J. Flynn and written by June Mathis. The film is presumed to be lost, with no surviving copies existing. During 1924, actress Blanche Sweet appeared under the direction of Lambert Hillyer for Thomas Ince Productions, Incorporated in the eight reel film "Those Who Dance". The film is presumed lost, with no surviving copies existing. Lambert Hillyer cowrote the photoplay with Arthur Statter.

Directed by Sidney Franklin for First National Pictures, the 1925 seven reel film "Her Sister From Paris" paired Ronald Colman with actress Constance Talmadge. The periodical Moving Picture World reviewed the film with the emerging genres of the period in mind, "This is listed as comedy-drama but may more properly be called farce comedy, since great liberties are taken with mentalities of principal characters and the situations."
During 1925, Sidney Franklin also directed actress Constance Talmadge in the film "Learning to Love", scripted by Anita Loos and John Emerson. Only an incomplete copy if the film is presumed to exist.

Author Paul Rotha, in his volume The Film Till Now, seems to have begun a retrospective on the work of film director Dimitri Buchowetski, "Of other European directors who have had their fling in Hollywood, Dimitri Buchowetski has not been successful." He apparently lacks the need to include Buchowetski having been taken of the set of the Greta Garbo film "Love", much like Mauritz Stiller had been taken of the set of the Greta Garbo film "The Temptress", and continues to asses other unsuccesul directors by merely listing them. The review of "The Swan" (six reels) in the periodical "Film Daily" from 1925 predates Rotha, "Tinselled Production That Glitters With The Best Art Directors Can Give and the Best Buchowtski Direction" It noted the film's direction by Buchowetski as having been "excellant", claiming "his unusual skill is displayed throughout." Buchowetski wrote and directed the film. His cameraman was Alvynn Wycoff. Silent Film Victor Sjostrom The Grand Duchess and the Waiter

Literature of the English Country House — The University of Sheffield — FutureLearn:

'via Blog this'

I received a statement of accomplishment from The University of Copenhagen for an online course in Film (passed 87.9%)  and am waiting for a grade from The University of Edinburgh for an online line course in Art, which should also result in a statement of accomplishment (I should have enough already to pass).

In the meantime I enrolled in upcoming online courses from The University of Sheffield and the University of London in Literature and Photography, respectively.
