"Let Her Go" Movie Cliché Supercut

by Joey Paur
let-her-go-movie-clich-supercut

The Huffington Post has released another fun movie supercut. This one includes several movie scenes with the line of dialogue… "Let her go." You don't ever really realize how many times you've actually heard this phrase in the movies, but when you see it played out one after another like this it's kind of crazy. What else is a guy going to say, though, if a girl they care about is being held against her will? Of course "let her go!" would be a person's first instinct. Unless you have a gun and you're confident enough in your skills to take a shot and kill the bastard without hurting the girl you're trying save.

Violently Fun PORTAL Gun Duel Action Short

I've got an incredibly cool short film for you to check out that feature a Portal gun duel, and it's entertainingly action-packed. There's also a lot of humor that was thrown into it. The video comes from YouTube user RackaRacka, and it came with the following caption: "Its [sic] man VS man in this portal gun battle to the death. Don't play with guns!!!" It features two friends who just go absolutely ballistic on each other with their Portal guns. It gets pretty insane and violent. It's definitely worth a watch if you a looking for a little entertainment.

Suddenly, Dracula Untold Is The Start Of Universal's New Monsterverse

We knew Universal had designs to beginning a Marvel-style cinematic universe based on its classic stable of monsters; supposedly the inaugural movie was going to be the aptly titled The Mummy: The First Monster in 2016. But apparently Dracula Untold has been retrofitted to be the birth of the monster-verse.

Has Ethan Hawke Been Cast as DOCTOR STRANGE?

by Joey Paur
beaver

oh?

has-ethan-hawk-been-cast-as-doctor-strange

The last we heard, Joaquin Phoenix was in final talks to be cast in the role of Doctor Strange in Marvel's upcoming film production. It looks like things may have changed if a new report from a site called This is Infamous is true. They claim that Ethan Hawke had actually been offered the part and that the actor also accepted the job. Here's what they say:

"Ethan Hawke is their new guy, having offered him the role on Friday. I hear Hawke accepted the job over the weekend, and things have quickly progressed into contract talks, with a six-picture deal being what Marvel is hoping to lock him into."
WhimsicalRococohawke

I have no idea if this is true or not, but it is definitely plausible. After all, Hawke worked with director Scott Derrickson on the horror movie Sinister. It would make sense that the two would want to work together again, and why can't it be on a film like Doctor Strange? I really hope that this true, because Hawke is an amazing actor who I think would fit perfectly in the role.

Until we receive some kind of confirmation, we'll treat this as a big fat rumor. But what do you think about the possibility of Hawke in the role of Strange?

Doctor Strange is scheduled to start shooting next year and will be released in the summer of 2016.

Hurray! more work for me!

Product placement technology just leveled up

Imagine you are watching The Beastie Boys' classic video for Sabotage when suddenly you realize, much to your confusion, that Mike D (aka Alasondro Alegre) isn't holding a 70's era walkie talkie but a Sony Xperia Z3 smart phone. You may wonder what it could be. Is it a mirage? But I am tellin' all ya' all this is just a brand new way advertisers are going to try shove their products into your coveted eyeballs. Turns out Universal Music Group has signed a deal to let companies "digitally insert their products into previously released music videos." The wild thing is these old videos will work as a glorified billboards where product advertisements can be digitally swapped in and out at will. Mike D can now hold anything advertisers have paid enough for him to hold. Today a smart phone, tomorrow a Beats Pill, next week a Twinky, a month later a Shake Weight...the possibilities are endless!

15 Best Pieces of 1980s NES Cartridge Box Art

by Joey Paur
beaver

the greatest collection of commercials ever.

I recently posted a great piece of art that featured a little kid blowing into an original Nintendo Entertainment System game cartridge. It got me thinking about all the games I used to play back in the day, and I started looking up some old stuff to reminisce on those good old days. As I was skimming through some stuff, a lot of video game cartridge images were popping up and I noticed there was some really cool art that was created for some of these games. One of the other things I noticed is that the bad art outweighed the good, so I thought I'd pluck out a few of the coolest NES game cartridge illustrations that I came across and do a little post for them. Castlevania sure seemed to know what they were doing when it came to the art as the first three games top the list.

Each piece that I included actually has some artistic flare too it. An artist actually put in some effort into making it feel badass. A lot of the game art just wasn't like that back in the day. There was a lot of logo art, a lot of pixilated art, and some really bad art. I'm sure the good art helped in the marketing and selling of the game. I know I only wanted to play the games with the radical art on the cover. Sometimes that game would suck ass. You can't judge a game by its cover, even if the cover of the book looks awesome. On top of the art, I also included a little game play action or a commercial for each one.

by Eli Reyes

amazing

This hilarious supercut by Screen Junkies uses scenes from X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men The Animated Series (as well as some other surprise footage) to show that Professor X is a wimp. You would think that Professor Charles Xavier, a man who helps mutants learn to control their abilities and cope with a world that persecutes them, would be cool under pressure. He isn’t just a brilliant mind, he can control minds. He isn’t just a leader, he assembled one of the greatest superhero teams in history. But when 1970s Charles Xavier looks into the mind of a time-traveling Wolverine, he sees his future self whining, whimpering, and consistently dropping the ball.

