I Should Have Saved My New Console Money For Megatron Shoes

I Should Have Saved My New Console Money For Megatron Shoes

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson Jr. is my favorite football player. Okay, he's the only football player I can name, and that's only because people call him Megatron. Now I love him even more, because he's the inspiration behind a $550 box set of three pairs of sneakers and a limited-edition Transformer.

Apple's 'spaceship' campus earns final approval from its home city

by Rich McCormick

Apple has received final approval for its planned "spaceship" campus from the city of Cupertino. The city council gave its formal approval in a vote on Tuesday, after it had unanimously agreed to the construction of the 176-acre California campus in October. Construction will begin with the demolition of the Hewlett-Packard office buildings currently on site later this year.

By agreeing to build the so-called Campus 2, CNET reports Apple will enter into a 20-year-long development agreement with Cupertino, and will increase the amount of tax it pays to the city. Last year Cupertino's council refunded $6.2 million of the $12.7 million in sales tax Apple generated for the city; this year that rebate will be reduced from 50 percent of...

The Upper West Side Has The Dirtiest Air In NYC Earlier this week, we shared with you a map detailing the city's several hundred toxic sites, which are just everywhere. Blizzard expands Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls beta reach

by David Hinkle
Blizzard is preparing to initiate its beta testing phase for Diablo 3's upcoming expansion, Reaper of Souls. In the past, Blizzard has only invited friends and family members of its employees to play during these beta phases, but this time the developer is inviting "valued media contacts" and 3,000 of Diablo 3's most active players, who have opted-in for beta testing through Battle.net, across the world.

The beta isn't restricted by an NDA, so participants are free to post videos and articles about their experiences. This beta will include the full Reaper of Souls expansion, minus the final boss fight - so be mindful of spoilers when hunting down coverage.

Blizzard says the beta has only been sent out to a select few so far, but it'll move into full-on closed beta testing before year's end. If you want in, make sure you're signed up for beta testing on your Battle.net profile.

What to Eat at Gotham West Market, Now Serving Top-Notch Ramen, Killer Sandwiches, and More in Hell’s Kitchen

by Hugh Merwin

Welcome!

The staggeringly expansive Hell's Kitchen market has opened in the ground floor of the block-though building at 600 11th Avenue. It's got quite the lineup, too: AvroKO, for starters, is serving fish tacos, pulled-pork sandwiches, burgers, and more at its Americana-imbued Genuine Roadside. Meanwhile, Caroline Fidanza based her Little Chef menu of soups and salads on sandwiches she serves at Saltie in Williamsburg; the Cannibal and Resto owner Christian Pappanicholas is serving hot dogs with Chinese mustard and tripe chili, and Seamus Mullen has opened a tapas bar called El Colmado. In addition to its retail component, the Brooklyn Kitchen has a demo space where chefs and cookbook authors will teach classes and make public appearances; Court Street Grocers has a dedicated sandwich shop; Blue Bottle is now steeping New Orleans–style iced coffee; and meanwhile, noodle master Ivan Orkin has (finally) opened his first ramen-ya outside of Japan. Oh, and there's also a bike shop and showroom. Check it all out, straight ahead.

There's Ivan Orkin's anticipated Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop, for starters.

Twitter quietly removes feature that lets you receive direct messages from any follower

by Kwame Opam

Only a month after rolling out the feature, Twitter has quietly removed the ability for users to receive direct messages from any follower. For now, the person you want to DM will need to follow you back before you share any private thoughts.

Last month, Twitter added a simple checkbox in settings that allowed users to opt in for indiscriminate follower DMs. That's gone now. It's currently unclear how successful the feature was after its release and why the functionality is now shuttered — The Next Web reports that Twitter is currently directing journalists pressing for more information to an earlier blog post that expresses the company's willingness to experiment with its features. However, since the site has tried in recent...

Let Martha Stewart’s Terrible Food Porn Be a Lesson to Us All

by Alan Sytsma

We can only blame Martha for two of these nightmares.

