Japan Will Not Let Up

by Brinke

The Land Of the Rising Sun consistently kicks our butt outperforms the US when it comes to The QTE. We’re just helpless ovah heah. We just saw the otters shaking hands deal, right? Now this. Cuteporter William D. sends in an email with the subject line “Oh my, the one with the duck on his head.”

That gets my attention.

A duck on someone’s head? (FYI the top row that comes on at about 1:07.) Must check it out. So William goes on to say “Animated cute, but…have you seen this? It’s amazing. Japan wins the cute arms race again.”

Yes. Yes, they do.

Again.

Get ready for the big bang as 3D printing patents expire

by Cory Doctorow
Agreencat

SLS Printing the way to go.

The key patents covering a 3D printing technique called "laser sintering" are set to expire in the next year or two -- there are a bunch of them, so they'll trickle out -- and this will radically reduce the price of printing and printers. Laser sintering involves melting a fine powder (usually plastic) in order to fuse it with the powder below and around it, and it's a technique that produces a very smooth, even finish. The big 3D printer manufacturers, who control the laser sintering patents, have used patent law to lock up the market for devices, and to prevent device-owners from sourcing their powder from third parties. As a result, simple, cheap plastic powder can cost more than filet mignon by weight, which means that the cost of 3D printed objects is very high -- especially when you factor in the extremely high cost (and high profit margins!) on the printers themselves.

As these patents expire, it will mean that mass-manufactured printers from China and elsewhere will be able to integrate laser-sintering, setting aside the extruded plastic wire technique that is presently standard. With wire-extrusion, a wire filament is melted inside a print-head, and then forced out of a fine nozzle, like icing coming out of an icing bag. This produces a rougher finish and is prone to delamination during the print-process.

Patent expiry will also open new horizons to the world of hacker/maker printers, like the RepRap and its derivatives. These open-source hardware printers will likewise be able to integrate laser sintering, and to take advantage of a coming explosion in plastic powder suppliers.

All told, it's an exciting moment to be in. 3D printing is a minefield of stupid patents -- there's a patent on putting see-through plastic windows on the sides of a 3D printer! -- but thankfully, they're mostly old and starting to expire. Give it a couple of years and there will be a very robust, open marketplace of cheap, innovative, and open printers flooding the market.

Within just a few years of the patents on FDM expiring, the price of the cheapest FDM printers fell from many thousands of dollars to as little as $300. This led to a massive democratization of hobbyist-level 3D printers and injected a huge amount of excitement into the nascent movement of “Makers,” who manufacture at home on the scale of one object at a time.

A similar sequence involving the lifting of intellectual property barriers, a rise in competition, and a huge drop in price is likely to play out again in laser deposition 3D printers, says Shapeways’ Scott. “This is what happened with FDM,” he says. “As soon as the patents expired, everything exploded and went open-source, and now there are hundreds of FDM machines on the market. An FDM machine was $14,000 five years ago and now it’s $300.”

3D printing will explode in 2014, thanks to the expiration of key patents [Christopher Mims/Quartz]

Black Canary might not be the first to get the bombshell treatment, but if I do say so myself she looks stunning. She joins Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn in this gorgeous new series designed by Ant Lucia. Each statue runs for about $100 and must be reserved because they are limited edition, so if you want to get one it’s a good idea to go do that sooner rather than later! I have a feeling these Canaries aren’t going to be around for long.

Zach Braff helps man propose to his girlfriend in heart-warming video

by connorsephton2013

If there’s one time you could use a wingman, it’s when you’re making a wedding proposal. But who do you choose?

Matt Hulbert, who was popping the question to his girlfriend, Janice, had only one guy in mind – Zach Braff.

Mr Hulbert had made a pledge to the Scrubs star’s Kickstarter project for his upcoming film and in return asked if the actor would make a cameo appearance in the proposal video he was preparing.

Braff said yes, and filming began.

The video starts with Janice sitting down in front of a computer, with Matt pressing play and she soon has the surprise of her life.