DEAD RISING Movie Details Revealed

by Joey Paur
beaver

oh boy.

dead-rising-movie-details-revealed

Legendary Pictures is currently in the process of developing a digital feature film based on Capcom's zombie survival video game Dead Rising. The movie is being directed by Zach Lipovsky (Leprechaun: Origins) who recently did an interview with /Film. During that interview he revealed a good amount of details on what he's planning for the film.

Before we get into those details, here's the cast of the movie that was announced yesterday. Jesse Metcalfe (John Tucker Must Die, Desperate Housewives, Dallas), Meghan Ory (Once Upon A Time, Intelligence), Virginia Madsen (Sideways, Candyman, The Number 23), Dennis Haysbert (24, The Unit), and Keagan Connor Tracy (Bates Motel, Once Upon A Time, Battlestar Galactica).

Dead Rising may seem like it will be just another zombie film, but the director explains how this one will set itself apart from the other zombie films and TV shows,

"I think the franchise actually brings a lot of new energy to the genre that we haven’t seen in a zombie movie. The idea that you can be bitten and remain human as long as you take your medicine everyday, is very interesting and dramatic. Similar to the social stigma of living with HIV.

"Another very cool element from the game is the zombies remember a little bit about their previous lives. There is something really haunting about seeing a zombie cop randomly firing his gun, or a zombie mom pushing a stroller.

"Finally what I love in Dead Rising is the city is locked down, but the rest of the world is fine. Families are watching the zombie apocalypse on TV while eating dinner like it’s the Super Bowl. We’re taking a lot of inspiration from real world events like Hurricane Katrina, the Ebola outbreak even the Ferguson Riots."

The director goes on to explain that this will be an adventure movie, with dark and scary moments. When describing the tone he said it was Indiana Jones with zombies. "Fun, scary, dramatic action." When asked about the setting of the film, he revealed the following:

"The film is set in a new outbreak with new heroes, in a new city. So it’s not a direct adaptation of one of the previous games, but it does fit into the cannon of the storyline. It takes place between the Fortune City outbreak in Dead Rising 2 and Los Perdidos outbreak from Dead Rising 3. So it’s a part of the greater franchise narrative. Of course some familiar faces show up as well."

I'm glad that they are changing things up a bit for the movie, and not doing a direct adaptation. It will make things more interesting. You know what else makes movies like this more interesting? Lots of freakin' zombies to destroy!

"One zombie isn’t scary, a horde that you can’t get through without a chainsaw is very scary. We’re pulling every favor we can do have some monster zombie set pieces. The rest will be a matter of focusing on locations and situations where a smaller number in a confined space still has full effect. Some of the most exciting parts of the game are when you’re in a tiny room filled with zombies. Pretty much every person I know has already emailed me saying they want to be a zombie, so I think [we'll] be fine. We are also planning a long one take action shot with hundreds of zombies which I’m very excited about."

I know this is only going to be a digital feature, but I'm a big fan of the video game franchise, and I'm excited about watching the movie. If you want to read more from the interview, head on over to /Film. There he talks more about the process of making a digital feature, and what that means for fans.

Dead Rising is scheduled to start shooting on September 30th in Vancouver, and it will premiere exclusively on Crackle in the US. It will be distributed internationally in both episodic and feature format by Content Media Corp. After the movie has its run on Crackle it will then be released on SVOD, DVD, VOD and TV.

9-Minute VFX Breakdown for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

OoOoooooOO

Last week, Fox released a special effects featurette for X-Men: Days of Future Past that gave us a look at some of the visual and practical effects behind the Quicksilver prison break sequence. That got me salivating for all of the extras that will be included in the Blu-ray, which is due out October 14th. Here is a 9-minute VFX breakdown by Digital Domain that probably won’t be included on the Blu-ray release, but that does give you a greater appreciation of all the movie magic that went into making Mystique morph, Magneto lift RFK Stadium, and Sentinels take over the White House.

Yes... because of the terrible writing. Awful show, it was like a ten year old wrote it. "Lets have everyone tell each other their full names." WOrked great in that shitty Spiderman sequel.

Whatever issues the first episode of Gotham had, this newest trailer for the show — one that teases the entire first season — indicates it could very well deliver on the potential seen in the premiere. But if it's not going to deliver on the potential, it's definitely going to deliver more Bat-villains.

FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 HD and XV - Moving In The Right Direction

by Matthew Mueller
beaver

Devil may cry final fantasy?

