When 100 people try to imitate Chewbacca

Haha. I enjoyed this.

What happens when you ask 100 people to imitate Chewbacca? For this video, CUT asked 100 people to show us their best impression of Chewbacca, the iconic sidekick of Han Solo in the Star Wars saga. The result is simply hilarious…

Statement from the Organizers of the AUDL Boycott

by Organizers of the AUDL Boycott
Emily McDaniel

Interesting.

The Statement

“I believe that women and men should have equal representation at the highest, most visible levels of our sport – including professional play. If the AUDL does not ensure that women and men have equal representation in 2018, I will not support it. This means I will not be playing in or attending games, and will avoid consuming related media and content.”

Who We Are and Why We’re Writing:

Today we released a list of names of players committing to the above statement and action. This effort was organized by Claire Chastain, Trent Dillon, Elliott Erickson, Hannah Leathers, Mario O’Brien, Markham Shofner, Jesse Shofner, and Nicky Spiva.

We write to you to provide our own perspective on what the boycott statement means to us, why we view it as necessary, and what we hope to accomplish. We also provide some information on some ways that you can support change, as well as our recommended next steps.

Though we are united in the above statement and action with those who signed onto the boycott, the below statement is ours alone and does not necessarily reflect the beliefs or positions of the individuals who signed on to the boycott statement.

What does “equal representation” mean to the organizers?

In our internal discussions, we had different impressions of exactly what equal representation meant; however, we did agree that equal representation cannot occur without equal visibility and equal opportunities for women. Visibility and opportunity are not easily captured by any single metric, but some insufficient, yet useful proxies are the amount of filmed games/content of men/women and the number of men/women players able to compete in a full season for free (or with some compensation).

This is a difficult question and one that should be asked and discussed at length and in an ongoing way. We find the conversations best when discussed in a diverse group, and we especially encourage men to engage with, listen to, and amplify women’s voices in these conversations, while also not leaning on women to do all the work.

Why didn’t the boycott statement include a detailed implementation plan for the AUDL?

The above statement is about values and commitment, and intentionally does not address details of implementation – for example, whether AUDL should go mixed or start a women’s league. We believe that those implementation decisions are absolutely critical, and that there are multiple ways to achieve or fail to achieve equal representation. We also believe that those implementation discussions come after the decision by the league to ensure equal representation for women and men. At this point in the conversation, those details often serve as a distraction intended to derail change. League leadership has not and currently does not ensure visibility and opportunity for women commensurate with what they finance for men. Until that changes, or league leaders view a league with equal representation as a better business deal, talking implementation feels somewhat hollow.

Our Goal

We aim to encourage the AUDL to ensure equal gender representation, visibility, and opportunity in their league. We also aim to spark conversations and discussions about gender equity, what equal representation would look like, and what responsibility we and others have when contributing resources, time, and energy to grow the sport in accordance with our values. We hope that this collective action will contribute to the past and future work fighting for gender equity in our sport.

Next Steps for the Ultimate Community

We encourage members of the ultimate community to join our community petition, in which you can demonstrate your support for equal representation of women in the AUDL. This will help communicate to the AUDL both the support they have in shifting to a structure that creates equal representation for women, and the lack of support they have for continuing on an inequitable path – check it out.

Also, talk about this stuff! Engage with your communities. Change will not happen without dialogue.

Response to the AUDL’s Recently Proposed Plan to Address Gender Inequity

Though the AUDL’s plan would be an improvement over years past, it still is incredibly inequitable, especially when considering the visibility, playing opportunity, and representation of elite men’s players financed by the league compared to that of women. We believe this continues and perpetuates gender inequity in our sport, even if it is better than where it was last year. Also, we do not know the details of the AUDL’s tentative TV deal – until that and additional information is shared, it is hard to evaluate the league’s commitment to addressing gender inequity.