In the video, the actor is listening to a song performed by Matt, and says: ‘He asked me to help with a little question he’d like to ask you, Janice. Whoa, Janice… looking hot.

‘He’d like you to please consider being his wife, being his bride. But before you answer, let’s see what a few other people think you should do.’

What follows are dozens of clips from the couple’s loved ones. Janice, who lives in the UK, wipes her eyes as she sees family and friends from her home in America telling her to say ‘yes’.

Braff then adds: ‘Well, that’s pretty unanimous. Let’s be honest, you’re never going to score anyone else this hot, so I’d stick with her. She’s a babe, and we all know how great she is. Marry her. As Beyoncé says, “If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it”. Good luck.’

Luckily for Matt, his efforts didn’t go to waste, and Janice said yes.

Here’s what happened when hundreds of super cute corgis got together for a beach party in California.

More than 300 of the Queen’s favourite breed of dog descended on the west coast of the US for the biggest canine bash of the year- Corgi Beach Day.

With so many corgis in one place, owners (simply referred to as ‘the help’) were encouraged to dress their pets in colourful accessories.

Some of them came dressed in hats, goggles and bandanas, although this Corgi in a pair of floral trousers has to be our favourite.

The Mary Sue Talks to Greg Rucka About Forever Carlyle and Lazarus

by Susana Polo

Greg Rucka is a comics writer whose female characters we love to follow, from detective Rene Montoya and Kate Kane (The Question and Batwoman, if you’re nasty) in post-crisis DC comics, Rachel Cole-Alves in Marvel’s Punisher series, and that’s all without mentioning British special operative Tara Chase, Portland PI Dexedrine Parios, or steampunk pirate captain Lady Seneca Sabre. He’s got a new comic series with its first issue out tomorrow, featuring a new improbably named heroine, Forever Carlyle. Rucka sat down with us and some other reporters last week to answer questions about Lazarus. We invite you to read the interview and check out a prelude story and preview pages from Lazarus #1, which will hit physical and digital shelves tomorrow.

Moderator: We can just open with you saying a little bit about it, about Forever, our main character and the world.

Greg Rucka: Well, I dunno, we’ve been describing it as sort of Godfather meets Children of Men but I suppose that’s a little disingenuous. We’ve used the phrase dystopian future, but I suppose that’s a little tired. The idea behind the series is one of those sort of – like they used to say on Max Headroom: “twenty minutes into the future.” But it’s further than that, it’s a world that has suffered a huge economic collapse, where the rich and the poor are incredibly divided, where there’s very few of the rich and there’s lots and lots of the poor. And those who actually have wealth, you know, wealth has become the truest instrument of power, so that those who have it will do almost anything they can to keep it. And into this world is Forever Carlyle, who is the, quote unquote, “youngest” daughter of the Carlyle family, one of these sort of wealthy ruling families, and she is sort of their – I don’t want to say their secret weapon, but she is the standard bearer for the family’s defense, and as a result of that she is the recipient of everything that the family can offer. Carlyle’s wealth and power has come initially from agribusiness and that has lead to genetic modification and that has lead to gene work with people. Every family has either a Lazarus or a similar force, and it is a title, it is a slaying term for this type of person, this individual who is the sort of bloody sword and iron shield for their family. So that’s it kind of in a nutshell, and then Forever’s story is of course that she is, you know, not who she thinks she is, and it is in many ways a journey of self-discovery. I’m not sure that’s helpful, I give a really bad pitch [laughs].

Reporter: You’ve said that Forever is kind of a genetically modified human, and yet she’s still supposed to be part of the family. Does that kind of separation in biology lead to any conflicts that kind of push the story forward?

Yeah, I mean, I don’t think it’s a huge spoiler to say that (and it’s very clear, actually, in the second issue when you see her other siblings; she’s got a brother named Jonah) Forever has been raised to believe that she is the biological daughter, but she’s not. I mean, how she was made is a mystery to her, and there is a sincere concern that should she ever find out the truth behind her creation, they would loose control of her. So there’s actually active deception. We did that four page prelude story, and it was a three character story: it was her father Malcolm, talking to, basically, the lead scientist who monitors and maintains her (because she has to be maintained, she has a maintenance schedule, effectively), and at the same time were’ watching Forever off doing Dad’s dirty business. And her father tells James, tells this scientist, “She believes she’s my daughter, she believes that I love her, and that is how I control her.” You know, obviously, one of the immediate tensions is when that’s going to break. How long can you maintain this deception? And different people within the family have different agendas with regards to her, they want to control her, or they want to use her for their own ends. I don’t know if that answers the question.

