Chris Roberts Explains Star Citizen’s Economy

by Jim Rossignol

Well, he explains what he intends to happen in Star Citizen‘s living economy, at least. Whether it will work quite like this, we shall have to wait and see. Basically: the economy actually works you’d expect, meaning that if a factory requires raw materials to produce stuff, then it produces a mission for that requirement. It’s a mission that either the player or AI could take, and then either fail or succeed, completing the mission, and fulfilling the need. But there’s a further layer: pirates stopping your supplies getting through? The game puts a request out some mercenaries. Again, for player or AI. Man. This game. Sounds golden.

Go take a look.

Manual transmission for gamers

by Mike Szczys

manual-transmission-for-gamers

If that stick shift just doesn’t feel right in your hand it’s time for a change. This hack puts a gaming joystick in the center console of your hoopty as a gear shifter.

[Ilias] used a joystick from about 1991 to replace the stock shifter. It jogs our memory when he mentions that this thing saw a lot of use playing X-wing vs. Tie Fighter. Boy did we burn up a ton of time playing that one too! He actually broke the stock part getting it off (find a shop manual for your car if you’re afraid of this). But once the grip was removed he was relieved to find the joystick fit perfectly. The two molded plastic halves of the joystick screw together. To join them with the shifting level he used epoxy putty.

The momentary push switch for that thumb button is still in there. But it doesn’t look like he hooked it up to anything. If we were to give this one a try we’d have to find some use for it. Got any suggestions? Let us know in the comments.

Blizzard Testing Real Money Shop For World Of Warcraft

by Nathan Grayson

BUY ALL OF THE THINGS

I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say that MMOs are dying, but big traditional ones are certainly in a rough spot. Approximately seven-hundred quadrillion of them have responded by fishing a finger into free-to-play’s jangling pockets, but one titan’s managed to stick with subscriptions. I’m talking, of course, about World of Warcraft, ruler of the MMO realm since time immemorial (2004 was how many years ago? No seriously, I forgot). But things change, and even the most negligent of subscribers’ credit cards eventually expire. WoW can’t hold out forever, so Blizzard’s dabbling in the darkest gold-producing alchemy of them all: in-game microtransactions.

Awooga! FTL Boarded Garry’s Mod

by Craig Pearson

If gathering friends to play Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator is a bit cumbersome, and if you find FTL a bit lonely, then I’ve found the perfect game for you. Final Frontier is the result of a nasty transporter accident between the pair, where the Heisenberg compensators decoupled and they arrived on the SS GMOD screaming and inside out. The sick bay did its best, but all it could do is stabilise the life signs. To be honest, the gristly lump that was spat out looks pretty amazing.

The Outer Space Industry: Race To Mars

by Jim Rossignol

Ladies and gentlemen of manners don’t race anywhere. We take our time. However, if one were to race anywhere, then Mars would be a splendid destination. Race To Mars, then, gets our tentative nod of approval. Developers Intermarum explain that it is “a turn-based, realistic space company tycoon game,” which sounds rather handsome. Furthermore: “Our game aims at achieving two goals: promoting the outer space industry and satisfying all fans of economy games.”

Quite commendable! But can it make it through the Kickstarter? More details below.

DIY time slice/bullet time rig with a ceiling fan and GoPro

by adafruit

DIY time slice/bullet time rig with a ceiling fan and GoPro via EMSL.

I’ve always been fascinated by the time slice technique (also known as “bullet time”). Probably the most famous version of this comes from a scene in the first Matrix film where Neo dodges a series of bullets. To capture this look the filmmakers set up an array of cameras that fired off at high speeds in sequence. After a lot of work interpolating frames (creating frames between frames) using an in-house software program (now known as Twixtor), they were able to achieve  the final effect.

Conroy’s Legacy: The NBN Is A Permanent Idea

by Angus Kidman
In the wake of Kevin Rudd’s return to leading the Labor Party, communications minister Senator Stephen Conroy has resigned from the front bench. We’re going to see endless speculation on what this means for the National Broadband Network (NBN), adding to the existing speculation about whether the alternative Coalition plan is feasible. From a technology user perspective, the key thing to remember is this: we no longer live in a landscape where cancelling the NBN is a probable outcome, and that’s something to be grateful for. Is The Australian Video Game Classification System Still Broken?

by Chris Jager
Last night, the Australian Classification Board gave the video game Saints Row IV an NC rating, which means it cannot be legally sold in this country. This is despite the fact that video games now have an R18+ classification in Australia. So is Saints Row IV — a tongue-in-cheek action game — really worse than torture porn movies like Hostel and Saw? Or is the Classification Board still backwards when it comes to classifying games?