We believe:

  • True gender equity cannot occur without equal gender representation, visibility, and opportunities.
  • By committing to gender equity, our sport will find a new path towards growth that does not inherently favor male athletes.
  • Visibility and growth should not come at the expense of equity and our values.
  • Franchise owners and league leadership can make this change.

Next Steps for the AUDL

We encourage AUDL leadership to adopt and implement a policy ensuring equal representation, visibility, and opportunity for women in the league. We encourage the AUDL to develop this policy in consultation with the ultimate community, especially women, and existing groups working in support of gender equity such as the Gender Equity Action Group, Upwind Ultimate, and others.

Sincerely,

Organizers of the AUDL Boycott

Pringles launches a Thanksgiving meal made of chips and artificial flavors

by ufunk
Emily McDaniel

I'd try it.

For Thanksgiving, the American brand Pringles launches a weird meal tray, composed only of chips and artificial flavors. Far away from good old home cooking, this menu includes all the dishes of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, reproduced in the form of Pringles chips with artificial flavors: turkey, peas, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes or mac and cheese.

Entitled Pringles Thanksgiving Dinner, this meal tray will be available in limited edition, and only in the United States of course. When junk food is trying to replace family dinners…

Emily McDaniel

Excited for this one.

From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light.

Why Pro Ultimate Should be Mixed

by Carl Morgenstern
Emily McDaniel

I'm in.

Earlier this summer, I was struck by a Martin Luther King Jr. quote that Markham Shofner posted on twitter. To summarize the message: If you want to see change, you cannot wait for a better time; change only happens when you make it happen.

It is time for men’s players to speak up. The gender imbalance in sports in our society is a much bigger issue than just ultimate.

Playing sports—especially ultimate—has greatly enhanced my life. Ultimate gives me a sense of pride and purpose; I’m able to express passion and release stress on an almost daily basis. I would argue that I am a much healthier, happier, and more confident person because of sports. Ideally, these benefits should be available to everyone. However, as a male, I was given a leg up in sports: not only did I have every opportunity to play sports as a kid, I had publicly revered male idols to look up to.

In my second year of little league, I was on the “Red Sox”, had long messy hair, and played center field. Johnny Damon had long, slightly less messy hair, played center field, and was a rising star on the real Red Sox, so he became my idol. Johnny Damon’s Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years (breaking Babe Ruth’s curse) the same year my team won our little league championship. I was an undersized, underdog kid, but if my hero could accomplish the impossible, so could I.

Damon’s success gave me the hope that I could play pro sports someday. So I worked hard to be the best athlete I could be, and in a fortunate turn of events I was led to play ultimate my senior year of high school. Now, as a member of the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds and the USA U24 Open team, I have proven to myself that I can accomplish my goals. Though my teams are not quite as popular as the Red Sox, I believe I can inspire kids, and as a “pro” athlete I’m occasionally afforded the opportunity to do so.

Following a Thunderbirds home game, the announcer named me the “Player of the Game”. My mom — who had been excitedly dancing in the stands the entire game — approached me alongside a little girl, no older than five. She was wide-eyed and seemed starstruck. As cool as that moment was for her, I couldn’t help but imagine the impact a female role model would have had in my place.

A female player could have been to the girl what Damon had been to me. However, the lack of playing opportunities for women in the AUDL not only prevents this, but also supports the notion that the best athletes can only be men.

This is why pro ultimate needs to be mixed, now. We cannot wait for a male league to succeed before a mixed or women’s league is formed. (Almost) all the role models in the AUDL are male, strengthening the message that women are not as valued in sports as men. A mixed league, showcasing hundreds of elite female athletes competing on the same field as men, could begin to change this oppressive narrative.

I used to think that mixed gender play at the professional level would not be feasible, but I have changed my mind. The mixed version of the sport is played at an elite level across the country, has been on ESPN, and is played at the highest level because of the World Games. If you include pickup and seasonal leagues, the majority of ultimate is played mixed. On top of these reasons, pro teams would have twice the athletes to choose from during tryouts. If there were no pro single-gender leagues to compete with, just like the World Games, the talent across the board should rise.

