The Next Generation Can't Comprehend A Walkman

Remember popping in a tape cassette of your favorite band into a portable Walkman player? It wasn't that long ago that we all thought a Walkman and a pair of headphones were the ultimate way to listen to music.

In this "Kids React to Walkmans" video by new-media production duo Benny and Rafi Fine -- also known as The Fine Brothers -- kids and teens attempt to figure out the portable cassette player known as the Walkman with mixed results.

"After we covered the rotary phone we wanted to bring something that is more recent technology to see just how far the gap truly was, especially when there are devices like tablets and iPhones now that are a good comparison to things like the portable cassette player to discuss with the kids," Benny Fine told Crave.

In the video, kids and teens alike poke and prod the Walkman, without a clue as to how the portable player actually plays music. The kids also show a similar reaction when handed a plastic cassette tape and asked to put the tape in the Walkman.

"Oh, are these like in the movies?" Krischelle, age 9, asks in the video.

When handed a pair of headphones for the player, one kid smiles and says,"My grandpa has these!"
While many of the kids interviewed complained about how long it takes to put the cassette in the player, plug in headphones, and then listen to the music, another kid counters saying it's just as time-consuming to play music on an iPad.

"On the iPad, you have to go into the Internet, find Pandora, click that thing. You have to make it play, ya know?" Maxim, age 7, says in the video.

While watching this video may make some of us feel ancient, it's important to remind ourselves of the technology from the past so we can appreciate the gadgets of today.

"We find it fascinating as even our whole careers have been made with technology that did not exist even when we were already adults, let alone kids today and just how fast the world can change," Fine told Crave. "It's an important reminder, how we create new things and how it impacts the world, and we should be appreciative of how far we've come, because we really do take it for granted. Think of how quickly we've evolved in just the last few years, or a decade; it's a pretty amazing thing. Honestly, if we gave younger kids even an iPod, they may not fully know how to use it, and the fact it isn't also a phone would make it obsolete to them. Reflection and nostalgia combined -- we love it."

Domino's replaces crust with fried chicken

Joeyjojo

I'm gonna have to eat every fucking chicken in this post.

Domino's is no chicken when it comes to taking risks. The pizza chain is rolling out a new menu item that replaces typical pizza crust with pieces of breaded, boneless chicken.

The new creation, dubbed Specialty Chicken, hits Domino's stores on April 21. Specialty Chicken starts with 12 pieces of boneless chicken and includes layers of Domino's sauces, cheeses and pizza toppings to create four varieties of the item: Crispy Bacon & Tomato, Spicy Jalapeno-Pineapple, Classic Hot Buffalo and Sweet BBQ Bacon.

"Our new Specialty Chicken is one of the most creative, innovative menu items we've ever had," said Russell Weiner, Domino's Pizza chief marketing officer. "Our pizza chefs have taken chicken to a whole new level, using our unique ingredients to create these four bold flavors."

A national TV campaign ad for the chicken creation is rolling out April 21. The ad will focus on the company not being afraid to take risks. As part of the product's promotion, Domino's is giving away 25,000 orders of Specialty Chicken to fans who enter a special contest on its Facebook page.

How much will pizza toppings nestled on a piece of breaded chicken cost you? Specialty Chicken will be available in Domino's $5.99 mix-and-match value offer that also features pastas, sandwiches, medium, two-topping pizzas.

Inside the Episode: The Lion and the Rose

by Lightbringer

In this week’s Inside the Episode David Benioff and Dan Weiss take us behind the scenes of The Lion and the Rose. The pair talk about Stannis’ decision to go all in with Melisandre, as well as Bran getting the coming attractions of what’s in store for him once he masters his ability.

Like the episode, much of the video is dedicated to the Royal Wedding, including the rare opportunity they had to put characters together. They explain that the sequence leading up to Joffrey’s demise was designed to tell us exactly who he is, what this episode means for the structure of season 4, and give a nod to a great actor who will be missed on set, Jack Gleeson.

We are also treated to two shorter videos this week, in the first George R.R. Martin explains Cersei’s immediate accusation of Tyrion, and in the second Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Jerome Flynn talk about Jaime’s first left-handed sword fight.

For even more information on the behind the scenes happenings, James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly has shared some tidbits from his set visit to Croatia when they were filming the wedding celebration. Hibberd admits “there was something supremely satisfying about watching the story’s most despised villain meet his fate over and over again.”