Square-Enix had a nice showing at TGS this year, and to top it off, it was actually from its biggest (in name, not necessarily in sales recently) franchise, Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, the remaster of the Japan only PSP game, is looking sharp, and features a nation at war feel that Final Fantasy XIII only scratched the surface of. If you've been keeping up with the XIII universe, there will be some recognizable lore, but Type-0's premise is much more intriguing. I love games and movies alike that center on a small band of heroes or soldiers that face impossible odds, i.e. Magnificent 7, The Dirty Dozen, The Untouchables, and Harry Potter — you know, when Voldemort  attacked Hogwarts and all the students stood against him? Maybe that is a stretch, but oh well.

Here is the official synopsis.

Step into the fray as Class Zero, a group of fourteen students from an elite military academy whose country is attacked by an aggressive neighboring Empire. Using the powerful abilities and magic of all fourteen characters in fast-paced action RPG combat, players must face the brutality and injustices of war to uncover the secrets of its genesis.

Peep the trailer above for a closer look, but for me it hits all the right notes. I just hope it controls and plays up to par with its visuals.

screenshots__1_.jpg
screenshots__2_.jpg
screenshots__3_.jpg

Speaking of visuals, Square-Enix had another ace up its sleeve, and announced that Type-0 will be shipping with a playable demo of the long gestating Final Fantasy XV, and lord is it beautiful. The fact that the game exists in playable form at all is surprising enough, but the trailer they dropped as well as the extended TGS footage was very impressive. Two years ago, Square-Enix gave the project over to Hajime Tabata, and since then it has maintained its initial identity while finally nearing completion.

Kotaku recently ran a fantastic interview with the director where he touched on a few things. XV definitely has a feel of its own, much different than the recent entries, in that it focuses on four companions that travel the world together. While there will be an overarching story, impossibly epic in scope I'm sure, the game is more focused on what you do on your way there than past games. You can see some of that in the trailer, as the four individuals travel in their slick Batman car, and marvel at the sights around them. It's a far cry from the narrow pathways of XIII. Add to that a Kingdom Hearts-esque combat system and you have a great deal of potential. In the interview, Tabata also touched on his aspirations for the game and what Final Fantasy used to mean to a console generation.

"Before I joined Square Enix, I always looked at Final Fantasy games as the benchmark for game consoles," Tabata said. "Each new game showed what was possible on video game hardware."
"If we don't do something that people think is amazing, it's meaningless," Tabata said. "If we don't do something that's challenging, it's also meaningless."

Final Fantasy has never shied away from doing something different, but ever since Final Fantasy X, the franchise hasn't given off that same sense of awe that it used to. XV is the first time I've felt that in quite awhile, and while the stakes are as high as the hype, I truly hope this is the return to form the series needs.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is slated for release on March 17th 2015 on Xbox One and PS4. The release for Final Fantasy XV is TBA, but will be also on Xbox One and PS4.

Sunset Overdrive Live-Action Trailer on Why You Shouldn't Do a Sunset Overdrive Live-Action Trailer

beaver

And here is the reason they shut down xbox entertainment studios.

I'm not sure why live-action game trailers are still a thing in an era where part of the point is to show how realistic your graphics are - but Sunset Overdrive basically destroys the concept in this spot that shows just how irresponsible and ridiculous you'd have to be to attempt to capture the game's madness in reality. It also makes damn sure that the quote "Get ready to die, asshole!" will be seared in your brain as the game's catchphrase. So it's actually pretty insidious subliminal marketing that way. Whatever. I need to go get an orange energy drink RIGHT FUCKING NOW for some reason. Continue reading "Sunset Overdrive Live-Action Trailer on Why You Shouldn't Do a Sunset Overdrive Live-Action Trailer" >

Terrifying Trailer for Guillermo del Toro's SILENT HILLS Video Game

by Joey Paur

Thoughts?

terrifying-trailer-for-guillermo-del-toros-silent-hills-video-game

The Silent Hill games are scary as hell, and that's the main reason I enjoy playing them so much. This next installment of the franchise, Silent Hills, could end up being the best in the series. The game is being developed by film director Guillermo del Toro and Metal Gear Solid creator Kideo Kojima. To make things even more awesome, The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus is starring in the game. We actually got our first look at him in a teaser that was previously released

This latest trailer is a concept trailer that comes from TGS 2014, and in it we get a creepy-ass walkthrough showing off the hellish atmosphere and creatures. It's the perfect nightmare fuel. There still aren't that many details about the game yet, but when they start coming out, we'll give you the info.

Over the years we've seen lots of fan films for lots of different comic book characters, but Todd McFarlane's Spawn isn't one we see too often. This short film is called "Spawn: The Recall," and it was directed by Michael Paris. It's pretty good for a fan made film and it has a couple of cool visuals. It's not the greatest short film in the world but I thought it'd be something that our readers would be interested in seeing. Here's a synopsis:

SPAWN : THE RECALL is the story of a former witch and her son, who try to live a normal life away from the darkness.  While they're shopping in a supermarket, the child suddenly disappears. She starts looking for him, freaked out knowing evil forces are still lurking. A security guard comes to her help but while they are checking on the surveillance cameras, something happens. She can sense it, they are here...
