Earlier this year, we saw a Metro presentation that proposed changing the names of Metro's existing and under construction rail lines to letters instead of a potpourri of colors (Gold, Blue, Green) and street names (Expo, Crenshaw). Taking that idea and plugging in other available information (like the map Metro released for the twenty-fifth anniversary of Metro rail showing the future of the system), transportation planner Steve Borland created this unofficial fantasy (but likely an eventual reality) map on his blog, Calurbanist, showing what LA's future rail lines will look like once construction and renaming are both complete.

The map only goes up to 2024, so it doesn't show the Constellation/Avenue of the Stars station or the two before it along the Purple Line extension—they're scheduled to be complete in 2026. But it does show so much other good stuff, like the Crenshaw Line's link to LAX and the first part of the Purple Line extension that runs from Western to La Cienega. It's probably going to take some practice to start calling things by their new names once the change is made, so this is a good chance to get started. Last we heard, all Metro was waiting for was a plan on how to make the transition smoothly.

Earlier this week, Collider revealed rumored character descriptions and names for the upcoming Power Rangers movie.

Collider, a website under COMPLEX, posted unconfirmed early character descriptions of the upcoming 2017 Power Rangers movie. It is speculated that the upcoming movie will be going for a more “mature” take on the characters.

• Jason is a football star who damaged his knee in a car accident. In the beginning of the movie he feels lost and by the end he will be the leader of a group of teens in the search to find their true selves.
• Kimberly is a former popular girl who had an unexplained absence from school for six months. With rumors circulating as to why, she becomes a “rebel-without-a-cause” type of girl with deep secret.
• Trini is the perpetual new girl. Her parents move constantly forcing her to be a self sufficient, and observant girl. She is really looking for her own group of friends but will not admit it to herself.
• Billy is an intelligent and socially awkward kid who has trouble dealing with his OCD and understanding sarcasm. He has never really had any friends and ends up gravitating towards Jason.
• Zack is the “cool” kid. He is a star athlete who never lacks any confidence in himself and makes everything about himself open, except for one thing. He keeps the fact that he lives in a trailer park with his mother a secret because he is deeply ashamed of their poverty.

The new Power Rangers movie from Lionsgate and Saban Entertainment will be in theaters January 13th 2017.

Okay, no laughing allowed. I had a Sailor Moon themed wedding.

But perhaps not the rainbow colored, anime-poster ridden melee of sad artistic choices that you are expecting. Since my groom and I  are fairly fashionable adults with an pretty serious otaku problem, we finally landed on the perfect mash up of classy and nerdy for our big day: We had an art deco Sailor Moon-inspired wedding.

The plan was to have an elegant, grown up wedding, with a highly stylized injection of Sailor Moon design into every nook and cranny! Utilizing the extensive archive of beautiful Sailor Moon imagery, such as the lockets, wands, and symbols from the manga and anime, as well as the influence of Art Deco moon and stars designs, pulling together the decor, graphics, and fashion into an elegant nerd wedding was an event planner’s dream! As a professional event producer for Bubble Punch, as well as working in a hotel for most of my college years (100+ wedding receptions and lived to tell the tale!), I had extensive wedding planning and decorating experience under my belt, and was confident I would be able to do something unique, yet totally otaku-driven, to suit our tastes. Keep in mind, despite all of this, it was STILL SUPER DUPER STRESSFUL since it was my own wedding, haha! But here I am, mind in tact, and ready to tell you all about it!

I just wanted to hop on my soapbox quickly and tell everyone that YOU ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY KIND OF WEDDING YOU WANT. I think a lot of readers have been amazed that my groom “allowed” me to do this, but the fact is that we were both equally excited about the theme, the nerdy music, and decorations, because it spoke to our common interests. So don’t be afraid to flaunt your nerdy side in public, and especially not at your wedding! It’s your day! DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! WOO!

Below is a summary in photos of the wedding, then after that is a breakdown of Fashion, Graphics, and Decor notes and DIY links for everything! THIS POST IS LONG, BUT HANG IN THERE, IT’S TOTES WORTH IT. Thank you so, so much to Shannon Cottrell for all of the amazing photos!

THE WEDDING!

On December 6, 2014 at 5:30AM, I rolled myself out of the giant bed in the honeymoon suite we got in the Millenium Biltmore in Downtown LA. I slept for about 2 hours. My maid of honor Yume Ninja told me the suite was haunted so that’s why we couldn’t sleep. Goddamned ghosts.