Reporter: That was great, thanks.

Yay! I got one right!

Reporter: Can you talk a little bit about some of Forever’s training, what she’s capable of, and maybe the kinds of obstacles she has to face, what kind of forces she needs to be a weapon against?

Her biggest ability is (and this is, I want to say, semi-consistent through the other Lazur…i (I guess) from other families), is that she’s very hard to kill. She’s not immortal, but her ability to recover from injury is a level of technology that is almost indiscernible from magic. I did a lot of research on this and a lot of sort of speculative extrapolation on it, and it’s a leap from where we are going but it’s not an impossible leap. So that’s essentially her primary – her primary strength is that you just, you really can’t stop her. And that right there is a problem. Then on top of that you have the exact kind of genetic engineering you would expect if you were going to put this into your warrior/bodyguard/soldier/spy, she is very quick, she is very strong, she has a variety of resistances and immunities, all of which arise from the genetic level. It isn’t “I’m gonna lift a car and throw it,” but is is a high upper end human spectrum ability. There’s an interesting body of research out there right now that talks about where we’re going in, say, professional sports in the next 20 or 50 years, and how gene therapy and blood platelet replacement therapy and so on can very logically lead to sort of these malformed professional athletes. Because as you as give them denser muscle mass and so on, you need to redesign the skeletal system to support them, you need to provide a larger thoracic capacity for respiration and circulatory purposes. So that’s sort of the skill set. Now, you can take all that, but if you put a sword into somebody’s hand, with that ability, they may be able to swing it really hard but it doesn’t mean they’re going to hit what they swing at. So, she has been raised from the beginning and trained from the beginning to do certain things. And more importantly, or perhaps just as importantly, she’s been raised to believe certain things like… the family is correct. That these peasants, The Waste, as they’re called, do not matter in the face of the family. That her father is always right. And that’s both conditioning as a product of nurture as often as her design; it goes to her maintenance schedule.

There are things that she faces… in theory, the ultimate purpose of a Lazarus is to destroy the enemy of the family. To do that you have to be able to destroy the other family’s Lazarus. And since so much of what’s driving the wealth of this world is about greed and possession, the ideal conflict is one that retains infrastructure and retains material, right? “I don’t want to bomb your city, I want to take your city. I want to chop off the head; there’s no point in me destroying your people. Especially if your people don’t matter to you. My goal is I’m gonna need to be able to take you out.” So, there’s an aspect of sort of that upper level political slash military conflict that she should be able to act well on a battlefield, but she should just as easily be able to survive in very specific assassination operations or one-on-one combat. It’s not a world with monsters per se; some of the people are definitely monstrous, but certainly at the start the conflicts that she finds herself involved with are with people of meat and bone. Long rambling answers. I’m good at those!

The Mary Sue: I’ve always enjoyed your big ensemble casts in Queen and Country and Gotham Central, and I was wondering if you could talk about about the extended cast of Lazarus.

