Inside NYC's Most Expensive Rental Apartment

by John Del Signore

Man, the real estate market in this town is cutthroat—apartment hunters have to immediately pounce on whatever comes available without thinking, and be first in line at every open house, checkbook in hand. This apartment on the top floor of the UES Pierre Hotel, for example, has already been snatched up by some shrewd investor who now has the distinction of living in the most expensive residential rental in NYC. The 39th floor apartment is going for $500,000 a month, and the tenant is, of course, "international." [ more › ]

Amazon's warehouse workers won't be paid for waiting in security lines

by Sean O'Kane

Amazon's warehouse workers won't be able to collect pay for the after-hours time they spend in security checks according to a unanimous decision handed down from the US Supreme Court today. The screenings, which companies like Amazon use to quell employee theft, can take up to 25 minutes according to the lawsuit originally filed in 2010.

Though Amazon is at the forefront of the decision, the original lawsuit was filed against Integrity Staffing Solutions, a company that provides staffing and warehouse space to the online retailer. The plaintiffs argued that failing to compensate employees for the mandatory checks violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), specifically referencing the requirement to remove things like belts and keys...

The skiing line of the year

by Jason Kottke

This is the craziest thing I've ever seen anyone do on skis: Cody Townsend skiing down a super steep face in a space between two rock walls no wider than a supermarket aisle. Powder Magazine called it "The Line of the Year".

They forgot to put "Batshit Crazy" before the word "Line". (via devour)

You can buy new murder animations in The Last of Us for $0.99 each

by Andrew Webster

The Last of Us is an incredible game, a dark and surprisingly touching story about life in a post-apocalyptic world, co-starring one of the best female video game characters in years. With the remastered version on PS4, the developers at Naughty Dog managed to make that world feel even more real, thanks to more detailed visuals and improved animations. And if there's one thing a personal, human story like that needs, it's more ways to kill — and now you can buy some for only $0.99 a piece.

As part of a new wave of downloadable content for the game's multiplayer mode, Naughty Dog is releasing typical add-ons like new weapons and clothing options for the game. But you can also buy new animations — which the studio describes as "very...

Dad, Can I Please Get Machine Gun Your Face 4 for Christmas? by Stephen Statler

Dad, can I please get Machine Gun Your Face 4 for the Xbox? Logan has it and Caden has it. It’s way less violent than Machine Gun Your Face 3. The blood is like purple, it’s not even realistic, and the things you kill are like aliens, they’re not even real people. And you can’t shoot bystanders, I know, because I played the demo at Evan’s. Evan actually has Bystander 3, where all you do is shoot bystanders, and I don’t even like that one. It’s too violent.

Plants vs. Zombies is boring! None of my friends play it because it’s so boring. And Machine Gun Your Face is not even rated “Mature,” it’s rated “Teen.” Logan isn’t even eight and his dad lets him play Kill Everything 2, which is way more bloody than Machine Gun Your Face and Kill Everything 1.

You don’t know anything about Machine Gun Your Face because you only saw the trailer. Noah’s dad plays Strafer 4 all day on his couch, and he lets Noah play Jugular Cutter 2, where all you do is slit the guy’s throat and the blood is real. Noah and I can’t even play when I’m there because his dad’s always playing. And he’s really good, he’s like the best in the country. He also lets Noah play Jugular Cutter 2 before he goes to bed. And Noah doesn’t even have bad dreams.

I don’t want to play basketball, it’s so boring! All you do is shoot and shoot and then Tyler just kicks the ball into the street, and you don’t even let me go get it. So it takes like an hour to play one game. And Mom makes me put on sunscreen when it’s like five in the afternoon, and Tyler’s mom brings out pears and stands there till we eat them all. Just get me Machine Gun Your Face 4 and I swear I won’t ask for anything else for Christmas. Except for Bleedout 6, which is way less violent than Bleedout 5. The blood isn’t even real.

Shake Shack’s Grand Central Location Now Serves Breakfast Sandwiches

by Hugh Merwin

We're totally onboard.

Danny Meyer's ever-expanding hamburger chain is now offering three breakfast sandwiches at its Grand Central Terminal location. They include:

• Sausage, Egg N’ Cheese
• Bacon, Egg N’ Cheese
• Egg N’ Cheese

The first two cost $4.75, and the meatless version is $3.75. The menu is available from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on weekdays only. The sausage is Niman Ranch, the bacon is applewood smoked, the bread is a potato roll, and the cheese is American. The chainlet now also has a selection of Fair Trade teas and is pouring a Stumptown "Shack" blend.

This is the first time Shake Shack has offered breakfast outside of its two locations at JFK airport, but we're pretty sure it won't be the last.

The NoMad Turned Its Famed Luxury Chicken Into a Burger

by Sierra Tishgart

It's part of a new prix fixe lunch deal.

Lunch at the NoMad has always mimicked the experience of dinner, offering à la carte dishes like butter-poached lobster, suckling pig, and the famed $82 whole-roasted chicken for two with foie gras and black truffles. But now Daniel Humm is giving the lunch service a total makeover. Beginning today, there will be a $29, two-course prix fixe menu offered on weekdays from noon to 2 p.m.