I clipped in all of my hair extensions and just started braiding and pushing my hair around until I got it where I wanted it. No, I did not do a hair “trial” by myself haha. I just winged it, and it was pretty good IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF! The other bridesmaids arrived as well as the awesome Tess (@TESSXMONEY on Instagram y’all! Hire her! She’s in NY!) came to do makeup. I ate a sausage egg McMuffin and sat down for makeup like a goddamn lady.

The Sailor Scout Bridesmaid’s wands

Bride’s Bunny Shoes! In Japanese folklore, there are rabbits pounding mochi on the moon, plus they’re my favorite animal (duh, my username is iamchubbybunny!) so there were a ton of rabbits strewn throughout the wedding!

Our rings. The diamond shaped one is my engagement ring, which belonged to Will’s great grandmother from the 1900s. We designed our rings to have the same leaf pattern, and for mine to be “moon tiara” shaped, with a moon etched into the center of it and set with diamonds.

Hand made boutineers! Found metal filigree moons on etsy and added gold leaves, dried baby’s breath, and a few crystals.

Then we walked 1 block over to the Oviatt Penthouse, a wonderful 1920s historical landmark located on the rooftop of the Oviatt Building (There’s some history about it here!), where our ceremony and wedding were being held. The space boasts a living room, bedroom, dining room, huge outdoor space for ceremony and reception, and and a 3rd level terrace lounge near a clocktower! It’s like a million venues in one!

And then the decorating began!

Tuxedo Mask’s hair was painted to match the groom. I made the topper with some posterboard, confetti stars, and a plastic moon that I spraypainted gold! The figures are Puchi Charaones here :)

Ceremony arch

I sewed together paper moons and stars into long garlands to place behind the arch. Really happy with how they turned out!

DIY Photobooth props!

Custom rainbow foil beverage napkins, and DIY ribbon MOON wands for guests to wave at end of the ceremony (tutorial at the bottom!).

Our signature drinks for the night were the Copper Moon, with bourbon, ginger ale, and angostura bitters, and the Starlight Princess, with rosé champagne, berries, and elder flower liqueur.

Guestbook and Bride & Groom grass bunnies I decorated! The veil on the bride bunny is actually a remnant from my own veil! I also added a little moon to the front of the bunny’s veil to emulate my own tiara :)

We were worried about the rooftop being chilly at night… but it wasn’t an issue at all! Regardless, I think this was a great last minute idea we had to help those who were chilly at our reception.

CEREMONY

We were very proud of our music choices, nerdy as they were!
Processional: Fragments of Memories, “Potions” orchestral version, from Final Fantasy 8 (theme from the town Winhill)
Bridal March: Otome no Policy (乙女のポリシー ; “A Maiden’s Policy“) , Piano Fantasia version, the Sailor Moon R ending theme song.
Recessional: Sakura Kiss, Strings version, opening theme song to Ouran High School Host Club, anime version. (I always get chills when I listen to this song! So pretty!)

The only “cosplay” at our wedding were our sweet “star” girls, dressed in Serenity dresses my mother made for my nieces. They threw paper stars and moons instead of flower petals.

And our ring bearer, the groom’s nephew, wore Tuxedo Mask’s medallion and snuck the mask into his front pocket, hehe.

We cut and pre-made the side runners of stars before the event! Loved how they came out!

The ceremony was really sweet… definitely cried a lot, haha. We had our wonderful friend and groomsman, Glenn be our officiant for our wedding <3

And yay, it’s over!

Our photobooth was expertly done by Snap Yourself! with the moon being hand made by my talented friend Kate Walsh! I cannot stress enough how important it is to have professional, reliable  photographers run your photobooth! These photos were definitely a huge hit and such a fun way for guests to play during the cocktail hour!

RECEPTION

Each dinner table was named after a planet, with the corresponding planet/senshi symbol. The centerpieces were a large Silver Imperium Crystal made of glass, and lit from underneath.

We really loved the music of Guardians of the Galaxy (who doesn’t?) so our Grand Entrance was to the tune of “Hooked on a Feeling“, and Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back“, so of course our first dance was to… Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love.” Our father/bride and mother/groom dance was Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon.