The AUDL’s goal is to break into the mainstream sports fan base (mostly men), but ultimate is a niche sport, so maybe we should try to attract new sports fans: females. There are almost unlimited options for fans to consume sports, so why watch ultimate? A sport whose highest level includes men and women on the same field might be more likely to create a fan or recruit out of women/girls who would not normally watch sports.

Though I cannot force the AUDL to transition to a mixed league, I would still like to support women’s ultimate. I will be donating my past season’s Thunderbirds salary to support women’s U24 athletes in their travels to Perth, and I ask that other AUDL athletes do the same to support women in their community. It is not right that men can play for pay when women do not even have the chance to play for free.

Ultimate is changing. Whatever happens in the next couple years could determine the future of our sport for decades. Let’s set our sport up to positively impact the world we live in, rather than strengthening prejudices. Maybe, eventually, more women will play ultimate than men. That should be the goal. That would be equity in ultimate.

Haha. This is not something I would excel at.

Would you be able to draw the logos of Starbucks, Apple, Burger King or Foot Locker ? Branded in Memory is an interesting experiment created by Signs.com, which asked 100 people to draw 10 famous logos, in order to analyze how well we are able to retain the details of these images that we meet almost daily. If few people are able to approach a perfect logo, we must recognize that these images are definitely engraved in our memory…

The Types of People You Meet At An Ultimate Pick Up Game

by Tommy Paley
Emily McDaniel

Who are you?

As I’ve written about here and here, I started playing ultimate in 1989.

After close to 30 years of experiences playing across Canada, the US and in many other countries in the world, the same type of people keep showing up at pick-up games again and again and again.

Here are the people you will meet at your next pick-up ultimate game.

You will meet the…

Masters Player

  • Wears a well-worn jersey from the early 90s and a salt-stained visor
  • Takes forever getting ready as he covers every joint with athletic tape, puts on his ankle, knee, and elbow braces and downs a handful of ibuprofen
  • Looks visibly hurt as he goes for the slowest warm up jog anyone has ever witnessed
  • Does 15-45 minutes of dynamics loudly groaning the whole time
  • Name drops players he played with and against in the “good old days” that no one under 35 has heard of
  • Constantly calls for everyone to dump the even when the disc is 20 yards upfield and he is lagging way behind the play
  • After getting scored on, will remind his team of his laundry-list of injuries he’s currently dealing with and how he would have definitely stopped that guy 10 years ago

“The Rules Police”

  • Initially comes off as relaxed and cool, but is actually one of the more intensely, condescending and passive-aggressive people there
  • Knows. Every. Single. Rule. Period.
  • Can quote the exact rule complete with page number and edition the rule first was added and carries at least one paper copy of the rules in his bag
  • Will state “No, that isn’t rule 10.5.1a, that’s rule 10.5.1b!” while shaking his head with frustration followed by muttering “idiot”
  • Impossible to discuss/debate/argue with as they are 100% right and have never been wrong about anything which partially explains their asking everyone if they need a guy for their league team

Young Couple in Love

  • Shows up late heavily alluding to last night’s bedtime escapades with slightly too much detail
  • Excessive and disgusting amount of hugging, kissing and touching during warm-up, while on the sideline, on the line awaiting the pull and during any stoppages in play
  • Loudly calling out “sweetie”, “honey”, “sweetheart” and other pet names almost to make everyone else feel worse about the current state of their own love life
  • Constantly looking to throw to each other regardless of how open the other is or how wide open anyone else is
  • Each point scored via the lovers connecting on a pass elicits a mandatory “awwwww” or else you risk coming across as bitter and unhappy