Hibberd notes that it’s true what everyone says about Jack Gleeson, he couldn’t be less like Joffrey, saying that “it was is a bit like viewing schizophrenia.” One of the band members of Sigur Rós told Hibberd, “He’s always giving us this ‘really-sorry’ face… He doesn’t want to throw them at us, but they keep telling him to throw them. It’s amazing how he can play such a bad guy and be such a nice guy.”

During Joffrey’s elaborate pie cutting scene, the mood on set was light:

“Live birds, what would go wrong,” Weiss deadpanned.
“They could fly back to Bosnia,” fellow showrunner David Benioff suggested.
“They could attack Jack and peck his face off,” Weiss countered.
Gleeson practiced with his sword, unable to resist making some whooshing sounds as he swings it about.

And Nikolaj Coster-Waldau couldn’t resist pulling at least one gag:

As Gleeson rehearsed dying on the floor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau rushed into the scene and mock ad-libbed, “My son!” drawing laughs. Then, when Gleeson had to spend sometime playing “dead,” Coster-Waldau held an umbrella shielding the young actor from the sun between takes. “See? I care,” Coster-Waldau said.

For more from Hibberd’s report visit Entertainment Weekly.

The Magician and the Snake: Mike and Katie Mignola (2003).

In honor of the Hallow E’en, he’s some Mike Mignola for you all. Well, in truth, the story was by his daughter, Katie. She won an Eisner for Best Short Story for it, too, making her by far the youngest recipient of the award. Runs in the family, it seems. Here’s an interview with the then-7-year-old on the Dark Horse website/blog:

"I don’t remember much about how I came up with the story other than that I painted a picture of a snake yelling at a bunch of shapes. I didn’t put any more thought into it until my dad asked me what I did at school that day and I told him about the picture. I made up the entire story on the spot and my dad said that he would like to use it in a comic. Over the course of a few months my dad drew the story, changing small details as he went such as the monkey king, which wasn’t in my original story. There were a few things that I wouldn’t let him change such as the magician’s style (he wanted him to be a parlor magician and I wanted a classic stars and moons magician) and the death of the magician. My dad suggested that the magician turn the snake into a lion so that he could eat the shapes and save the magician but I, for some reason, said that the magician had to die at the end."

Beautiful story, beautiful artwork.

That last page is just…You know, there’s a stillness to Mignola’s best stuff that taps right into the blackness.

New villain kicking ass and taking names on Arrow

Joeyjojo

Whaaa

Guess who's showing up on Arrow?

Ravager!!

PUNKD Images was kind enough to give comicbookmovie.com permission to use their sensational Arrow set photos. These two images below above more than likely feature Rose Wilson. She's the daughter of Slade Wilson (Deathstroke).

Who is playing the role? Summer Glau! She is behind that mask. What do you think? Are you glad that Isabel Rochev is under that orange and black mask wielding two swords? What do you guys and gals think of her costume, overall?

Exciting! I'm wondering if they'll go the comic book background or change it up a bit? Going to love the action scenes

RIP Internet Explorer

Joeyjojo

What's the NSW State Government using these days?

After the release of Windows XP in 2001 and for a few years that followed, Internet Explorer 6 was the biggest, most important browser in the world. And for longer, it has been the buggy browser that's overstayed its welcome. Microsoft announced it would support IE6 through April of this year back in 2009, and today (along with XP and Office 2003) is the last day Microsoft will provide updates. Unless you're an old user who couldn't care less or are somehow nostalgic for a broken web, it's finally time to say goodbye.

IE6 is almost universally reviled, and for good reason. Microsoft got cocky in the mid-aughts after beating down Netscape Navigator; because Internet Explorer overall held more than 90 percent of the market, it took a solid five years before IE7 debuted. Meanwhile, security issues slipped through massive cracks, with fixes coming in few and far between. (Nevermind the fact that IE6 was never fully standards compliant.) It got so bad that full-blown campaigns were launched calling for its death. User antipathy contributed directly to browsers like Firefox and Chrome being able to wrest users away from IE in general, and you can generally see a distrust for Microsoft's actually good browsers to this day. Even Redmond got in on the joke.

Unfortunately, the 12-year-old browser still commands 4.15 percent of the market, so it's not completely gone. So do your loved ones a favor and upgrade them to literally anything else. They'll thank you for it.

Spider-Man Spinoff 'Sinister Six' Names Director

Joeyjojo

LOL that they're even trying to create a "Spider-Man universe".

drew_goddard_a_p

The Cabin in the Woods helmer Drew Goddard is nearing a deal to direct Sinister Six, the Spider-Man spinoff that he's also writing.

In December, Sony hired Goddard to pen the script for the film, which will focus on the villains in Spider-Man's world.