The adorable Mr & Mrs chair decoratoins! I made the frames, and my husband wrote the words in calligraphy, while my friend Sheyne created the pretty garland.

Lovely speeches by our friends! The venue had a large projector screen that we kept a running slideshow on throughout the night.

Our cake was a simple white cake with butter cream frosting, which our too-kind guests raved about for days after.

Instead of a regular bouquet and garter toss, we opted to throw plush bunnies I had made! It was a hoot, and I’m really glad we found an alternative for the awkward garter toss, too! And of course, I couldn’t throw my Moon Rod at someone either, haha.

FASHION

BRIDE

For myself, I undertook the craziest plan of all: making my own wedding dress. It is supposedly bad luck to make your own wedding dress, but I did TRY to go out and look at ready made ones… and the only things I really liked were about $30,000 (HAHA WHAT). So, instead of throwing away my entire wedding budget on that, I decided, foolishly, to make my own of my own design. Keep in mind, I am NOT a NOVICE seamstress.. I’ve made quite a few complicated costumes and gowns for the various balls and conventions I attend regularly, so I thought this would be easy. But I ALSO thought…. well… it should be SO SO SPECIAL and MORE COMPLICATED THAN ANYTHING I HAVE DONE BEFORE and use MATERIALS that I have also never used before, and oh, use techniques I have NEVER USED on anything I’ve made before either. ALL of these things I overlooked were what really bit me in the butt later, haha! I WAS A FOOL! If you are making your own wedding dress STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW but use nicer fabrics or something! You see, I had never EMBROIDERED anything (by hand nor digitally) nor hand sequined anything before. Ever. So of course I made it INTEGRAL to the entire design of the dress. Through many mess ups, and tears, the unending support and manual labor of one of my bridesmaids Aimee, and the MANY HANDS of my friends who came over to sequin over a 3 month long period, I was able to complete the most impossible feat: MY WEDDING DRESS. The entire thing took about 4 weekends or so of planning and patterning and altering, endless trips to the fashion district to search for the right fabric and sequins, 3 SOLID months of hand sewing sequins and beads, and endless hours sewing the entire thing together. So, about off and on for a year. A YEAR!

BODICE

Based off some inspiration photos I gave Aimee, she hand drew some design ideas for my bodice overlay embroidery. I then scanned the drawings, and made vectors of them in illustrator, adding a few edits here and there. After, I sent it off to our talented friend A.J., who made it into a program that a digital embroidery machine could create. THEN once that was done, Aimee had the annoying task of setting giant hoops into her machine and attempting to get the machine to embroider the design without it getting crooked with each reset, or when a thread would break. That part was the most grueling and THANK YOU SO MUCH AIMEE for doing that ;.; It took a few weeks and a few tears to get the embroidery the correct size and all straightened out. Once it was sewn together onto the bodice, it was time for the fun part of adding beads, sequins, and rhinestones to add a little sparkle and also to hide some of the embroidery mistakes and, uh, BLOOD FROM OUR HANDS from pricking them over and over again when dealing with all the beading and sewing haha.

BODICE BACK

The back was centered around the Crescent Moon rod, with two small Moon compacts on either side (which is why they have red, green, blue, and yellow stones in them).

One of these sequins is hiding a spot of blood. CAN YOU GUESS WHICH ONE? haha.

BODICE FRONT

In the front especially, I made sure to add some pink beads so that the top and skirt wouldn’t look totally mismatched together. In the end it didn’t really end up mattering but it made me MENTALLY happy and satisfied, haha. I’d also like to briefly state for the record that I had to install the goddamn zipper in this dress no less than THREE TIMES because it kept breaking. There is a lot of drops of blood in the zipper seam IS ALL THAT I’M SAYING, haha!

SKIRT

I loosely based the design of my skirt off of the Dior Venus dress, but gathered the petals at the top rather than have them be tapered as tear drops. I used leaf sequins and a combination of opaque and translucent french cup sequins. I also added silver moon and star sequins to the petals as part of the Sailor Moon theme. Let me tell you, it was a BITCH to sew these on using invisible thread by hand. Each petal took ages, and sometimes the thread would just catch on random things and you wouldn’t notice until you were well on the other side of the petal so you’d have to go back and tie off everything OR just UNSEW an entire section. IT WAS A PAIN! It looked gorgeous but… my god, at what price, my sanity?? haha. But, I kid. I love how it came out, although I definitely had a few nervous moments of “Oh lord, what if I hate it? I HATE IT I HATE IT! Wait… I LOVE IT AGAIN!” And that is because, dear readers,  no matter what, a bride will be stressed out about her wedding dress whether she buys it from a store, makes it herself, or finds it in a garbage can. Deep thoughts.

