Trending: insider trading

by Jason Kottke

A new study finds that insider trading is much worse than commonly thought: a quarter of all public company deals may involve some kind of insider trading. From the NY Times:

The professors examined stock option movements -- when an investor buys an option to acquire a stock in the future at a set price -- as a way of determining whether unusual activity took place in the 30 days before a deal's announcement.

The results are persuasive and disturbing, suggesting that law enforcement is woefully behind -- or perhaps is so overwhelmed that it simply looks for the most egregious examples of insider trading, or for prominent targets who can attract headlines.

The professors are so confident in their findings of pervasive insider trading that they determined statistically that the odds of the trading "arising out of chance" were "about three in a trillion." (It's easier, in other words, to hit the lottery.)

Only about 5% of the deals are ever litigated by the SEC. (via mr)

Frito-Lay Terrorizes Nation With Multi-City ‘Doritos Loaded’ Mystery Tour

by Clint Rainey

It's nacho cheese.

At last sighting, the "warm Nacho Cheese snack" known as Doritos Loaded was being furtively tested in Beltway 7-Elevens. And just like the Air Force on Roswell, the snack wasn't something Frito-Lay was ready to "talk publicly about." Whether America is or not, the company is now apparently ready, and today embarked on a multi-city "Doritos Loaded" 7-Eleven sampling tour in, of course, a "Cruncheesy" food truck that's dispensing free Doritos Loaded in L.A. and Dallas. As suspected, a nationwide rollout is scheduled for July, and until that day, enthusiasts can monitor the melty Dorito-fied triangle thingies' every move at this appropriately hybridized site: doritos.7-eleven.com. Tracking The Insane Rents Along The L Line

by Rebecca Fishbein
Tracking The Insane Rents Along The L Line It's no secret that the L train is supercooltrendyhip now, what with the Urban Outfitters bars and JeffRidgeWickTownBergLyns springing up all over the place. And, as decreed by the ghosts of Peters Minuit and Stuyvesant, as the bespoke $15 cocktail joints move in, so do the evil GENTRIFICATION MONSTERS who gobble up obscenely priced apartments. Now, just to make sure everyone really knows how crazy it's gotten, a real estate blog has assessed the rent damage done in Brooklyn along the L line. Your computer isn't as safe as you think

by Cassandra Khaw

Over at Medium, Quinn Norton writes that computers and computing are fundamentally broken. Her article is a no-holds-barred discourse on software vulnerabilities, and how susceptible we really are to cyber attacks. She cites an example where an anonymous hacker infiltrated nearly half a million devices and accrued 10 terabytes of data, all without being detected. "If that malware had actually been malicious, we would have been so fucked," Norton writes. "The infrastructure of our lives is held together by the IT equivalent of baling wire."

Porsche Classic launching branded motor oil for air-cooled boxer engines

by Chris Bruce

Filed under: Classics, Performance, Etc., Porsche

Porsche Classic Motoroil

It's hard not to love the look of a classic Porsche. Whether it's the upside-down bathtub styling of the 356 or the gradual evolution of the 911, there is a little beauty in all of them. However, the older they get, the more that needs repaired to keep them on the road. Porsche Classic is helping out, though, by introducing its own brand of motor oil for the demands of the company's vintage, air-cooled engines.

Developed at the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, Germany, Porsche Classic Motoroil comes in two weights - 20W-50 for the 356, 914 and 911 models up to the 2.7-liter G-Model and 10W-60 for 3.0-liters-and-up engines through the 993-chassis 911. The company claims that the air-cooled engines have different heat demands than traditional, water-cooled units, and this oil is made to meet those requirements.

According to Porsche, modern, synthetic oils are sometimes too effective when it comes to old engines. They are fantastic at sopping up debris, but those deposits are often holding archaic seals together. Suddenly removing them can cause leaks. The new oil is specifically designed to work with the old-fashioned materials found in its classics. The company also knows that most owners aren't driving their vintage cars everyday. So this formulation is more alkaline that normal to neutralize acids that they build up and corrode components.

Both weights are available now to order from Porsche dealers. The 20W-50 costs $11.83 for a one-liter container and $51.27 for a five-liter bottle. The 10W-60 goes for $15.55 for a liter and $68.68 for five liters, according to company spokesperson Calvin Kim. Even if you don't have an air-cooled model, it might be worth buying a can for the cool design. Scroll down for the official announcement.

