Darkwood! It was fright at first sight when I saw the first trailer for your procedurally generated top-down horror shenanigans. There was crafting, barricading of doors, and even surreal and comically unnerving conversations with inanimate objects. The lighting effects created a suitable atmosphere and the darkness was filled with weirdness and tension rather than hordes of slobbering beasties. The game is currently creeping down the Indiegogo route but is more than $10,000 short of its $40,000 goal with only nine days to go-go. New alpha footage may help to win over the doubters.

Minecraft with zombies is, well, Minecraft, but it’s also pretty much what 7 Days To Die could be described as. It’s a take on the zombie survival theme that also attempts to deliver a world that is as malleable as Minecraft’s blocky elysium. You can dig, destroy, build, barricade, and all that good stuff, as well as doing the shotgun business against the hideous undead. It’s Minecraft and DayZ being entwined after some horrible accident in the laboratory of zombie genre-blending. The developers sum it up, as so many games seem to have been summed up lately, by saying: “is an open world, voxel-based, sandbox game blending the best elements of FPS, Survival Horror, RPG and Tower Defense style games.”

Don’t take my baseless hum of cynicism as a reason not to take a look at the trailer, however, because 7 Days To Die looks genuinely impressive, and I can’t see this not making a huge impact when it arrives.

There’s not a lot of structure to vanilla Minecraft’s multiplayer. You build, you admire, you take a giant isometric screenshot and admire some more, then you discover creative mode and TNT. Then you restart the server and promise to never do that again (unless you’re 2b2t, then you just keep on going). Then someone mentions mods, and you get lost looking for something to give the game scope. There’s nothing wrong with vanilla, but if you’re looking for a server that turns the world into a more interesting place to explore, and eventually claim bits of your own, take a look at the CivCraft server.
