Before & After: A Master Bath Gets a Bright Makeover in Austin, TX

by Lauren Chorpening

When Amanda and Corey Hendrix moved into their Austin, TX home six years ago, there were a lot of projects that needed to be done. Their 80s builder-grade home didn’t have enough character or beauty for the couple, and it lacked legal building codes for today’s standards. Thankfully, Amanda and Corey share the same love for hands-on home improvement and are always looking for the next room to upgrade and makeover. “The house had great bones but needed tons of work, and the floor plan felt unique to us and made the home feel a little more special than the typical builder-grade home. We loved that it was such a great blank slate for us to get creative with, and we immediately saw how much potential it had,” Amanda shares.

The bathroom was one of the first things they wanted to redo, but it took a few years to get started. “When it comes to the bathroom in particular, we knew from the moment that we saw it that it had an incredible amount of potential,” Amanda says. “It’s a huge master bathroom and the layout is really fantastic, but the entire room was brown, boring, and nothing special yet. We talked and planned for years before we actually got started on this room, and it was a whirlwind process once we actually started renovating!” A whirlwind is a great way to describe it. Amanda and Corey completed the project themselves in six weeks for One Room Challenge, an online blogging challenge to start and complete a full room makeover in a short amount of time. They learned to tile, applied a cedar planked ceiling, replaced the countertop, painted, designed and fabricated light fixtures and completely changed the look of the space while both working full-time outside of the home.

Amanda’s blog, Love and Renovations, has become successful enough to quit her day job and focus on the blog full-time. “The whole reason I started my blog in the first place is to show my readers that you don’t have to be a professional or have a ton of experience to renovate your home, and this bathroom is the absolute perfect example of that,” Amanda explains. “It’s flawed, we made a few mistakes along the way, and we were probably in way over our heads, but in the end, we accomplished something that we never thought we were capable of and ended up with a bathroom that still makes me pinch myself every day because I can barely believe it’s mine!” Amanda and Corey’s hard (and fast) work has paid off and they have a beautiful master retreat with a style that makes them feel at home. –Lauren