Google poised to release Apple CarPlay rival this month

by Brandon Turkus

Google

Apple and Google. They're the Michigan and Ohio State of the tech world. They're New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, Real Madrid and Barcelona, or whatever sports-based rivalry you want to cook up. Bottom line, if one company expands into a segment, it's only a matter of time before the other follows suit. And now, that rivalry is about to carry over to your car's dashboard.

Unnamed sources are reporting to Automotive News that Google will unveil its very own challenger to Apple's new CarPlay in-car operating system later this month at the Mountain View, CA company's annual developer conference. The system, allegedly called Google Auto Link, will be the first product to come from the Open Automotive Alliance, a partnership between Google, General Motors, Hyundai, Audi, Honda and hardware manufacturer NVIDIA.

The official announcement is expected to be made on either June 25 or 26, at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco. Expect to hear a lot more about Google Auto Link then.

Openings: The Dumbo Shake Shack Opens TODAY

by Marguerite Preston

dumboshakeshack.jpg
The long-awaited Dumbo Shake Shack opens at 11 a.m. today. The menu is the same as all the other locations, plus, as always, a couple location-specific concretes. One of those, named for the nearby Jane's Carousel, includes crushed sugar cones, sea salt, caramel sauce, and banana. The other one blends vanilla custard with a slice of pie from the beloved Four & Twenty Blackbirds (the pie flavor changes seasonally). No word yet on whether this spot will also get those new handcut fries, but it does have wine on tap.

While Danny Meyer's burger joint empire has been expanding at light speed across the world (and already has many Manhattan outposts), this is only Brooklyn's second Shake Shack, after the one in Downtown Brooklyn. But soon, very soon, a third should be opening near the Barclay's Center.

Democrats propose new bill that would make the FCC stop internet 'fast lanes'

by Adi Robertson

Two Democratic members of Congress are introducing a bill that would require the FCC to ban internet "fast lanes" under its new net neutrality rules. Brian Fung of The Washington Post reports that today, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA) plan to reveal the Online Competition and Consumer Choice Act, explicitly directing the FCC to stop ISPs from letting companies pay to get their content to customers faster. The agency is currently taking public comment on a draft of open internet policies, but it's raised the ire of net neutrality supporters by opening the door to "commercially reasonable" prioritization, which critics say would undermine the spirit of the rules.

This bill, as summarized by the Post, would...

It Only Takes This Electric Bus 15 Seconds To Charge At Every Stop

Because battery technology still relatively sucks, electric vehicles like buses that have to run all day long usually stay tethered to a spiderweb of overhead cables. But as an alternative to that costly infrastructure, researchers at the EPFL have developed an electric bus that can recharge itself at every stop in as little as 15 seconds.

T.G.I. Friday’s Banned Flair Because of Office Space

by Hugh Merwin

Mike Judge

Mike Judge's well-loved and very quotable 1999 movie, which starred Jennifer Aniston and Ron Livingston as workers trying to persevere amid the myriad absurdities of working life, may have inadvertently contributed to the demise of one of American dining culture's most eternally optimistic and chipper quirks: the various colorful and quirky buttons and pins known as "flair," thought to be modeled on actual things pinned onto the servers' uniforms at T.G.I. Friday's. ("We need to talk about your flair," Aniston's character is warned, in a famous scene. "Fifteen is the minimum, okay?")

While the restaurant group acknowledged in 2005 that its servers "didn't want to wear" the chain's iconic striped shirts, no one really explained what happened to all the mandatory flair. Until now: "About four years after Office Space came out, TGI Fridays got rid of all that (button) flair, because people would come in and make cracks about it," Judge tells Deadline. "One of my ADs asked once at the restaurant why their flair was missing and they said they removed it because of that movie Office Space. So, maybe I made the world a better place."

