Cyanogen Inc. shutting down along with CyanogenMod

CyanogenMod has been the iconic custom ROM. Thinking of flashing custom software to Android phones, people’s first thought is almost guaranteed to be CyangenMod. Unfortunately, that software is done for.
Cyanogen Inc. has announced that it is shutting down CyanogenMod and all related services. The announcement was extremely brief and gave no detail, which isn’t a good look. With Steve Kondik gone, not much is left of CyanogenMod is left at the company.
CyanogenMod then wrote a long, detailed update for the software. We’re sorry to say that it’s done for. Fortunately, it may not be the end of the soul of the software. The company is producing a fork in the source code (which is sticking around) and rebranding the software to LineageOS, which will remain open source.
So if you’re a big fan of CyanogenMod, there’s hope for the future. But for now, the software will die and nightlies will end.

Google Keyboard updated, renamed to Gboard

Google Keyboard for Android is now officially called Gboard, mirroring the Gboard keyboard released for iOS. This update changes the name and adds a lot of features people have been asking for. Here’s a full changelog:
- G button (enabled in settings) offers quick access to search from the keyboard
- Pop-out toolbar (when G button not enabled) provides access to themes, settings, one-handed mode, and search
- Optional dedicated number row
- Up to three active languages with preference for one (previously had to switch)
- Gesture typing is now called Glide typing.
- Search for emoji
- Rearranged emoji panel with group selection at bottom
- Emoji have bright halo effect around them
- GIF button is always shown, but disabled in apps without support.
The biggest change is the multiple active languages, which will keep autocorrect from changing your foreign words and will allow you to type in different languages without switching between them. Another feature lots of people will like is the optional number row, something many use on other keyboards.
The pop-out toolbar will give you quick access to themes and settings. The G button is a search button so you can search from the keyboard, though a search button is also available in the tool bar.
The update is jam-packed with features and changes, though for Google it’s a big rebranding. The update is rolling out now but you may not get it for a few days, as is typical with big Google updates. Head to the Play Store to see if you can download it now!
