Bill & Frank's Brickhouse Grill in Deland, FL

by Watch Me Eat
Bill & Frank's Brickhouse Grill is a restaurant located in Downtown Deland. I've been here a couple times in the past and always liked the restaurant but never wrote about them on this blog. I took a picture of my food on my most recent visit, so now there's a blog post. The Brickhouse Grill has a very varied menu, ranging from sandwiches, steaks, pastas, salads, and my choice for the evening: barbeque.
I decided to try some the beef brisket and smoked turkey. This was served with garlic toast, mashed potatoes, and pickle slices. The meats had a nice smokey flavor. Out of the two, I preferred the turkey. A couple of the slices of brisket were very fatty. It's unfortunate because the brisket was otherwise tasty. The mashed potatoes had bacon and cheese mixed in for some added flavor.
My meal at Bill & Frank's Brickhouse Grill wasn't perfect with the fatty brisket, but was otherwise good. I'd most definitely return, next time to probably try some of their sandwiches that sound really good.

Pager message sniffing with RPi and SDR

by Mike Szczys

rpi-pager-message-sniffing

The 1990′s called, they want you to use modern technology to listen in on your friends’ pager messages. Seriously, how many people are still using pagers these days? We guess you can find out by building your own Software-Define Radio pager message decoder.

[Sonny_Jim] bought an RTL2832 based USB dongle to listen in on ADS-B airplane communications only to find out the hardware wasn’t capable of communicating in that bandwidth range. So he set out to find a project the hardware was suited for and ended up exploring the POCSAG protocol used by paging devices. It turns out it’s not just used for person-to-person communications. There are still many automated systems that use the technology.

Setting things up is not all that hard. Reading the comments on the project log show some folks are having dependency issues, but these sound rather banal and will be a good chance for you to brush up on your Linux-fu. Once all the packages are installed you’re simply working with text which can be displayed in a myriad of ways. [Sonny] set up a text files on the Pi’s webserver so that he can check out the latest captures from a smartphone.

Subversion 1.8.0 released

by corbet
The Apache Software Foundation has announced a new release of "the most popular and widely-used Open Source version control system" — Subversion 1.8.0. "Since their introduction in prior releases, Subversion’s merge tracking and tree conflict detection features have been critical to its ability to serve projects where branching and merging happens often. The 1.8.0 version improves these features, further automating the client-side merge functionality and improving both tree conflict detection during merge operations and tree conflict resolution during update operations. Additionally, the Subversion client now tracks moves of working copy items as first-class operations, which brings immediate benefit to users today and is a key step toward more thorough system-wide support for moved and renamed objects in a future release."

IAM Policies for User-Specific S3 Buckets

by AWS Evangelist
AWS Identity and Access Management is very powerful and very flexible. My colleague Elliot Yamaguchi has written a blog post that shows you how to use IAM to create a policy which implements folder-level permissions within an Amazon S3 bucket. By using this policy, you can allow hundreds of users to safely share a single bucket, restricting each one to a particular folder within the bucket.

The post contains a complete explanation of the policy. You can use it as-is or you can customize it as needed.

Sandboxie 4.02 introduces full 64-bit protection

by Martin Brinkmann

The sandboxing software Sandboxie is one of those programs that comes in really handy if you are testing a lot of software on your PC. It runs select software in a sandbox that is more or less separate from the underlying system so that malicious code cannot penetrate it.

It is not only ideal for software tests though as you can mitigate different attack forms with it as well. You can use it to mitigate drive by downloads for instance if you are running your browser in a sandbox.

What makes Sandboxie special is that it is offered as a free version as well as a commercial one. The free version is somewhat limited but ideal to test the program to see what it is capable of before you make a buying decision.

Yesterday's update to Sandboxie 4.02 introduces a much requested feature: full 64-bit protection. Sandboxie previously offered protection on 64-bit systems through its Experimental Protection feature which used semi-official kernel interfaces for that. Since those interfaces were not fully documented the feature was tagged as experimental.

The release of Sandboxie 4.02 changes that as the program is now offered full protection for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Windows operating system. The developer has removed the Experimental Protection features as a consequence in the latest version of Sandboxie.

sandboxie

Two additional changes are listed in the program's change log.

First, compatibility with popular programs such as Office 2013, Avast!, EMET, Norton Internet Security or Windows 8 has been improved. Especially Windows 8 users benefit from the change as the previously used Experimental Protection feature was not offered for the 64-bit version of the operating system.

Support for Windows 2000 was removed in the Sandboxie update so that Windows XP Service Pack 3 is now the oldest supported operating system.