TRAIN

This whole shebang tucked up under the skirt for the reception. The moon measures about 15 inches across and has over 200 star sequins sewn into it. This one petal took me 3 straight days of sewing for about 9 hours each because it was so large and intense. I watched A LOT OF 30 ROCK during these trying times.

MOON ROD

Why carry flowers that will wilt and die, when you can carry a MOON ROD down the aisle like a true Princess of the Moon??? I had a lot of different ideas for what to take down the aisle, but eventually, this oversized version of the Cutie Moon Rod won out. I can’t stress enough how grateful and happy I am that my wonderful friend Grant Imahara volunteered to make this crazy beast for me as a wedding present. I don’t know how I can ever repay him and also Jenny of Uniqorne, who helped with the finishing an creating the base. Perhaps by giving them my first born. Or taking care of their cat, I dunno. I LOVE YOU DUDES!

BRIDAL JEWELRY

I spent a lot of time trying to find jewelry that I really liked, and nothing really seemed right. I ended up searching around in notions stores around the fabric district in downtown LA, and scouring Etsy for vintage items that I could reassemble into something that fit my vision.

I ended up finding these wonderful moons in different sizes that I combined and added pearls and rhinestones to to make a bracelet. I’ll have you know the name of the Swarovski crystals that I chose was ” Moonlight Crystal.” I felt it was fate. A dumb, otaku, nerdy, gleeful fate.

I had leftover stars from the bridesmaid’s circlets so I made another small art deco-inspired bracelet.

I found this antique necklace on Etsy, and took apart the middle stone section and replaced it with one of my moons then added a few crystals and a pearl to make it match.

For my bridal tiara, I found 2 great bronze art nouveau looking stampings, bent them, added crystals and pearls, and glued them all to a gold metal headband using E6000 glue and clamps. Then I attached a metal comb to the back using jewelry wire, and voila! Made for under $8!

My earrings were the one thing I bought outright, from a seller on eBay! I had a lot going on with my other jewelry, so I thought it best that my earrings be small and understated… but still in theme!

VEIL
I bought a ready-made one layered veil from a discount store, but found it was too long for what I wanted. I removed it from the comb, chopped the length off from the top (so the tapering off of sequins would still be visible at the bottom) so it would be waist-length and wouldn’t catch on all the sequins on my wedding dress skirt! I wanted to incorporate the color of the skirt a little in the veil, so I dip dyed the bottom of the veil in Petal Pink RIT dye….. and then it was too dark so I had to soak it in bleach to dilute the pink more…. BUT!!!  Teen I had to re-hem the whole thing by hand (FIVE. GODDAMN. HOURS.) since the thread there was too bright pink for my liking. A bunch of pearls and rhinestones had fallen off during the dye bath process so I also had to use fabric glue to put more of those, and then add some stars as well. IT TOOK KIND OF A LONG TIME for something that was supposed to be a quick purchase, but that’s what I do: make everything way more complicated than it has to be, haha! MY CURSE!!!

NAILS
Yes, I even had Sailor Moon inspired deco nails done! The wonderful Marie at Nails by Marie in Torrance, CA did these awesome Moon Bling Princess nails and I couldn’t be happier! If you’re in town, I really recommend her!

BRIDESMAIDS

For the bridesmaids, who were my Sailor Scouts, instead of using cheesy cartoon rainbow colors, I really wanted them to be dressed elegantly in the art deco theme with small Sailor-themed items. I picked a flattering floor length grey chiffon dress that suited all of the different body types of my bridesmaids. We then all handmade 20’s inspired capes made of shimmery sheer silver fabric, which evoked a sort of “Princesses of the Moon” feeling <3 LOOK T THESE BEAUTIFUL, HELPFUL, LOVING FRIENDS I HAVE!

I then hand made them art deco inspired star circlets, with their senshi colors in the center with swarovski crystals. I also made them a set of earrings with their planetary symbol and a crystal heart.