Dude Who Doesn’t Talk

  • This guy just doesn’t talk…to anyone…at all

“A Little too Amped up on D” Person

  • Will get at least one Callahan often on a beginner and will completely taco the disc in his aggressively intense celebration
  • Will bark at and mercilessly berate teammates who aren’t giving 110% the entire time
  • Consumes between 3-5 energy drinks during the game attempting to crush them against his head after drinking each one even when they are in plastic or glass bottles
  • In timeouts will use words such as “relentless”, “smothering” and “suffocating” causing everyone to be slightly concerned and afraid to not play better defense
  • Others will worry that he will incidentally break their hand in an exuberant on-field celebration
  • At least one person will say “chill dude” followed by “what are you on?” followed by “are you bleeding?”

Guy Looking to Score in Every Sense of the Term

  • From the moment he arrives, he will constantly flirt moving from female to female as if a bee looking to pollinate flowers
  • Will use as many risqué double-entendres, juvenile spoonerisms and sexual euphemisms as he can while maintaining his dual focus of playing ultimate and hooking up
  • Offers up-close-and-personal hands-on help for all women with their grips, how to pivot and how to use your hips and shoulders when throwing for distance
  • No endzone celebration is complete without his hugging each woman on his team for slightly longer and tighter than is socially acceptable

College All Star

  • Does wind sprints and core workout during warmup while all others are chatting
  • Literally does not stop running the entire time even when off the field
  • Breaks the mark with impossibly low, precise throws as if that is her sole mission
  • Scores literally every single point causing other team to change their entire defense to attempt to contain her, which they can’t
  • Will D most of the guys on the opposing team repeatedly until they wonder if they somehow offended her or start to cry for their mommies or both
  • Would come across as a robot if not so smiley and cute

Spirit “Cheerleader”

  • Plays with such an extreme level of unbridled enthusiasm that everyone keeps their distance and is slightly worried about her mental health
  • Wants to high five everyone on both teams after every point even going as far as gleefully chasing after someone who “isn’t in the mood”
  • Will call at least 3 spirit timeouts that include spirit games, sitting cross-legged in a circle and literally suggesting singing Kumbaya and a teary-eyed story about “where has all the spirit gone?”
  • Is “all about spirit”, something she will mention somewhere between 35-60 times during the game
  • After the game, she insists that the team perform a detailed, politically correct and overly-rehearsed song parody to the tune of American Pie, I Will Survive or Fight For Your Right (to Party)

“Cares too Much About Winning” Guy

  • Hyper-aware of the score the entire time
  • Glares for an uncomfortably long time at anyone who doesn’t seem like they totally care about winning
  • Talks about all of the results of previous pick-up games from weeks and years past swearing about “the utterly depressing” losses
  • Celebrates scoring or throwing for a point so much so that it is awkwardly embarrassing for all
  • Takes far too much credit if his team wins and doles out the blame on all of the newbies who “should have been looked off no matter how open they were” if his team loses

Guy who Wandered in off the Beach

  • Long, sun-bleached graying hair in a ponytail – will be wearing a bandana
  • Wears ripped jean cutoffs and tank top and may play barefoot
  • Weathered, bronze skin and appears that he may have slept at the field overnight
  • Smells “interesting”
  • Throws beach throws, has zero field awareness including where the endzone is and what defense means
  • Consumes somewhere between 3-6 cans of beer during the game and somehow his play will improve
  • Will launch into some long, rambling story loosely involving a Frisbee from the 70s that will have no point or conclusion

Tanned Muscles Guy

  • Shows up in the smallest tank top and short shorts so as to show off his impressive collection of well-oiled muscles causing at least one person to ask “are those real?”
  • Speaks monosyllabically and possibly with a hard-to-place accent when not flexing
  • Will find multiple, mostly nonsensical reasons throughout the game to remove his shirt displaying a six-pack that others will find both impressive and infuriating
  • Plays the entire game wearing sunglasses causing teammates to wonder “what is he looking at?”, “what is he thinking?” and “is he thinking?”