Um. Oh boy, how do I answer… Well, lets see. Obviously her family… it is a large family, so her siblings, her parents, all play a part. She’s got her dad, she’s got two older brothers, Steven and Jonah, Jonah has a twin sister Joanna, and then she has another older sister Bethany. All of them have very specific agendas and opinions regarding Forever. Her mom, we actually (it’s funny Michael and I have been talking about this a lot lately) her mom we’re holding in reserve. When her mom appears that’s actually a story for her. For lack of a better phrase, I guess, her presumptive mom, as opposed to her biological mom. Her relationships with family are all power relationships. She’s not a servant, but she is always aware of her place in the family. Some do a better job than others of interacting with her. For instance, Bethany worked with James, the doctor, one of her designers. Bethany worked with the man who created her. Forever doesn’t know this, so Forever doesn’t understand why Bethany has this particular interest in when she takes her pills, why she’s always getting checkups from her sister, other than: that’s the thing Bethany does, Bethany’s focused in the sciences. Her relationship with James is far more intimate. But one of the ways that they control her is through I think, again, that withholding and granting of affection and of approval. There are very few relationships that she has within the family structure that are not dictated by that. In our third issue she has been sent – again, I don’t think this is a spoiler – in the third issue she’s been sent to another family, at her father’s request, to basically engage in negotiations. And when she arrives, she is interacting with their Lazarus, a man named Joachim, and that relationship is entirely different, it isn’t as adversarial as one might presume. So part of what the story is, is actually how her experience with other people outside of this rigid structure she has been created in leads to more questions, and her growth, and the way she changes. When Joachim shows up I think, I’ve really, I’ve been having a lot of fun with the character. I’ve been having a lot of fun the whole book, I mean, frankly, it’s, right now, the book that I want to be working on when I’m working on other things, for the most part. Which I take as always a good sign.

Reporter: I’m curious how the working relationship with Michael Lark is different on this book than some of your DC or Marvel collaborations.

I mean obviously the editorial system with Image is entirely different. Our ability to, you know, jump in and collaborate really, fully top to bottom on it, it’s not a relationship that one can easily find at either of the Big Two. I’m sure there are people who have successfully been able to do it, I’ve rarely rarely been able to accomplish it. Michael is, I think he’s one of the best graphic storytellers working today, I mean without question. One of the other things that, you know ’cause you don’t see it, it doesn’t look like it falls into his domain when you’re reading the book, Michael is actually terribly, terribly smart and he’s got a great story sense. And the ability to collaborate with him so fully, that’s unique. I mean, I’ve just, neither of us have had this opportunity before. So I can call him up and literally say “I’m thinking this thing,” you know, or “this is the idea,” and he’ll come back with three or four other things. And the other thing that I really love in the working relationship with him is that the script is dynamic. When I’m working with Michael the script is dynamic. You work at the Big Two, you know, and you’re working on say, Punisher. The script has to be in by X time so the artist can get ot work on it, and at that point the communication and the ability to alter the script on the fly, and as inspiration strikes, is very limited. Michael and I, I give him the script, he works, and then I’ll get an email, I’ll get a call, and it will be as much about storytelling as about story that we’re telling. And I love that, I mean I just, it is so exciting and it’s so energizing. It is the fullest sense of collaboration. It’s been fantastic so far.

Reporter: Can you talk al little bit about world building and how you reveal the scope of this world to the readers? Is this the kind of story where we’re gonna have a good sense of how big this world is, how many players are involved, after two or three issues? Or is it something that’s going to take a bit longer? Or is it always going to be a little bit mysterious?

I think it’s a little of column A and a little of column B. I think one of the things that we’ve done successfully in this first arc, in these first four issues, is to sorta paint the world broadly and paint the, sort of, political tensions, the power balance of the world? We do not have a lot of opportunity in these four issues to really go down amongst the people who are suffering the most. That’s something that is in our second arc. We reveal more of that.
We don’t list all the families. You get mentions of this name or that name, we know there’s Carlyle, we know there’s Moray, there’re like 28 other families… So I’ve always… this may be an odd answer: I remember picking up William Gibson‘s Neuromancer when I was in high school and thinking that the way he had revealed the world as the book progressed was just brilliant. I loved that aspect of there being enough detail to make you ask creation questions and enough details to fill in certain blanks, but he never gave you everything. And I’m leery, as a writer, of exposition, you know what I mean? [laughs] Does the story provide the opportunity to show how the world works and to reveal more and more of it? That’s great. But the idea that idea of needing to turn around at any point and say “This is the way it works,” to me that’s boring. And sometimes I think it also risks really insulting your audience. And you know I’ve been in comics for fifteen years now and one of the things I’ve discovered is it’s a really smart audience, man. And two things that come from having such a smart audience: the first one is they know if you’re condescending in any way. And they also, I think they want to be engaged. They want that. We’ve talked about Saga as sort of our model for publishing? And I think Saga‘s also a great model for storytelling, you know? You get more the further you go, but the goal is always to make sure you have enough.