In an effort to expand the Spider-Man universe, Sony in December also hired Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Ed Solomon to work on another spinoff, titled Venom, centered on the black-costumed villain that already made his big-screen debut in the third Spider-Man movie of the Sam Raimi trilogy. Kurtzman will direct that project.

The writers will work with Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach and The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb to form what Sony is calling a “franchise brain to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films.”

When Goddard was tapped to write the script for Sinister Six, there was the possibility that he also could direct. Those plans seem to be falling into place.

The Sinister Six has had several permutations in the comics but originally featured Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter. Octopus already appeared in Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, while Sandman was the villain (along with Venom) in Spider-Man 3. Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) are the villains in Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield, is directed by Webb and will hit theaters May 2. Kurtzman and Orci, who did rewrites for Spider-Man 2, are already working on a third installment of Amazing Spider-Man with Jeff Pinkner, who also worked on Amazing Spider-Man 2. Sony has announced a release date for a fourth Amazing Spider-Man movie: May 4, 2018.

Goddard, who worked with Kurtzman, Orci and Jeff Pinkner on TV’s Alias, was one of the saviors of World War Z after that movie ran into third act trouble. He wrote and made his directorial debut with the 2012 horror film The Cabin in the Woods, and will write and executive produce Netflix's Daredevil. Goddard is repped UTA.

"[ROLLING STONE:] You guys are shooting in Iceland this year — where you used to live, right? [RORY..."

[ROLLING STONE:] You guys are shooting in Iceland this year — where you used to live, right?

[RORY McCANN:] I hadn’t shot in Iceland with Game of Thrones before — I’d always shot in Malta or Croatia, and [I] was far too hot in that armor. When I was told I was going to Iceland, I couldn’t believe it. Six or seven years ago I went there to do a Viking film, and at the end of it they were like, “You’re going now?” “No, I’m staying.” “No, no, the job’s over.” [firmly] “No. I’ve got my tent. And I’m staying. Thank you very much.” I phoned my agent and went “Don’t phone me unless I’ve definitely got a job.” He didn’t phone me for a year. [Laughs] “Hello? Anything?” I ended up being a carpenter, building houses. Then their whole market crashed, and I borrowed some money off an actor pal that I met up there and hitched out of the place.

I got there last year to do [this season of] Game of Thrones. I’d hitched out of the place on borrowed money, and suddenly there’s this beautiful blonde driver beside this white Range Rover, all smoked out, going [in Scandinavian accent] “Hello, my name is Herta. Should we go skinny dipping before we go to the hotel?” [Laughs] “That would be lovely, Herta.”

Then I was meeting people over there that still didn’t know me as an actor, they just knew me as the guy who used to go to the library. Some still thought I was a local there. I met old friends again, had my bicycle again, did all my old things again. I only partied on the last night, because I was behaving myself. I thought I was gonna have to get my top off for a scene, so I was working out — I mean, I didn’t even drink water for the last 24 hours. On the day, the director comes up to me, and I’ve got dumbells on set, like [makes weightlifting motions] “YEAH! UHHH! FUCKIN’ READY!!!” He touches me on the shoulder and goes “Rory, I was thinking about it last night — I think we’ll just keep the top on,” and leaves me. “Fucking…I haven’t been out for fucking four months! I haven’t had a beer in fucking three months!”

So that night, Maisie was there, it was our last night in Iceland, it was my one night out…and we got stopped by the police. [Laughs] We were all in a van, we had a designated driver, and we were all drunk — but for Maisie, of course — and singing. The police stopped us, he had his hand on the holster, and the driver went “It’s the cast of Game of Thrones.” “Oh yeah? Open up.” I had the nearest seat. I’ve obviously had a few drinks, and I’m very excited. He looks at me, and I go [booming voice] “Hello! I’m the Hound!” And he looks and says “…Hello, Hound! You enjoy Iceland?” I said a few things in Icelandic, and he’s like “Fuck yeah! Well, you have a good time!” And we went on singing.

- I interviewed Rory McCann, aka The Hound from Game of Thrones, for Rolling Stone, and it was my favorite interview ever.

Winter's Coming

Winter's Coming Robert Simpson is a Muppet who was introduced by Jim Henson in 1986. Robert requires two internal operators to maneuver the legs, lower body, and facial expressions, while two external operators in black suits operate the arms and upper body while guiding Robert around. Formerly voiced by Frank Oz, all four operators now speak in perfect unison. In the summer of 2013, he decided to start working on what he's good at and here we are. He was first featured as a cameo character in works by Ninjaink before breaking off on his own spin-off series in 2013.