Lower Division League “Star”

  • Shows up in brand-new cleats and decked out in elite club team gear
  • When doing a team name circle, inserts a non-ironic “The” before his name before dusting off his shoulders
  • Exudes tons and tons of confidence complete with an annoying laugh and complicated high five routine
  • Loudly lets everyone know of his team’s incredible record this season conveniently never addressing the question of what division he actually plays in
  • After throw aways or being burned on D will come up with excuse after excuse as to why he “didn’t bring his A game”
  • At the end, when reality has finally set in, he will be the last to leave the field as he stares vacantly off into the distance as a single tear slowly rolls down his cheek

Uber-Athlete

  • This woman biked here straight from the gym where she just completed “only 90 minutes” of weights after she either did an early-morning 20 mile run and/or a triathlon “just for fun”
  • Drinks a water bottle full of what can only be described as brownish-greenish sludge
  • Complains that the points are too short and the time between points are too long and that if this keeps up she won’t get her 50000 daily steps in
  • Regardless of what anyone else mentions, she will trump any exercise story with her own athletic feat that no one will doubt the veracity of

Club Team Buddies

  • A gasp will escape the lips of others as these two “famous” players show up
  • Will only throw to each other regardless of how open anyone else is or how well covered either of them will be
  • Throws will be hucks or give and go passes where no one else on the team even comes close to touching the disc
  • Will only play on the same team even when splitting up would make the teams more fair
  • Won’t run at all when not involved in the play
  • Don’t play any defense at all and instead race back to the line for the next point so they never have to come off the field

“The Lower-level Older High School Coach”

  • Wears glasses, a whistle and knee-high socks
  • Shakes his head repeatedly at the “amateurish” offensive strategy being utilized by “kids these days”
  • Calls timeouts and, using his clipboard, insists on diagramming overly-detailed-completely-confusing plays involving no-fewer than 9 cuts
  • Constantly offers advice to everyone on their throws, their grip and their form for catching despite his inability to do any of these himself

Super-Fast Youth

  • Totally and completely unguardable
  • Barely breaks a sweat, breathes hard or looks like they are putting in a full effort as they ease around the field repeatedly getting open by huge amounts
  • Will make all defenders feel older, slower and depressed while maintaining a youthful joie de vivre and obliviousness
  • Doesn’t stretch, drink water, wear sunscreen or look up from their phone when not playing

Yoga Instructor/Student

  • Arrives wearing the newest and trendiest yoga wear
  • Drinking a non-fat, almond milk, kale smoothie or kombucha and eating a Greek yogurt, chia seed, acai berry bowl
  • Stretches before the game demonstrating unreal flexibility that makes all others either gape with jealousy, drool uncontrollably or both
  • Will demonstrate so many yoga poses while at the game while constantly dropping the name of her studio that others will rightfully wonder if she was here to play ultimate or just recruit new yoga students

Total Newbie

  • Has been dragged out by their friend/love interest, something they will repeat ad nauseum
  • Has never touched a disc before and is visibly scared when thrown to
  • Regardless of what positions are called, will pick the disc up on turnovers every time and promptly throw the disc away
  • Somehow throws the disc with zero spin regardless of any pointers anyone gives
  • Will spend much of the game standing in one spot often waving their arms in the air or slightly keeled over with hands on hips saying “I thought this only involved throwing to dogs”

Which one(s) are you? If I missed one, let me know.

Cool. I like being a part of this sport.

The Gender Equity Action Group, which coalesced last fall to pressure USA Ultimate to seek equitable coverage of the genders in their next media deal, announced a new project to encourage male players to be more vocal and engaged in discussing and supporting the movement for increased gender equity in the sport.