The Mary Sue: Is the fact that Forever was created as a female character… not as a female character, as a female sort of warrior/protector/sword of her family, is that more reflective of a sort of futuristic shift and more neutral thinking about which gender is more suited towards being playing a martial role in society? Or is it more of, maybe her father seeing her creator seeing… making her female would make her easier to manipulate.

I do think that… how to put it. The families are conservative by nature; there is a certain amount of sexism. There is a huge vanity in naming your child Forever, you know? [laughs] So Malcolm got what he ordered. He had a checklist. And there is very much a sense of, yeah, controlling her through that “Daddy’s little girl” thing. So it is, ironically, perhaps, among certain families that element of sexism is still extant and practiced, though it may be in many ways very much like our sexism today which tends to be a muted cultural one. Where down amongst the Waste, there’s really not, there’s no time for it. These are people who are desperately trying to survive. And desperately trying to find their way out of this horrible poverty they live in, and so issues of gender amongst the Waste are far less crucial. But yeah, there is, you know, an absolute… Forever is as she is by design, and that means she’s a woman by design. And actually once you get into the second arc, you see, and this is… trying to figure out how to phrase this because it’s just kind of spoilery. You see more evidence of how Malcolm manipulates his daughter and how long it’s been going on. And how that “Daddy’s little girl” relationship really factors into things. I think that’s the best answer I’ve got for you.

Moderator: Anything else you’d like to add, Greg?

Yeah, I actually do want to add that everything about this has been terrific. I am so excited about this book coming out. Image has been incredibly supportive. This is a whole new publishing experience for me, so top to bottom I am…

[laughs] Aside from one mistake that I caught in the first issue and it’s my fault… It’s the oxytocin/oxycontin one, and I saw it yesterday and I went “Oh god, nooo. I thought i corrected that!” [laughs] The way I’m looking at it is it gives us – now I know what I’m starting our second issue letter column with.

Look, I don’t like books that are polemics, and I don’t like reading something that feels like I’m being lectured to. We talk about the economic divide and things like that, but the fact of the matter is that this is an adventure story, this is a story about a woman, it’s about Forever Carlyle. Everything else is backdrop to that. And, you know, just the opportunity to do this story the way we want, how we want. Man, I love it, I’m so excited, and I’m so excited that we finally get to show people what we’ve been working on for so long. I really do hope folks will dig in, I really do. I think Michael has done some of the best work of his career on issue one certainly, and I’m just having a blast, so. That’s what I’ve got to offer.

Toddler Jaxson Denno cries when Robert Downey Jr turns up instead of Iron Man

by Alistair Potter
Robert Downey Jr consoles Jaxson Denno, a tearful toddler waiting to meet Iron Man
Oh dear: Robert Downey Jr looks less than pleased as Jaxson Denno sobs his little heart out (Picture: Splash)

A toddler was left in tears after he was told he was about to meet Iron Man – only to be greeted by the comparatively boring face of Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr.

Such was the disappointment for one-year-old Jaxson Denno when Downey Jr turned up instead of his cartoon hero that the little’un burst out crying.

And, in a picture that captured the moment superbly, the actor doesn’t exactly look delighted either.

‘Jaxson was confused because I was telling him he was meeting Iron Man, but he didn’t recognise him without the suit,’ the tot’s mum, Heather, explained.

‘Robert had already spent 10 minutes signing autographs on set and was about to start filming another scene when he spotted Jaxson and started waving at him.

‘He made time to come over and I was telling Jaxson, “Look, there’s Iron Man”.’

However, after casting his gaze around as Downey Jr approached and failing to spot the suit, little Jaxson couldn’t hide his disappointment when he was posed up next to a random middle-aged man instead of his hero.