My Maid of Honor once again stepped up, and upon my request, made all of the bridesmaids over sized Sailor wands (the Sailor Stars versions were the best, right???) to carry down the aisle instead of bouquets! They turned out WONDERFUL! She used an existing plastic rod for the handle, a star ornament for the top, clay for the “crown” connecting the two, and foam for the symbols.

My awesome friends Selina of Lunar Descent also handmade all of us matching Senshi symbol brooches for the girls to wear on their capes! THEY EVEN LIT UP, GUYS.

GRAPHICS

A major part of our design plan was having strong art deco influenced graphics, that integrated Sailor Moon imagery. My amazing friend, business partner, and Maid of Honor Yume Ninja created everything with some minor coaching from me involving inspiration boards and crappy hand drawings. Every single sign you saw in the above photos was designed by her! SHE’S AMAZING and well, you can hire her (yume@yumeninja.com) to do your graphics package, too!

INVITATIONS

We were very confident we could use an electric cutter to QUICKLY and EASILY do the die cut we wanted on each invite. Well.. WE ARE FOOLS, because nothing in this world is easy. It took about 3 separate days or experimenting and cutting to get the damn thing to cut on the lines, and then to actually CUT all the way through the paper. I think we had something like 50 duds? I do not recommend DIYing this part of your wedding. I thought I was going to lose my mind. BUT we did successfully create very cute invites, with nice graphics, and SOME die cutting that was not 100% precise regardless! TAKE THAT, SILHOUETTE DIGITAL CUTTER FROM HELL!

We even had a Japanese translated version of the invites made up for the guests that I invited from Japan :) Thank you Risa for your help with formal Japanese.. ughhh it kills me every time haha.

LOGO
Yume created this amazing logo image, utilizng aspect of art deco design from the invites, as well as the Sailor Moon brooches / compacts and tons of stars and hearts. We used this everywhere we could, such as the gobo for our dance floor and on our wedding favor tote bags.

Pro Tip: If you want a gobo with a very complicated design cut in, you will NEED to have it made of GLASS and NOT metal. It’s significantly more expensive then just a tin cut out gobo, but with much more glorious results!

OTHER DECOR

Our toasting glasses were Vera Wang Wedgewood. It was sort of a little splash out we allowed ourselves for once, since we own zero nice glassware in our home. But we still bought them from Amazon.com like the lazy folk we are haha.

For our welcome toast, we had these awesome edible glitter stars put into every champagne glass. When the waiters went around to pour, the stars rose to the top and stuck around the edges of the glass!

For cheap cocktail stirrers, I bought a box of coffee stirrer sticks for under $2 and hot glued puffy stars to the top!

For all of the cute frames I used for my wedding, I purchased cheap plastic frames from the dollar store, and glued charms and pearls to them before spray painting them all gold! It took about one day to do them all, but it was so worth it!

For the ribbon wands, I was really lucky that I found plastic hollow handles that we filled with stars and glitter, then sanded down the top to glue a plastic moon to. We then hot glued the ribbons to the top.

Just real quick, I’d like to stress to anyone else planning their geek wedding soon: PICK YOUR BATTLES! Despite how it looks, I let go of a lot of DIY projects that I just didn’t have time or mind energy for (custom dip dye ombre tablecloths…. LOL WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME??), and once the day started, I was just happy to be there, surrounded by all of my amazing friends (and thanking god I made excellent day-of decor checklists and schedules for my friends to go through instead of me!). Thanks to everyone who helped, shed a tear for me, bled for me, and was a great human being throughout the process. Without my friends and family’s support and presence, this would have been just nerdy party ;) I LOVE YOU, GUYS!

This is IAMCHUBBYBUNNY, signing out… IN THE NAME OF THE MOOOOON!

Well, not as my main phone.  For now, that's a Nokia Lumia 925.  However, my Nokia 808 Pureview is still raking up mileage.

Obviously, the camera is still its main use.  Most of the photos and videos on this blog were shot with it.  I found the Lumia 1020 too much of a lateral move from the 808 to purchase it.  Looking forward to the 1020 successor.

I prefer to use twitter on my 808.  Gravity is (thankfully) still being updated and I find it the easiest way to browse my multiple accounts and lists.  Windows Phone still has no app that can match its ease of use, speed and features.