Martha Stewart employs whole teams to photograph food. She has a small army at her disposal, ready to snap shots of pies and turkeys at a moment's notice. But as the world learned yesterday, when Stewart is left to her own devices, you get, well … this:

Iceberg wedge with homemade Russian dressing. Perfect salad for the onion soup lunch pic.twitter.com/KQatWUKUdl

— Martha Stewart (@MarthaStewart) November 17, 2013

And this:

Best slow cooked onion soup with baguette croutons and gruyere and Comte cheese melted on top. Garden onions pic.twitter.com/VNFkeiV3o3

— Martha Stewart (@MarthaStewart) November 17, 2013

Russian dressing and French onion soup are both notoriously difficult foods to photograph well: The dressing looks like spoiled Pepto-Bismol. The soup looks like bready excrement. But that only makes you wonder why Stewart would photograph those foods in the first place.

Here are four theories:
Martha Stewart does not have functioning eyeballs: Would it really be so difficult for a woman as wealthy and wily as Martha Stewart to simply fool the public into believing that she isn't legally blind?

She got a second opinion on the photos from one of her employees, who told her they looked fine: "Yes, Ms. Stewart, that lettuce shot looks delicious," said some poor assistant, fearing Martha's wrath if she told her that the glop of dressing actually looks like Krang from the Ninja Turtles.

She's got people to do her food-porn-ing and Tweeting for her: And those people are now looking for new jobs.

Martha Stewart is punishing us: We have done something bad, and now she is forcing the world to share these nausea-inducing images.

But I bet Martha fell victim to the same trap that ensnares many would-be food pornographers: She liked what she was eating, she took the pictures, she looked at them, and she thought, at least momentarily, Well those don't look so hot, but then she posted them anyway. And, because it's Martha, there was blowback. (Jezebel dug through Martha's archives to round up more awful food shots, comparing them to Terry Richardson's love of harsh lighting and dull subjects.)

Here is the lesson to be learned: If Martha Stewart can't make smartphone food porn look good, neither can we.

Most delicious food is brown. Fried chicken, bacon, steak, burgers, pastas, biscuits, cronuts: They're all just some shade of brown or beige. That's ugly. A scattering of chives isn't going to help your cause when dim restaurant lighting is involved.

Martha Stewart's brand is about aspiration. But if this is the food porn to which we should aspire, we're better off not even trying. By putting our iPhones away and sparing the world our amateur attempts to make half-eaten spaghetti look appetizing, we can actually all be better than Martha. That's a good thing.

China looks to license plates to solve air pollution

by Rich McCormick

During the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the city implemented a rationing policy that restricted road use to cars with specifically numbered license plates: one day, cars with an even number at the end of their plate were able to use the road; the next day, cars with an odd number were allowed to drive. Last weekend, the Chinese city of Baoding revived the measure in a trial attempt to reduce traffic and decrease pollution.

China Daily reports that use of Baoding's Second Ring Road on Friday between the hours of 7AM and 8PM was restricted to those of the city's 1.92 million cars with an even number at the end of their license plate. The following Saturday, the roads were only open to cars with an odd number at the end of their plate. Buses...

Sietsema: One-Offs: New York City's Most Unique Restaurants

by Robert Sietsema

oneoffsafropanamanian-1.jpg
[All photos by Robert Sietsema]
2013_white_gtruffle_fix13.jpgAs far as ethnic food goes, we like to think New York has at least one of everything in the world. Last time I counted, the city boasted around 140 distinct cuisines as represented by its restaurants, ranging from, say, the national cuisine of South Africa, to places that narrowly focus on a single region or even a single city in China. But sadly, there are cuisines we don't have, including Cambodian, Nicaraguan, the Etruscan lake-fish chowders and roasts of Tuscany and Umbria, Native-American cooking, North Korean, or the diet of ancient Rome, though we've had one place that took a stab at it in the past.