The choices include celery-root tortelloni, carrot tartare, and a suckling-pig sandwich with butternut-squash soup. Yet the brand-new chicken burger is what most caught Grub's attention. It's one pampered sandwich: There's black-truffle pâté mixed into the patty, and it's topped with truffle mayonnaise, Gruyère, and foie gras spread. Plus: The Brioche bun is made with lemon zest, Gruyère, and even more chopped black truffles. Would you expect any less from the chef who created one of the city's most impressive beef burgers?

Legendary SGV Spot Lunasia Bringing Dimsum House to Pasadena Later This Month

by Tony Chen

SGV dimsum elite Lunasia will open second branch on Colorado Blvd.

Since last summer, a banner that read "Dimsum House" hung loosely on the front edifice of the unit which housed Vol. 94, an ambitious Korean-New American fusion wine bar that operated for two years. No one paid much attention.

Last week, the universally praised Lunasia in Alhambra hung a new banner announcing the opening of "Dimsum House" at 239 E Colorado Blvd. Lunasia Alhambra staff verified Lunasia is behind Pasadena's Dimsum House, and the target opening date is sometime later in this month. A call to the Pasadena number registered to the business yielded no operator, but there is definitely remodeling activities at the Pasadena location.

Pasadena has been without serious Chinese dining option since the closure of Yujean Kang's in 2012. Panda Express did Chipotle-fy itself last July by opening a fanciful concept kitchen, but Pasadena will gain the strongest reason to not support the completion of Interstate 710 when Dimsum House opens. Why drive the torturous 5 miles through San Marino and South Pasadena to Alhambra when one of the best dimsum restaurants in LA is bringing fancy tobiko-topped shiu mai and translucent Chiu Chow dumplings directly to Old Town-adjacent?

There is no alcohol license currently planned for the 4000-square foot space, but it won't matter when the nice little old ladies of Pasadena sit down at Lunasia Dim Sum House for Christmas dinner.

YouTube in a 'fire drill' over risk of celebrity defections to Facebook

by Vlad Savov

Today, The Wall Street Journal relays information from insiders at Google who say "YouTube has been in a fire drill" trying to secure its most popular users and prevent them from fleeing to more generous rivals. That means bonuses for signing multiyear deals that secure YouTube limited-time exclusives on new content, or alternatively, bonuses tied to the traffic performance of videos.

Competing with YouTube is hard. It's the home of user-generated video on the web and has nurtured a number of hugely popular stars whose earnings now stretch into the millions of dollars each year. The value of those compelling personalities has grown even higher this year thanks to companies like Yahoo actively recruiting YouTube's stars for competing...

Facebook Search now lets you find specific posts, not just people

by Nathan Ingraham

It's been almost two years since Facebook launched Graph Search, an ambitious and all-encompassing tool that you could use to search through your connections based on their Facebook behaviors. Now, the company is introducing its next big update to its search product, and it's the kind of idea that's so simple on the surface it feels surprising that Facebook didn't have it already. Starting today, Facebook users can use keywords to search for specific individual posts, not just for other users and pages.

Now, when you start typing an entry into Facebook's search box, it'll offer you keyword suggestions for any name you might enter — Facebook's first example was someone typing the name "Jessica," with the autocomplete suggesting searches...

Amazon Elements: Amazon Unveils Its Own Diapers and Baby Wipes

by John Gruber

Jason Del Ray, reporting for Recode:

Called Amazon Elements, the line of diapers and baby wipes will only be available to customers who belong to the Amazon Prime membership program, adding another item to the growing list of membership perks. By working directly with a manufacturer, Amazon will be able to price the brand aggressively, with a 40-count package of diapers starting at $7.99. That works out to about 19 cents a diaper, compared to competitor prices that mostly range from 24 cents to 34 cents.

As a result, some people will view the launch as a shot across the bow at the big diaper brands, Huggies and Pampers, that sell their products on Amazon. Sellers on Amazon already gripe that Amazon sells the same products as they do. Now it is building a direct relationship with a supplier that allows it to undercut some of its own partners in a more significant way.

“Some people”? Who doesn’t think this is a “shot across the bow at the big diaper brands”?

This is what the new Uncharted looks like on the PlayStation 4

by Ross Miller

Today at Sony's first-ever PlayStation Experience event, the company showed off the first real-time gameplay footage of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End — originally announced in November 2013 and due out sometime next year.

So far, the game itself looks strikingly familiar in style to past incarnations — our Indiana Jones-esque protagonist Nathan Drake is seen climbing around lush environments while delivering exasperated one-liners to no one in particular. Eventually he finds himself in the company of more nefarious looters and takes to sneaking, punching, and shooting.

What's new here is graphic fidelity, and the footage we're seeing is rich in texture — from the rustle of foliage to the dust-up of stray bullets hitting rock. (It's worth...