The 808 is still amazing when it comes to GPS.  I drove for an hour yesterday with no cable plugged in and my battery was only down to 75% .  If I use my Lumia 925, the battery would have drained in 30 minutes.  Even plugged in with my old 1amp car charger, it still ends up dead after 3 hours.  Never had a problem with the 4-5 hour drive to Vegas with my 808.

GPS on Symbian works great.  Route commands come through the phone's speaker.  This is great on the 808, since the speaker is quite loud.  Route commands will only use the car stereo if I am connected in BT Audio mode and have music streaming from the phone.

Car navigation on Windows Phone sucks in my car.  It connects over bluetooth to my car stereo very strangely.  Route commands break the audio and use my car stereo's BT Phone mode.  This means the audio quality takes a major nosedive.  It is a really jarring experience because route instructions are delayed about 2 seconds.  Half the time, the route instruction doesn't even play because of that delay.  Even connected in BT Audio with music streaming, the route instructions still come over BT Phone mode.  Maybe it's my car stereo's fault this experience sucks.

If I only have the 925 on me when driving, I shut down its bluetooth connection and just use the phone's speaker.  This isn't too bad.  I can use Cortana and get directions to where I want to go easier.  Cortana over my car's bluetooth can never hear me.

LAX has so many people constantly flowing through it that it's spending over a hundred million dollars just to mitigate traffic. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, there is the totally barren San Bernardino International Airport. It would be hard to imagine anyone getting lost in this converted Air Force base, though if anyone did, we wish them luck on trying to find an employee to ask for directions. The airport may not have any travelers or airline desk attendants, or even any flights scheduled to arrive on or depart from its runway, but it looks very cool as seen in these photos from KPCC's Audio Vision. The international terminal (completed about a month ago) and its domestic terminal (finished three years ago) are both in pristine condition because they've never been used; while the executive director says "We've seen some real interest" and had nice long talks with nine airlines, but none have actually signed up to use the airport yet. "It immediately reminded me of 'The Langoliers,' a novel by Stephen King that takes place inside an empty airport trapped in a 'time rip' where there are no humans," says the author/photographer. And a Stephen King book is probably about the last thing you want to be reminded of right before getting on an airplane.

Black Friday

T-Mobile was offering no money down on the iPhone 5s.  No activation fee as well.  My bank was offering $50 cash back if I open an account with T-Mobile.  Win-win, right?  I was long out of contract with at&t, so I decided to take up the offer.

I went to www.tmobile.com and tried to place an order.  I qualified to get a Nokia Lumia 925 and iPhone 5s for no money down.  I almost finished check out when I got to an error screen saying something like "oops your cart is empty".  I tried again and again and kept getting the same error.  By the end of the day, I finally finished an order, except this time it said I would have to pay $500 down.

WHAT

I just realized all those attempts to order phones were credit inquiries.  My credit was fucked now.  I called back on Sunday around 7:30PM.  They told me they would fix those orders and open a new account for me.  I got far enough for them to take my credit card number and read off all the terms and conditions.  I was put on hold.  At 8PM, I was hung up on.  WTF.  I called back and got a message to call back during business hours.

I called back on Monday afternoon.  After 45 minutes on hold, I get an operator.  She says all those orders are still there and she would close them.  An hour passes because it's Black Friday weekend and their system is under a lot of stress and acting slow.  I still got the offer for $0 down, but I would have to pay sales tax.  Sounded good to me.  Finally after 3 hours on the phone my order is placed.  I printed out the confirmation and waited for my phones to arrive.

They're not done fucking with me

It's Wednesday and I get a call saying my order didn't go through.  They told me I have to go to a T-Mobile store to clear things up.  I get to the store and they tell me my order was cancelled 8 hours later after I had placed it on Monday.  The store representative says all those orders are still there.  He says he cancels them and tries to set me up with a new account.  However, he can't give me the Black Friday pricing.  That was the last straw.  I had enough and told him to cancel the order.  After all this bullshit, I walked out empty handed.  I'm not even sure those credit inquiries are gone.

Epilogue

I got back to my car and saw the meter expired.  Luckily I got no ticket.

Stereo Bluetooth headsets have always interested me. I’ve seen them evolve from gigantic sized headphones to the super tiny, discrete little BlackBeat Go that I reviewed last year. Apparently I wasnt the only one that liked the active wireless headphones, as there was enough reason for Plantronics to release the BackBeat Go 2 this year.