You can download the latest version of the program from the developer's website. Note that the installer combines 32-bit and 64-bit versions and that you can overwrite your existing installation to upgrade to the latest version of the application.

Recycling the dead-Sprint's iden network gets scrapped

Recycling the Dead-Sprints iDen network ends iDen was one of Sprint’s first push to talk networks that spread itself all over the US. Allowing the business elite as well as the farm hand to stay in touch with the boss without having to use up their minutes. But now there is a new push to talk sheriff in town, the direct connect network from Sprint. Because of that, iDen must be destroyed.Well not really destroyed, but completely removed from the face of the Earth. Anything that made the iDen network work is being recycled. Cables, batteries, and even the concrete that was used to house the cell sites for the iDen are now on the chopping block. Sprint claims that they will be recycling 100 million pounds of materials. The iDen network service is to end June 30th but the recycling of the iDen materials will continue deep into 2014.Sprint has sent letters, emails, flares, to any and all customers who still work and live on the iDen network. Letting them know that the service is ending, and that they can keep the same push to talk service with the Sprint’s new direct connect service instead. Sprint is still cutting it close by giving users a month to change over their service. But if you have a regular phone that has push to talk capabilities your data and minutes service will not change. But this maybe the beginning of the end for push to talk. Once a sexy new fangled gadget is now an annoying way people can air their personal business while waiting in line at McDonald’s. In the more rural centers of the world push to talk is useful but those places are becoming fewer and farther between. So the interest in push to talk in any form maybe becoming something of the past as well. Making it the next thing on the recycling block.

The Color Nook Death Sale Has Begun

by mikecane

I neglected to check the B&N site this morning, so Paid Content got the news first: Not a good sign: Barnes & Noble just keeps slashing Nook tablet prices

NookDeathSale061713
Click = big

On May 13th, in How The Windows RT Nook Will Happen And Its Price, I wrote:

One thing to watch for: A fire sale price cut on the Nook HD and Nook HD+ to clear out all remaining stocks as soon as possible. This would likely happen before an announcement of Microsoft acquiring Nook Media and signal that such an acquisition will happen. The fire sale could happen within a few weeks with the acquisition announced late June.

And so here we are.

The Color Nook Death Sale.

Unfortunately for Nook Media:

1) There’s not yet any sign these will soon be sold out

2) Even discounted, they’re just not worth buying

Even deep discounts can’t change the fact these tablets are just slow. And there are better options out there, like the Archos 80 Titanium or the Acer Iconia A1-810. Both are unrestricted Android, unmolested Android, and are faster than both color Nooks. And thanks to the Android Nook app, you don’t need to buy a color Nook to read Nookbooks.

Oh, there’s a third thing too: Nook Media shooting itself.

It’s now confirmed news everywhere that Nook Media dropped its Mac and legacy-PC desktop programs, leaving all of those users stranded. But, most importantly, that move damaged Nook Media itself. When you intend to abandon something — like everything other than Windows 8 support — you should synchronize the moves. The desktop software shouldn’t have been killed until the color tablets were both sold out.

I guess William Lynch never saw the movie, Moneyball — and if he did, he forgot the basic lesson in it that applies to his situation:

Would you rather get one shot in the head or five in the chest and bleed to death?

Cutting the desktop software out of sync was like putting five in the chest of Nook Media.

It will now bleed to death, having alienated customers and driven away any remaining potential customers. Even worse: They didn’t admit it for weeks, leaving everyone puzzled.

Nook Media just screwed up its chances of winning people back with a “Nook RT.”

But Microsoft still has deep pockets and all those Nook Media contracts would be a turnkey media platform for them, so unless something market-shaking happens, I still expect Microsoft to acquire Nook Media.

However, given the recent mismanagement of the critical desktop software move, I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft now has Nook Media get out of all hardware altogether. That means we’ll never see a “Nook RT.” Just “Microsoft Nook” software for Windows 8 and RT. The iOS and Android software will remain … for a while.

Larger Payloads (256 KB) for Amazon SQS and SNS

by AWS Evangelist

Today we are raising the maximum payload size for the Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) and the Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) from 64 KB to 256 KB.

We are also adding a new option to allow you to opt for delivery of SNS messages in raw format, in addition to the existing JSON format. This is useful if you are using SNS in conjunction with SQS transmit identical copies of a message to multiple queues.

