Kepler Finds First Earth-Sized Exoplanet in Habitable Zone

by Will Smith

Over the last ten years, astronomers have discovered hundreds of exoplanets using a handful of techniques, but until now, most of those planets are either outside the habitable zone or are much larger than earth--think gas giants. A newly discovered planet, Kepler-186f, is the first planet in the habitable zone, the orbits around a star where formation of liquid water is possbile, of a comparable size to Earth.

We don't know much about the planet, but Kepler-186f is about 500 light years away, it's about 10% bigger than earth by volume, and it orbits its M-dwarf star every 130 days.

“The world is going bankrupt, (what ever that means) because of this idea called debt, which doesnt even exist in the physical reality, its only part of a game we’ve invented. And yet, the well-being of BILLIONS of people is now being compromised. Extreme layoffs, tent cities, accelerating poverty austerity measures imposed, schools shutting down, child hunger and other levels of familial deprivation…ALL because of this elaborate fiction..what are we, fucking stupid!?” - Peter Joseph

i have always wondered this thank god i’m not just stupid

ive always just understood international debt to be the overall amount of money that all countries owe one another combined? i need more actual information here before accepting the idea that debt isn’t … real? i think is what’s being claimed here? i’m not really … sure how to make heads or tails of this argument? can someone help me? who is peter joseph

Debt is real.

If we wanted to, collectively, we could decide to forgive all the debt currently existing in the world, but that would be a really bad idea for schools and child hunger and everything else.

If we decided to forgive all debt at once, some people (debtors) would be better off, having borrowed money they never have to pay back. Other people (lenders) would be worse off, having loaned money they will never get back.

At first this seems not so bad, since lenders are mostly rich and debtors are mostly poor, and so things will be more equitable and yay. Except no, because what actually happens in these situations (it has happened many times before) is that no one feels confident lending to anybody else, because there is this recent precedent of debtors not returning the money they borrowed from lenders.

When no one feels confident making loans, it’s impossible to raise capital—whether it’s for new businesses or for public works projects like roads or schools. If you can’t raise capital (or if capital becomes very expensive because lenders don’t believe you’ll pay them back), your roads and schools get worse, which makes transporting goods more expensive and your citizenry less educated, which means governments have less money because there’s less income and trade to tax, which means that governments have less money to devote to problems like poor schools and child hunger, and this leads to kind of a miserable spiral, which is why governments don’t like to default on their debt.