Still, it wasn’t all bad news. Ms Denno added: ‘Robert was like a concerned dad, comforting Jaxson when he was crying. He stayed around to try to make him smile, despite being rushed back on set.

‘He’s a really, really great guy.’

Downey Jr was in the western Massachusetts towns of Sunderland and Shelburne Falls to shoot his new movie The Judge.

Not packing his Iron Man suit, though? That was just mean.

India has a population of over a billion and our ideas about the country are often informed by that statistic. Yet there are places on the sub-continent which are still almost inaccessible.

Meghalaya in the north east of the country is home to mountainous subtropical forests. In order to get around, local people have come up with an ingenious form of natural engineering - the living root bridge.

UC Berkeley Group Working On Creating Inexpensive 3-D Printer Materials

by Soulskill
phrackthat writes "A UC Berkeley group, in a bid to drive down the costs of 3-D printing, has been focusing on more natural materials such as salt, wood, ceramics and concrete (the last two, while not naturally occurring, are made of naturally occurring components). The use of these materials create new avenues for architecture, such as printing buildings. Professor Ronald Rael, the head of the project, stated that these materials and the designs they enable will require new IP protections — 'This is going to require some IP protection for designs, so if you design architecture in the computer, you're protected, just as music and movies are.' I wonder if he's ever heard of design patents?"

More Incredibly Mesmerizing GIFs by RRRRRRRROLL

by Pinar

Japanese art and photography collective RRRRRRRROLL first mesmerized us with their spinning gifs over 10 months ago and they've continued to create one hypnotizing animated image after another. Sharing about one to two images every week, the 5 creatives behind this eye-catching project have been skillfully conducting photo shoots of one woman exploring a world filled with rotations.

Whether the young woman in the ongoing series of gifs is spiraling in place or standing still amongst twirling objects, the project presents a beautiful image of isolated movement in each animated sequence. It uses both a calming color palette and serene atmospheres (indoors and outdoors) with a minimalist approach, making it especially inviting, visually. Be forewarned: a lot of time can escape you as you browse through the collective's portfolio. It's almost impossible not to surrender to the spiraling motion that beckons your unwavering gaze.

A selection of the artists' works will be on display at Action Gallery in Milan on May 25th and in Naples on May 30th.

Paper sculptor Justin Rowe makes action leap off the page

Book artist makes action leap off the page
Red the world over: The children’s fairytale pops up from the pages of a book (Picture: Matthew Lloyd/Justin Rowe)

It’s literature, but not as we usually see it, as books are carved up and folded to form landscapes, and characters are delicately cut out to pop up from the page.

Paper sculptor Justin Rowe’s artwork showing the tactile beauty of books is on display at the British Academy.

Twist in the tale: Sculptor Justin Rowe uses a scalpel and tweezers to create a house, forest and bird of prey (Picture: Matthew Lloyd/Justin Rowe)

He uses a simple scalpel with a rotating blade to create each piece.

‘This is charity shop junk that no-one else wants,’ said Mr Rowe, 41, a bookseller at the Cambridge University Press.

‘The tackier the better, as it makes them look antique to start with, and old books have great illustrations.’

The free exhibition, called Turning The Page, is part of the British Academy’s literature week which starts today.

Horoscope Honeys Part 1

by noreply@blogger.com (bpresing)
I've always wanted to do a pin-up calendar, it's probably the most classic vessel for the pin-up that I can think of. Well I've finally gotten my chance to make one with Gallery Nucleus called Horoscope Honeys. It'll be a 2014 calendar and there will also be an exhibition and release party on June 29th 2013 at Gallery Nucleus.

I thought I'd take you through the process from the very beginning this time. It was my wife's idea to do a horoscope themed calendar, which I thought was a great idea. Since horoscopes are basically personality profiles, I thought it would be great to imbue each pin-up with the personality of each sign and try to come up with a pin-up concept that represents that character instead of doing the typical thing of dressing her up in the superficial trappings of that sign. For instance, I didn't want to dress up Taurus with bull horns on her head or have Pisces riding a couple of giant fish. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I've just seen it done before.