Other cuisines are in extremely short supply, causing devotees to spend hours on the subway seeking them out. Luckily, most are worth it. Here are the city's greatest "One-Offs": cuisines that are represented by only one restaurant. If you have info on examples we don't know about, please tell us in the comments.

oneoffsdanish.jpg
DANISH: There is only one Danish restaurant in town. Aamanns-Copenhagen, specializing not in the challenging, partly foraged food associated with Noma's René Redzepi, but in the simple open-faced sandwiches called smorrebrod. Made on homemade rye bread of exquisitely fine texture, these feature ingredients like pork pate, pickled fruits and vegetables, preserved fish, horseradish, chicken salad, and caper-studded beef tartare, with all sorts of architectural tweaks that make these tiny sandwiches a joy to look at. 13 Laight St,; 212-925-1313.

oneoffsliberian.jpg
LIBERIAN: As recounted in a recent Eater video, Maima Kamara is the Liberian-born executive chef of Maima's Liberian, and she whips up daily such sub-Saharan African delights as pepper shrimp, sweet-potato-leaf stew, and fufu. Her eponymous place is the only Liberian restaurant in the city, perhaps the only one in the entire country. There used to be one in Washington, DC, now shuttered. 106-47 Guy R Brewer Blvd; 718- 206-3538.

oneoffsslovakian.jpg
SLOVAKIAN: Uniquely representing for the earthy cooking of the Slovak Republic, sundered not too long ago from the Czech Republic as half of the former Czechoslovakia, tiny Korzo Haus on the southeastern edge of Tompkins Square is mainly a bar. But it offers a choice selection of eats, including beef brisket goulash, a toss of cheese and noodle-y fried dumplings called halusky, and, most amazingly, hamburgers embedded in langos bread dough and deep fried with condiments already applied. 178 E 7th St.; 212-780-0181.

oneoffslaotian.jpg
LAOTIAN: This cuisine took an awfully long time arriving in New York, and then did so in upscale bistro from, rather than as the small hole-in-the-wall you might have hoped to find in Elmhurst or Hell's Kitchen. Nevertheless, there are many great things on the menu at Khe-Yo, like the curry noodles shown, already bursting with flavor and additionally furnished with plenty of extra aromatics and crunchies on the side. 157 Duane St.; 212-587-1089.

oneoffstunisian.jpg
TUNISIAN: After the loss of the Upper West Side's late and lamented Epices du Traiteur, the only Tunisian spot is Nomad in the East Village, not to be confused with The NoMad. It offers agreeable takes on North African skewered meats and tajines, plus a few specifically Tunisian specialties such as the pastry called brik, here called a boureka. 78 2nd Ave.; 212-253-5410.

oneoffsicelandic.jpg
ICELANDIC: Hake with grilled cucumbers, heirloom carrots with burnt honey and purslane, duck confit with red seaweed, and boudin with Tokyo turnips and multiple mustards are only of the few adventuresome embroideries on traditional Icelandic cuisine via chef Ben Spiegel at Skal ("Bowl"), on a homely corner of Canal on the edge of Chinatown that I haven't tried yet. 37 Canal St.; 212-777-7518.

oneoffsguatemalan.jpg
GUATEMALAN: There are legions of Salvadoran and a handful of Honduran restaurants in town, but only one Guatemalan, despite the presence of many grocery stores so identified in Brooklyn and Queens. But Tierras Centro Americans (aka Xelaju) is the only place I know of that mounts a full-blown menu, including such delights as the cold pork-and-radish salad called salpicon (shown). 87-52 168th St.; Queens, 718-206-1457.

oneoffskoreanuzbeki.jpg
KOREAN-UZBEKI: When Koreans were banished from Japan after the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, they were resettled in Uzbekistan by the Russians and immediately started cooking. The result is a fascinating hybrid cuisine. Though two locations for Elza Fancy Food are listed, the one in Brighton Beach is the only full-blown, sit-down restaurant, while the one in Bensonhurst is a very small deli. Thrill to the taste of some familiar but revamped Korean dishes, many now featuring wads of dill, including the kuksu shown here. 3071 Brighton 4th St.; Brooklyn, 718-942-4088.