Here's some more information for you:

  • 256KB Payloads (SQS and SNS) allows you to send and receive more data with each API call.  Previously, payloads were capped at 64KB.  Now, large payloads are billed as one request per 64KB 'chunk' of payload.  For example, a single API call for a 256KB payload will be billed as four requests. Our customers tell us larger payloads will enable new use cases that were previously difficult to accomplish.
  • SNS Raw Message Delivery allows you to pack even more information content into your messaging payloads.  When delivering notifications to SQS and HTTP endpoints, SNS today adds JSON encoding with metadata about the current message and topic.  Now, developers can set the optional RawMessageDelivery property to disable this added JSON encoding.  Raw message delivery is off by default, to ensure existing applications continue to behave as expected.

Getting started with Amazon SNS and Amazon SQS is easy with our free tier of service. To learn more, visit the Amazon SNS page  and the Amazon SQS page.  To learn more about subscribing SQS queues to SNS topics, visit the SQS developer reference guide.

PlayStation 3 Firmware 4.45 Bricks Some Consoles

by Shawn Ingram

PlayStation 3 Firmware 4.45 Bricks Some Consoles is a post by Shawn Ingram from Gotta Be Mobile.

Last night Sony issued a firmware update for the PlayStation 3 that caused issues with some consoles, forcing Sony to pull the update.

PlayStation 3 firmware 4.45 was to bring some new trophies options to the PlayStation 3, giving gamers the option to turn off notifications of when they received a trophy. Instead, many gamers found the update bricked their console, rendering it all but useless for the moment.

PlayStation 3

Some gamers took to Sony’s PlayStation forums to report the problem. Some who applied the update found their console would boot as usual showing the PS3 logo and a flowing ribbon in the background, but the console would stop there. The cross-media bar interface wouldn’t load, and pressing the power button wouldn’t turn off the console.

Some found a fix for the issue that involves putting the PlayStation 3 in Safe Mode and reformatting the console’s hard drive. That method may work, but it will erase any save games or downloaded games from the console. That option is only really viable for PlayStation Plus subscribers who use the cloud save feature of the service, as it means they won’t lose their saved games.

After less than a day of complaints Sony announced that it pulled the firmware 4.45 update from the PlayStation network so it won’t affect other gamers. The company will release a new version of the firmware update as soon as possible so gamers can get back to playing their games and using services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus on the console.

Speaking to Kotaku, Sony asked that gamers with bricked consoles have patience while the company tries its best to get an update out quickly. When the update is available there will be a way for gamers to fix their consoles, likely through putting the update on a USB flash drive and plugging it into the PlayStation 3 console.

'Teacher' Goes Ballistic, Attacks Bradlee Dean Ministry Workers

by Jake MacAulay

A woman who described herself as a teacher of the U.S. Constitution went ballistic over Bradlee Dean's ministry effort at a gasoline station in Florida to drum up support for its campaign to teach the ethics, morality and responsibility of the Bible in public schools.

The woman verbally and physically attacked two ministry workers, Elizabeth Ilse and Chase Schomberg.

Dean reports Ilse was standing behind one of her ministry tables while distributing Christian literature to those visiting the gas station. She simply said, "Hello," to the woman, but after the woman approached and began to read the sign on the ministry's table that said, "Support Christianity in Public Schools, the Constitution, and Honoring Soldiers," she viciously attacked the cause by screaming, "Shame on you for wanting Christianity in schools," calling Ilse a "bigot" and further stating that "Christians are the problem."

The woman threatened to call the police, then yelled, "I'll tell police you are not just harassing, but are assaulting me."

She then assaulted the cameraman with her bag.

"Its totalitarianism," Dean says. "This is what we are seeing out there. They love to pull your hair, they like to smack your face, and they even have the audacity to call the cops and cry victim."

The woman then left the scene only to return a short time later to talk with police. Police asked the ministry workers if they wanted to press charges against the woman.

It's undecided whether the ministry or Dean will press charges.

"It's coming from the atheists, it's coming from the left, and its coming from the liberals," Dean says. "As if to say we have two Constitutions and not one. I like to say if the Right was doing the right thing all the time, we wouldn't have a Left."

Bradlee Dean's ministry, You Can Run International, reaches out to America's next generation through principles of morality, true freedom and personal responsibility.

Dean maintains it's just one of a number of attacks in recent months on his ministry. A high school principal in Florida cut off Dean's First Amendment rights midsentence. Dean later returned to the school to finish delivering his message.

Another controversy emerged over Dean's appearance at a public school in Dunkerton, Iowa, where his ministry was accused of "gay bashing" and warned by the fire chief that the town's roads would be shut down to keep the band from returning. But after a letter from Liberty Council, Dean returned to Dunkerton and spoke at the city's library during the Dunkerton Days festival.

The organization explains its mission is to "equip our next generation with the Christian values that made America great through a unique avenue of music and educational event forums in colleges, schools, churches, festivals and arenas."