So I started to do a bunch of research and made lists of personality traits, then started to do thumbnails to search for the concept of the piece. I usually had to try to boil it down to one over-arching trait that would make for a clear pin-up idea. For instance Cancer became "the nurturer" and Leo became "the center of attention".

Here are all of my original notes and sketches. In future posts I'll take you through further steps of completion.

The Brown Sisters: Four Women over Four Decades

by MessyNessy

This weekend, my boyfriend pulled out not one, not two but three grays he noticed glistening in the Spring evening light against my dark black hair. I’m still in my late twenties and so I spent the next twenty minutes feeling slightly betrayed, glass of rosé in hand, proclaiming that when I’m older, I’ve got to be one of those ladies with white hair that can still ride a bicycle. However one approaches it, the acceptance of ageing is a tough one. Coincidentally, this weekend, I also discovered the Brown Sisters

In 1975, American photographer, Nicholas Nixon took the above photograph of his wife Bebe and her three sisters, Heather, Mimi and Laurie, aged between 15 and 25 years old. The next year, he took another photograph and realised there was an opportunity to do something special. With their permission, he began to photograph them each year, standing in the same positions, over 36 years.

Let’s take a journey through the passage of time with these four women…

Boston Magazine's Inspiring Cover: Heart Made From Marathon Runners' Shoes

by alice

Though we've seen some touching art tributes come out after the tragic Boston bombings, this is one of the most inspiring. The May cover of Boston Magazine shows a heart created from the shoes of the Boston Marathon runners. Photographer Mitchell Feinberg took this sure to be iconic photo of actual shoes worn during the marathon assembled so that the negative space is in the shape of a heart.

As Boston Magazine editor John Wolfson states, "To me the cover is about two things: perseverance and unity. By itself, each shoe in the photograph is tiny, battered, and ordinary. Together, though, they create something beautiful, powerful, and inspirational. Remove just one shoe and you begin to diminish, in some small way, the overall effect. Collectively, they are the perfect symbol for Boston, and for our response to the bombings.

"This city is my home. I live in it because I choose to. My love for it is boundless and, at times, irrational. This staff is filled with people who feel the same way. Our home is hurting right now, and our hope, together, was to produce something that reflects the intensity of affection and pride that all of us here in the region feel for Boston."

Notice that the shoes are arranged by color with the red and pink ones in the middle. This was purposely done to give the feeling that the heart is "almost beating."

Inside of the heart is an equally powerful headline, "We Will Finish the Race." Read more of the behind-the-scenes story at Boston Magazine.

14-Year-Old Photographer's Amazingly Surreal Self Portraits

by Pinar

We're always big fans of up-and-coming teen photographers here on My Modern Met, but 14-year-old photographer Zev (aka fiddle oak) has got to be one of the youngest talents we've ever come across. The Natick, Massachusetts-based teen photographer's portfolio exhibits skills beyond his years.

Zev manages to present a variety of techniques in his collection of images that lean towards the surreal in his self-portraits, which also overlap with his ongoing Little Folk series. A common theme in these works is to play with size ratio. By shrinking himself down for his imaginative photos, Zev takes the viewer along on a magical journey of rediscovering the world around us where blades of grass stand at equal height, a leaf can be used as an umbrella, and an acorn makes a suitable seat. His self-portraits also show just how young he is, making it all the more astounding that he's capable of producing such quality pictures.

Gaining attention for his creative images matched by his youthful age, the adolescent photographer has already had the opportunity to collaborate with one of today's masters of surreal photography, Joel Robinson. Zev has proven to be one photographer to keep an eye on.

Surreal Hybrid Animal Sculptures by Ellen Jewett

by Pinar

Ontario-based Canadian sculptor Ellen Jewett, aka creaturesfromel, creates fantasy-driven biological forms that take the mind on a surreal journey. Each of her creatures exhibits an unconventional yet imaginative aesthetic that combines one's dreams and nightmares into an unusual figure.

There is both a mechanical and organic element to each sculptural representation that encourages one to imagine the magical land they come from. Like beasts in mid-transformation, there is a sense of motion to the sculptures that often feature multiple species in a single body. In fact, the hybrid creatures look like something straight out of a Miyazaki film.