oneoffsafropanamanian-1.jpg
AFRO-PANAMANIAN: Serving a wild mash-up of West African, Caribbean, Latin, and Jamaican food, Kelso Dining has been in Crown Heights since 1969. The cuisine dates from a time when workers imported from West Africa and Jamaica worked on the Panama Canal in the early 20th century, and the menu runs the gamut from Spanish-leaning escovitches to jerk oxtail to empanadas to ojalda (a free-form African fritter) to (gasp!) spaghetti and meatballs. 648 Franklin Ave.; Brooklyn, 718-857-4137.

oneoffsserbian.jpg
SERBIAN: You might as well be in Belgrade at Kafana ("Café" in Slav), an East Village Serbian restaurant that reproduces the homestyle specialties of the Balkans, including a sopska (a cubed vegetable salad, gibanica (the Serb answer to mac-and-cheese), dimljena vesalica (smoked pork neck, shown),as well as cevapi (skinless, shot-gun shell sausages) made with a combo of lamb, beef, and a trace of pork. 116 Ave C; 212-353-8000.

Cronut Mania: Dominique Ansel Announces Cronut Preorder System

by Claire Nugent

cronutspreorderonline.jpgDominique Ansel has unleashed the official Cronut™ Preorder system of the Dominique Ansel Bakery on the world, making everyone's Monday a little sweeter. Could this be the end of the massive early-morning Cronut line? Probably not, but it does make the whole process a little more civilized. Now, in addition to the option of calling in a pre-order by phone at 11 a.m. on Monday mornings, Cronut seekers can submit orders online from the comfort of their warm homes and offices.

Of course, nothing is that easy when it comes to acquiring a Cronut. Even with the invention of this thoughtful system, there is still a wait period (at least a week). There is also still a limit on how many Cronuts a person can order at one time (six). And, once you have secured a Cronut pre-order, you still have to go to the store and be patient while the staff fetches your order. But all in all, the Cronut Preorder System will make the world a better, less hysterical place full of shorter lines and well rested people. The site is up and running as of today, but it is still in beta mode, so be prepared to run into a few snags as the kinks get worked out.

How to win at The Price is Right

by Jason Kottke

It turns out that for many of the games on The Price is Right, a simple application of game theory is all you need to greatly increase your chances of winning. You don't even need to know any of the prices.

In one instance, when Margie was the last contestant to bid, she guessed the retail price of an oven was $1,150. There had already been one bid for $1,200 and another for $1,050. She therefore could only win if the actual price was between $1,150 and $1,200. Since she was the last to bid, she could have guessed $1051, expanding her range by almost $100 (any price from $1051 to $1199 would have made her a winner), with no downside. What she really should have done, however, is bid $1,201. Game theory says that when you are last to bid, you should bid one dollar more than the highest bidder. You obviously won't win every time, but in the last 1,500 Contestants' Rows to have aired, had final bidders committed to this strategy, they would have won 54 percent of the time.

Google opens Winter Wonderlab pop-up shops showcasing latest gadgets

by Jacob Kastrenakes

Google is opening a series of pop-up shops for the holiday season to show off the Nexus 7, Chromecast, and the latest Chromebooks. The shops, called Winter Wonderlabs, are in and around six cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Sacramento, Washington, DC, and Paramus, NJ. While they're not quite as exciting as a mysterious barge, Google has turned its locations into sleek stores outfitted for the season — there's even a giant snow globe you can go inside that'll shoot slow motion video of you jumping around in CGI snowfall. The stores' exact locations can be found at Google's Wonderlab website.

Unfortunately, the Wonderlabs won't be showing off Google Glass, so it seems that those eager to try one out may have to wait until t...