The goal is to present that message in schools.

In other developments, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow has been served with a lawsuit by Dean, alleging defamation for her references to Dean's group. The case is on appeal.

Linux Shell:Timeout

by linuxari

Sometimes it’s useful to write a bash script that do something like “Do this job, if it’s still running after XX second kill it”, how to implement this in a normal bash environment ?

Nothing simpler: Use the timeout shell command to achieve this.
From its info page:

timeout runs the given COMMAND and kills it if it is still running after the specified time interval

Let’s see how to use it.

Installation

If you have a system recent enough you should have the command timeout that is part of the coreutils package, for sure it’s not present on Centos 5/Rhel 5 so if you are still using these distributions or another “old” distribution, move to the second part of this article “What to do if you don’t have the timeout command”

Basic Usage

The basic usage of this command is:

timeout [OPTION] DURATION COMMAND [ARG]

timeout will run COMMAND (with its ARG) and if it’s still alive after DURATION it will send a TERM signal to it.

OPTION could be:

-k DURATION, –kill-after=DURATION:
Ensure the monitored COMMAND is killed by also sending a `KILL’ signal, after the specified DURATION. Without this option, if the selected signal proves not to be fatal, `timeout’ does not kill the COMMAND.

-s SIGNAL, –signal=SIGNAL:
Send this SIGNAL to COMMAND on timeout, rather than the default `TERM’ signal. SIGNAL may be a name like `HUP’ or a number.

DURATION is a floating point number followed by an optional unit:
`s’ for seconds (the default)
`m’ for minutes
`h’ for hours
`d’ for days
A duration of 0 disables the associated timeout

Example:

This is a simple example that print the date, run sleep for 10 seconds but with a timeout of 1 second and than run date again:

date; timeout 1 sleep 10; date
Wed Jun 19 23:04:31 CEST 2013
Wed Jun 19 23:04:32 CEST 2013

This simple output shows that the system “sleep” for just 1 second and not 10.

You can watch more examples in the following video:

What to do if you don’t have the timeout command

The best alternative that I’ve found at the moment is the bash script published at this link: http://www.bashcookbook.com/bashinfo/source/bash-4.0/examples/scripts/timeout3

This Bash shell script executes a command with a time-out. Upon time-out expiration SIGTERM (15) is sent to the process. If the signal
is blocked, then the subsequent SIGKILL (9) terminates it.

This should work on any Linux distribution with Bash.

flattr this!

Floridians Urge Governor Scott to Veto Mental Health-Gun Reform Bill

by Matt Horn

A bi-partisan gun bill has made its way to the Governor’s desk. If signed into law, it will prevent tens of thousands of Floridians from buying firearms.
0618guns00000002 0618guns00000001 0618guns
Gun control legislation intended to save lives, may deny thousands of Floridians the right to buy a gun. The legislation is on the Governor’s desk “I would think it would be very difficult for the governor not to sign a bill that keeps guns out of the hands of dangerous people with mental illnesses,” said the National Riffle Association’s Marion Hammer.

The legislation requires people who volunteer for mental health treatment to give up their gun rights. Mental health professionals want Rick Scott to veto the legislation. ”We believe in a sense the federal standard is the sound standard and that is there needs to be an adjudication,” said Florida Council for Community Mental Health’s John Bryant.

Supporters say the bill will only cover people who would otherwise be committed under the Baker Act. Commitment requires a diagnosis of mental illness and is considered harmful to themselves or others. Opponents worry the new bill creates unreasonable time frames for doctors to make life altering diagnosis.

“I think the people who have to implement this bill will find out it’s a lot more complicated and difficult to implement than anyone envisioned,” said Bryant.

Hammer says after a person with mental illness is treated, they’ll be able to petition the court to get their gun rights back. “They will not be able to purchase a gun until they had been treated and a psychiatrist says they need relief from disability,” she said.

Scott has two weeks to decide if he will sign the legislation.

According to the Governor’s Office, 17,008 e-mail’s have been sent, urging Rick Scott to veto the bill. Just one email encourages him to sign the legislation. Additionally, 2,730 calls have been received. 2,711 were in opposition, 12 were in support of the bill and 7 were general questions on the legislation.