Select sculptures from Jewett's vast collection are currently available to purchase through her Etsy shop.

The two-storey ‘ultimate bird house’ (Picture: PA)

This is the ultimate birdhouse, complete with infinity dipping pool, gym and en-tweet master bedroom.

The two-storey home, designed to attract more birds into the garden, was created by Swedish designer Clas Ohlson (he just had to be Swedish, didn’t he?).

Classy decor: The open-plan kitchen/living room and upstairs mezzanine bedroom (Picture: PA)

For added security, it is also fitted with a predator alarm and, with comfort in mind, there is a nice soft sofa and all the mod cons for the modern tit – like a bird feeder in a kitchen that comes with a sink and cupboard space.

Its chirpy residents can also relax in the garden – complete with wooden furniture. Although why you’d need a garden, and garden furniture, when your house is in the garden already is beyond us…

Licensing GET: Sentai plucks the Flowers of Evil

by Salvador G-Rodiles

Sentai continues on its path to become a powerful empire, and their conquest continues to overpower the anime shows that are currently airing as we speak. This time around, Sentai has ventured into corrupted soils to obtain the Flowers of Evil

Due to its artwork that deviates from the original manga's style, Flowers of Evil has caused a turmoil of rage among most viewers. On the other hand, I've heard that the anime's style does a great job in complementing the twisted nature of the series. As for myself, I haven't seen the series in action, so I will reserve my opinions for when I get the chance to watch the Flowers of Evil anime.

For more information on Sentai's license of Flowers of Evil, you an check out the press release in the section below. To those that are watching the series, is the series worth checking out, or should I read the original manga instead?

Portraits of Kids and Their Favorite Possessions, Across Cultures

by Emily Temple

What was your favorite toy as a child? In Gabriele Galimberti's wonderful series Toy Stories , which we recently spotted over at Feature Shoot, the Italian photographer traveled the world to photograph children with their most prized possessions, be they pink or blue, new or old, plentiful or scarce.

Decaying Food Porn
The Symmetry of Identical Twins
Inside the Dead Baby Unicorn Pop-Up Book

The resulting photo series is in turns haunting and funny, but Galimberti's reports from the field are equally interesting. "The richest children were more possessive. At the beginning, they wouldn't want me to touch their toys, and I would need more time before they would let me play with them," Galimberti says. "In poor countries, it was much easier. Even if they only had two or three toys, they didn't really care. In Africa, the kids would mostly play with their friends outside." Page through a few of our favorites from the series after the jump, and then be sure to head over to Galimberti's site to see many more.

5 Doughnuts We Love in Berlin, Germany

by Katherine Sacks

VIEW SLIDESHOW: 5 Doughnuts We Love in Berlin, Germany

Want to eat a Berliner in Berlin? Doughnuts may seem like an all-American treat, but you can easily find samples of Kennedy's infamous jelly doughnut in Germany's capital. Although the urban legend around his "Ich bin ein Berliner" story is actually false—Berlin residents do call themselves Berliners—the fried pastry has been traced back to indulging Germans since the 15th century. Today they are often enjoyed on New Year's Eve and during Carnival, where a common practical joke is to hide a mustard-filled doughnut in a mix of jelly delights.

Like many confusing things in Germany, the name for doughnut varies throughout the country; it's kreppel in Frankfurt, krapfen in the South, a Berliner in West Germany, and pfannkuchen in Berlin. All the names refer to the same pastry, sweet, yeasted dough, deep-fried and filled. The most traditional in Berlin is pflaume, sugar-dusted and plum jelly-filled, as well the glazed versions with marmalade. Some shops sell variations, including chocolate, lemon, or vanilla fillings, and French crullers are also quite popular here.

While you can find them at nearly every bäckerei, corner store, and train station, including an unfortunate proliferation of Dunkin' Donuts, we suggest skipping the tourist stands. Instead try these five family-run bakeries, a true step above the rest. Head out early to snatch up the freshest dough and get ready for the sugar coma to set in.