The “Step Up, Step Out” campaign, which launched Wednesday, promises a series of short selfie-style videos throughout the remainder of the 2017 club season showcasing male voices discussing their views on gender equity in the sport. The intro video — which features many of the most recognizable male players in the sport, including five members of this summer’s World Games roster and several others who represented the country at WUGC in 2016 — presents a montage of players calling for more action and accountability from their gender in actively participating in the movement, which has traditionally been led by women.

“It’s time for men to acknowledge their advantage and privilege in the ultimate community and use their position of power to work towards an equitable sport,” said Elliott Erickson, a spokesperson for the project.

The video promises to address the topic in a wide variety of contexts in the ultimate community, including how it relates to the AUDL, which the group cites in their press release as a key factor in further imbalancing gender equity in the sport.

The GEAG has stated that while the focus of the project on men is intentional, women have been and will continue to be involved in the project and future video installments.

Last September, the GEAG generated a statement calling for gender equity in media broadcasts that was signed by a vast majority of the top club players in the country. That earned them the opportunity to sit down with USAU leadership to discuss their demands, who then successfully lobbied ESPN. After building a coalition that achieved their aims at media equity, the GEAG now turns their focus more internally — at least for now.

The end goal of this project, as stated on partner site Upwind Ultimate is to “encourage males in our sport to share and understand perspectives, to model and encourage community conversation, and to inspire more action towards gender equity.” The group hopes the effort galvanizes the community and inspires others to produce additional resources that further the GEAG mission and values. The campaign has thusfar received generally positive feedback and support on social media channels.

Outside of encouraging men to join the conversation, the call to action and specific outcomes sought through the “Step Up, Step Out” campaign remain somewhat unclear. Organizers acknowledge that each individual involved “holds different opinions on how to advance gender equity in ultimate,” and that, “we as a community likely won’t be able to come up with the proper ‘solutions.'” The group doesn’t expect more concrete goals to emerge from this video series, but are seeking to expand the influence and support for the GEAG ahead of other potential actions in the future.

Not present so far are any male voices that disagree with the stated mission of the group.

“As for those who don’t support the GEAG mission, hopefully they will be open to having conversations through this project to better understand their position and what about the GEAG mission they don’t agree with,” said Erickson. “These conversations are for everyone, no matter how they feel and where on the spectrum of involvement they fall.”

The next video in the series is expected within the next week, though the group has yet to disclose what the first topic of discussion will be.

Will Smith Just Shared The First Cast Photo Of "Aladdin" And I'm Not Crying, You're Crying

Shining, shimmering, splendid.

So unless you've been trapped in a lamp for 10,000 years, you know Disney's currently rebooting the 1992 classic Aladdin in live-action form.

You know, Aladdin? The tale of a street rat with a heart of gold whose wit, charm, and three wishes win over the princess every '90s girl modeled herself after?

My mood is "unimpressed Princess Jasmine" forever.

When He-Man and Skeletor reenact Dirty Dancing

I can't even.Their legs.

When He-Man and Skeletor, the two antagonists from the cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, are reenacting one of the famous scenes from the movie Dirty Dancing. A very weird video playing with two cult references of pop culture, which everything opposes. This video directed by The Bobbsey Twins is apparently a commercial for an American company.

Sport and Guilt – This plant will die if you don’t exercise enough

by ufunk

Would you be motivated?

Here is Phabit, a weird concept of connected object, which will let a plant die if you don’t exercise enough. Connected to your smartphone and social networks, the Phabit will analyze your behavior, and will stop lighting and watering the plant if you do not fulfill your goals: exercise, eat better, sleep better, and so on. Your behavior will therefore have an immediate impact on a living being. Simply frightening. Welcome to the world of data-guilt!

The Phabit is for the moment only a concept created by designer Jen-Hsien Chiu, but it illustrates perfectly this idea of data-guilt, next step of manipulation operated on us by the predictive algorithms and the industries of the BehaveTech, or behavior technologies. To better understand this issue, I invite you to read the excellent article Welcome to the world of data-guilt and BehaveTech (in French) by Olivier Ertzscheid.