I thought last year’s model was pretty much the best wireless headphones for hardcore fitness folks. How could Plantronics possibly improve on them? Well, read on for what we think of the Plantronics BackBeat Go 2.

The Unboxing:-

We got the limited edition Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 which is red color and comes with a charging case in-box.

Here’s a quick unboxing to show you what’s in there:

The Design:-

The BackBeat Go 2 has a very compact, lightweight design, with two pronounced ear buds connected to each other with a single wire.

Initially you might worry about that wire getting all tangled up in your pocket, backpack or purse but thankfully they’re tangle-free so that it’s easy enough to grab and wear them. They’re incredibly compact for a pair of wireless headphones, so you can easily fit them into your pocket while coming off a commute, or coming home after a walk, etc.

Because these are targeted towards active individuals, the headset has a P2i military-grade nano-coating to ensure it has some moisture to make sure it can survive sweat during an intense workout, or a bit of rain outside. Dont expect it to survive a swim though.

Taking a look at the two ear-buds, it appears Plantronics stuffed all the required hardware into them, including the battery. Plantronics used 3rd generation 6mm speaker drivers inside the Backbeat Go 2, with enhanced bass, and memory that remembers upto 8 devices, so you can dont have a problem switching between your phone, tablet or computer, etc. The earbuds are comfortable enough that you wont really feel the weight of the headset during your workout.

They’ve also redesigned the silicone ear tips and stabilizers. As such, it very snugly fit my ears, even blocking out a fair bit of background noise as well. I wore them for 2 hours at a stretch, 30 minutes of which included a brisk walk. The BackBeat Go 2 never felt annoying at any point of that.

On the right earbud, you’ll notice a plastic flap, which has a microUSB charging port hidden underneath. Next to it, is a tiny LED light that blinks red or blue to indicate power or connectivity status.

Nearby, there’s the inline controller which includes a microphone and three tactile buttons. There’s a multi-function key to answer/decline a call or play/pause music. There’s also volume up/down keys that you can use to skip/rewind a track.

The Sound Quality:-

We tested the BackBeat Go 2 with an iPhone 5, and an LG G2, and I had no issues connecting it with either.

After over a month of using them, I’m very happy to report that the audio quality is great! Even at the loudest volume, the BackBeat Go2 didnt sound strained or distorted. What we have here, is robust audio that suits any genre, with a nice, subtle level of bass. It honestly is quite amazing how Plantronics managed to improve on the last model, and still keep it as petite.

The Call Quality:-

Unlike most other headsets in Plantronic’s line, the BackBeat Go 2 doesnt have any software features or voice controls as such. There’s voice prompts, and it tells you how much battery is left when you switch it on, but that’s about it.

In terms of call quality, the BackBeat Go 2 does an okay enough job. It’s not too great, but volume output is strong. Since there’s no noise-cancellation, the onboard microphone also picks up a lot of background sounds.

The Battery Life:-

The Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 lasts for about 4 hours of continuous usage (though it’s officially rated at 4.5 hours). If you work out for about an hour every day, you’ll want to charge it on the third day or risk it randomly running out of battery during your workout the next day.

Thankfully, the charging case comes in very handy there.

The Charging Case:-

The Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 is rated at 4.5 hours of listening time, 5 hours of talktime or 6 months of standby time thanks to it’s ‘DeepSleep’ hibernation mode. If you spring for the version that comes with the charging case (which costs $99.99 vs without the case which costs around $79.99), you can bump that listening time up to 14.5 hours. In India’s it a bit more expensive, at MRP Price Rs 4900.

The charging case is made out of a slick fabric, and can easily store the BackBeat Go 2 when you’re not using them. Even though it has an internal battery, the case is very compact, with a button on the front that switches it ‘on’ to charge the headphones via microUSB.

There’s a microUSB port onboard which you’ll need to use to charge the BackBeat Go 2. There’s also a bluetooth indicator and battery indicator LED as well.

The Conclusion:-

The only cons to the Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 are the battery life (Which is easily solvable if you spring up to get the charging case combo), and the call quality. On the other hand, it boasts great audio quality at this price range, it’s moisture resistant for workouts, and it’s super compact to carry around. At the end of the day, the Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 is a great pair of Bluetooth headphones for active users. Definitely recommended.

I watched this and tears of joy JUMPED out of my face. Watch the crowd encourage this toddler only if you like joy, heart-warming and adorable things. If you don’t, what are you even doing on the internet?