MySQL man pages silently relicensed away from GPL (MariaDB blog)

by jake
In what might be seen as a harbinger of license changes to come for MySQL, the MariaDB blog is reporting that the man pages for MySQL 5.5.31 have changed licenses. Formerly covered by the GPLv2, the man pages are now under a more restrictive license, the crux of which seems to be: "You may create a printed copy of this documentation solely for your own personal use. Conversion to other formats is allowed as long as the actual content is not altered or edited in any way. You shall not publish or distribute this documentation in any form or on any media, except if you distribute the documentation in a manner similar to how Oracle disseminates it (that is, electronically for download on a Web site with the software) or on a CD-ROM or similar medium, provided however that the documentation is disseminated together with the software on the same medium. Any other use, such as any dissemination of printed copies or use of this documentation, in whole or in part, in another publication, requires the prior written consent from an authorized representative of Oracle."

[Update: A MySQL bug report indicates that a build system problem led to the relicensing, which will presumably be fixed in the next release.]

New DRM-Free Ebook Store for Indie Authors, Publishers

by DBW

[Press Release]

Tomely (www.tomely.com), an ebookstore for independent publishers and authors, is set to launch today. Tomely has been designed specifically to facilitate direct transactions between readers and their favourite indie authors and publishers.

All ebooks sold through Tomely are DRM-free, and Tomely allows readers to easily load purchased books directly onto any of their favourite devices, or send them to social reading services like Readmill.

“Tomely is about building an ebookstore for what savvy readers and publishers want in 2013,” said Connor Tomas O’Brien, Lead Designer at Tomely. “There’s a place for the big mega-mall style online ebookstores, but what’s been missing is the digital equivalent of your friendly indie bookstore.”

Tomely provides publishers and authors with the ability to sell directly through their own existing websites, manage their own promotions using a flexible coupon-code generator, and easily send galley copies of books to reviewers. While other ebookstores can force publishers to wait weeks or months for payments to process, Tomely facilitates direct transactions between readers and publishers.

“Tomely seems to have all the bases covered for selling ebooks,” said Adam Robinson, Founding Editor of Publishing Genius Press.

“Instead of trying to create another ‘Walled Garden’, we want Tomely to work well with the devices and services readers and publishers already use,” said Fred Fan, Lead Developer at Tomely. “A reader can receive a discount from Tomely promoting a book on Twitter, read the book they’ve purchased from Tomely on Readmill, then share a readable preview of that book on Tumblr.”

One particularly interesting component of Tomely is the ‘Infinite Book’ (http://tomely.com/infinite-book), which generates an endless page full of random samples of text pulled from inside ebooks uploaded to Tomely. When it was launched last year, the Infinite Book was praised on the Oprah.com blog as “a lovely way to find a new book to read and a lovely way to think about reading.”

Barnes & Noble Extends Nook Father’s Day Sale, Continues Discounting Pattern

by DBW

Since earlier in the year when Barnes & Noble announced disappointing device and content sales for its Nook ebook business, the company has been on the warpath to sell as many Nook devices as possible — and the weapon of choice has been discounting.

These latest prices for the Nook HD tablet and Nook HD+ ($129 and $149, respectively) put them below the Kindle Fire and other comparable tablets. By comparison, the Fire with special offers (read: advertising) is now available on Amazon.com for $159. While these Android tablets aren’t exactly fungible, they are of the same generation and have very similar specifications.

See a list of all the recent Nook device and content discounting from the first half of the year here.

Sick Time Bill Signed Into Law by the Governor

by Matt Horn

A controversial measure that blocks local governments from requiring employers to offer paid sick time has been signed into law by Governor Rick Scott.

Feeling sick? Beginning July first you may no longer be eligible for sick time. A new state law takes away local government ordinances requiring employers to offer paid sick time. “This law will take away their right to make those decisions for themselves at the local level,” said spokesman for the Florida Coalition for Local Control, Damien Filer.

The Florida Coalition for Local Control fought the bill in the legislative process. The group argues the new law wrongfully separates the poor and women from everyone else. “It’s disappointing; the Governor clearly sided with big corporation over the interest of many Floridians,” said Filer.

Those in support of the law say it creates consistency for employers across the state. “It creates consistency, predictability and conformity of regulation through-out the state. Anytime a business is looking to settle or move to Florida they have to see what regulations will cost them,” said Florida Retail Federations General Counsel, Samantha Padgett.

“Before the bill was signed into law, two neighboring counties may have had different sick-time laws. Now, when you cross into a new county, the laws will be the same,” Matt Horn reported.

“It really does encourage development and it really does protect our economic growth in the state of Florida and encourage the economic growth,” said Padgett.

“Those are great talking points, but there is no truth…and what we see consistently is when earned sick times are in place that it increases the economic stability of those places,” said Filer.

Opponents say they will work closely with the state to make sure employees, not just employers, are protected under this new law.

A recent public poll shows 8 in 10 Floridians support employers providing sick time benefits.