The pictographs that you see on your smartphone keyboard are about to get a big upgrade. Unicode, an industry standard that regulates the presentation of text across different software platforms, updated today to include 250 new emoji, the Unicode Consortium says. It will be up to the makers of Unicode member platforms like iOS and Android to implement the new standard and develop pictographs to represent the emoji, each of which Unicode describes only with a few tantalizing words. The new emoji will include Derelict House Building, Wind Blowing Face, Man in Business Suit Levitating, Spy or Sleuth, and the much-requested Notched Right Semicircle With Three Dots, among many others.

A people's center of the United States

by Jason Kottke

The center of the population of the United States has been moving steadily west and south since 1790. This video shows the progression until 2010:

You can step through the animation yourself on the US Census Bureau site. It's interesting to see how even the changes are...there was one big jump from 1850 to 1860 and a slow down in westward migration from 1890 to 1940, but other than that, it shifted west about 40-50 miles each decade.

Aston Martin to race with solar power

by Noah Joseph

Aston Martin Vantage GTE

Aston Martin may be more about luxury GTs than performance-obsessed supercars, but when it comes to racing, it's no holds barred. Aston Martin Racing has developed competition-spec versions of the Vantage and DB9, and even done a few LMP1 prototypes. But while some have been powered by V8s and others by V12s, the one underlying commonality is that they have all - in contrast with championship-winning diesel and hybrid prototypes - been powered exclusively by internal-combustion engines burning gasoline. That's what makes this announcement noteworthy.

At Le Mans last weekend, the factory team announced a partnership with the Hanergy Global Solar Power & Applications Group that will see solar panels installed on the roof of the Vantage GTE it fields in the World Endurance Championship. Only the thin panels won't be powering the wheels, boosting the engine somehow or powering the batteries for a hybrid assist. They'll be used to power the air conditioning system. Which may seem inconsequential, but when you consider that the AC typically saps power from the engine - and it can sap quite a lot on a hot race day - that could amount to a serious performance advantage while keeping the drivers comfortable.

While the system wasn't ready to use at Le Mans last weekend, temperatures at the French track don't get too high, so the air-con wouldn't likely be a big factor. The team (operated on Aston's behalf by Prodrive) does expect, however, to have the system up and running in time for next round at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, where it can get insufferably hot. Aston and Hanergy also hope to install the system on the V12 Vantage GT3 and V8 Vantage GT4 it supplies to customer teams, and install solar panels on the roof of the new facility Prodrive is building in Banbury, UK.

Jack in the Box Test-Markets Its Own Lousy Cronut Knockoff

We're actualy surprised this didn't happen a little bit earlier, to be honest.

The San Diego–based company is late, very late, to the Cronut-copycat scene, but it does win the prize for first drive-through fauxnut, which it's testing with the sort of lame name "Croissant Donut" a Reddit user spied on a promo sign at a local San Diego location. Listed for 89 cents each, or three for $1.99, they're cinnamon-and-sugar-dusted, perhaps a bit more bulbous than desired, and, if rolled out nationwide, may be the mass-produced "decent facsimile" that all but ensures the likes of Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts will follow suit. The Food Lab Turbo: These Pimento-Jalapeño Cheeseburgers Will Knock You Out

Pimento cheese, the caviar of the South, is an amazing topping for cheeseburger. [Photographs: J. Kenji Lopez-Alt]

Regular old cheeseburgers are all well and good (and really, if you're doing them right, there's nothing regular or old about them), but having recently been exposed to the glory that is a pimento cheese-topped burger at Jeff Mason's Burger Time in San Francisco, I just haven't been able to get the idea out of my mind.

There's something about the way the caviar of the South (as pimento cheese is affectionately known) melts into a rich, oozy coating, its acidity and punch of pimento flavor accenting a thick and juicy grilled burger in a way that regular cheese just can't. Add some pickled jalapeño peppers in there in place of standard pickles and you've got yourself one hell of a fiery backyard treat.

There's really not much to say about this recipe that isn't immediately obvious from the title and the photos. It's a grilled cheeseburger slathered with pimento cheese and served with sliced pickled jalapeños. Ok, there's a little bit more to it than that—with simple recipes, the beauty is always in the details—but it's still pretty darn easy.

20140421-pimento-cheeseburger-recipe-02.jpg

It starts with really good pimento cheese. The version I use here is based on Josh Bousel's simple recipe, which combines sharp cheddar with mayonnaise, chopped pimentos, and hot sauce. Depending on whom you ask, pimento cheese can vary from extremely chunky—Josh's recipe is straight-up grated cheese dressed with mayonnaise— to a mixture that's processed until nearly smooth.

I tried a few different degrees of chunkiness to top my burgers and found that the chunkiest mixtures didn't fare very well—the mayonnaise broke and dripped away, leaving you with a greasy sheen of half melted cheese. The best was a moderately chunky texture achieved by pulsing the ingredients in a food processor a few times.

20140421-pimento-cheeseburger-recipe-03.jpg

For the burgers, I like to grind my own meat, or at the very least, have a butcher grind meat fresh for me. You need a thick, juicy burger to stand up to the cheese, and a thick burger is at its tenderest and juiciest when it's ground fresh and packed just tightly enough to hold together on a hot grill.

The standard rules for grilling burgers apply here. Shape the patties with a slight indentation to prevent them from bulging as they cook. Only salt the patties on the exterior (to prevent them from getting tough or sausage-like). Cook them hot and cover the grill to prevent flare-ups, and use a thermometer to make sure you hit that target temperature.

20140421-pimento-cheeseburger-recipe-06.jpg

The one difference? A big ol' dollop of pimento cheese applied about a minute before the patties are done cooking.

20140421-pimento-cheeseburger-recipe-07.jpg

Once it's applied, cover the grill again to prevent flare-ups and to allow the cheese to melt over the burger patties.

20140421-pimento-cheeseburger-recipe-05.jpg

Like a good steak, your burgers should rest for a moment or two after cooking to prevent them from losing juices too rapidly when you bite into them.

That resting period is a good time to toast your buns and assemble your toppings. The order in which they go is not random! I pretty much always place my toppings underneath the patty—I suppose I should call them bottomings (not nearly as dirty as it sounds). This not only helps the burger stay together better as you eat it (toppings on top lead to a top bun that slips and slides around. This doesn't happen with the bottom bun), but it also creates a moisture barrier to prevent your bottom bun from getting overly soggy.

To bottom my burger, I layer on shredded iceberg lettuce (shreds are great for absorbing juices and creating a nice non-slip surface for the remaining toppings), slivered onions (I cut my onions from pole to pole for better flavor), a fat slice of tomato (so long as I can find a decent one—not always easy!), and a handful of those pickled jalapeños.

It all gets stacked onto a toasted Martin's Potato Roll, still the finest burger-delivery vehicle on the market.

20140421-pimento-cheeseburger-recipe-13.jpg

Now, open wide, squeeze down, and take a bite, if you dare. But get ready, because you are about to not-quite-literally get knocked on your ass with an explosion of flavor.

This is the kind of burger that makes you wish that some enterprising late night infomercial maven would invent a belt-mounted napkin-dispenser holster.

Expansions: The Halal Guys Will Become an International Chain

by Marguerite Preston

halalguys-chain.jpg
Beloved street meat vendor the Halal Guys has just signed a deal with Fransmart, the franchise consulting firm responsible for both Five Guys and Qdoba, to turn the Midtown food cart into a restaurant chain. According to the Times, Fransmart hopes to have Halal Guys outposts throughout the East Coast, Canada, Los Angeles, and the Middle East within a year. Within five years, it hopes to have 100 locations, including some in Europe. Fransmart's chief executive Dan Rowe believes it will become "the Chipotle of Middle Eastern food." Meanwhile, owners Mohamed Abouelenein, Ahmed Elsaka and Abdelbaset Elsayed also have not one but two un-franchised brick and mortar locations in the works in New York.

The Times reports that the first brick and mortar Halal Guys outpost, which has long been in the works in the East Village, is now just a month away from opening on 14th Street. Meanwhile, the team is also working on a second outpost near Columbia University, which should be open by the fall. Work on both of these started before the franchise deal was made, so they'll operate independently of Fransmart. There are also four Halal Guys carts around the city, alongside the original, which still regularly draws lines down the block on 53rd and Sixth Avenue.

While the interview with Letterman was a rather serious affair, mostly about how he "technically" never quit his Comedy Central show, Fallon was more interested in hearing some of his fun celebrity stories, including how he met The Roots (in Portland, Maine), how Prince used his photo for an album cover ("What am I gonna do?