For most of you iPhone users out there: today there’s a huge update coming which has features inspired by Android, the late Palm OS, Windows Phone 7, and common sense.

If you’re anything like us, in the past, you regularly had your aspirations to be a mobile filmmaker crushed by shaky hands, bouncy rides and fast-moving targets. Then Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) technology arrived on the Nokia Lumia 920 and that all changed.

If you know me, you know by now I’m a car guy.  Not trucks, suv’s or anything else with 4 wheels.  Cars.  Cars that handle well and are fun get my blood pumping. Yesterday was just such a day.

If you were terrorized by a bunch of new Fiesta STs yesterday, it was me and I apologize.

Got a hot hatch of your own and want some fun? Take the route I took yesterday starting in Santa Monica into the hills and canyons above Malibu.  The route is just drop dead gorgeous with the Cornell Winery as a mid point in the route to stop for some libations and just catch your breath.  It will take you up PCH from SaMo to Malibu where you make an abrupt right up Malibu Canyon, across Mulholland and then down Decker Canyon to Leo Carillo State Beach.  About an hour for each leg if you follow the entire route.

What you get on the route is some really exciting hills and curves to test your driving ability.  I’ve done a similar route in the past and on non-school days you do need to have your wits about you are there are kids on skate boards running the canyon without regard to lane maintenance.  And bicycles.  All that is part of the territory I guess, weekdays are the best bet for canyon carving when traffic is light and the kids are in school.

I love Mulholland the best on the route.  Lots of good straight aways and sweeping curves with little traffic.  Malibu Canyon does have truck traffic which slows traffic way down and takes the fun out of a hot hatch.  Decker Canyon is my second favorite.  With little to no traffic on it you can row the gears and mash the gas/brake to your hearts content and see what your car is really capable of.  If you have a passenger, make sure they don’t get car sick or take dramamine first as the road is that twisty.  Seriously, in the group I was with we had one person at the drivers change point who had to get out and sit on the curb with their heads between their knees trying to ride it out.

If you love awesome scenery and a break from traffic I highly recommend this drive, even if you don’t have a hot hatch to appreciate it to its max.  (If you want to read about the car you can read about it HERE).

MANY MANY MANY Asian cultures have stories/legends about tribes from “the north” who have blonde hair and blue eyes (and no, they are not referring to Europeans). Some of the Asians who have these sorts of legends are Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Mongolians, and even MY people.

In the case of MY people, the genetic code for both RED and BLONDE hair is usually (not always) found in a specfic tribe.

My mother is part of that tribe. I have an uncle who has firey ginger hair, cousins on my mothers extended side who have natural blonde hair, and every so often someone on my mother’s side of the family has green eyes. It happens so infrequently, and 9/10 it is a FEMALE from my mother’s side. My mother’s tribe (Surname) to my knowledge, has the most cases of the colored eyes, and it is NOT often or common.

So please, before you make stupid assumptions like this, please fact check.

Yes, there are plenty of Asian women who like circle lenses and blonde hair, not because they want to be white. simply because it IS NOT COMMON in Asian ancestry. I don’t dye my hair rainbow colors because I want to be like Anime, I do it because I like COLORS.

NOT COMMON is not the same as “impossible”, because there are plenty of people from my culture alive today both in the first world and third world, who are full blooded asians, who have these characteristics.

Ah another over reaction caused by a misleading headline and preconceived notions about sex education. For those of you confused by what the law itself was recommending for “sex education” for kindergarteners. here are the main bullet points of what would have been covered.

• Each body part has a correct name and a specific function.

• A person’s genitals, reproductive organs, and genes determine whether the person is male or female.

• A boy/man has nipples, a penis, a scrotum, and testicles.

• A girl/woman has breasts, nipples, a vulva, a clitoris, a vagina, a uterus, and ovaries.

• Some sexual or reproductive organs, such as penises and vulvas, are external or on the outside of

the body while others, such as ovaries and testicles, are internal or inside the body.

• Both boys and girls have body parts that feel good when touched

• Bodies change as children grow older.

• Puberty is a time of physical and emotional change that happens as children become teenagers.

• People are able to have children only after they have reached puberty.

• Men and women have reproductive organs that enable them to have a child.

I think that most reasonable people would agree that these topics are age appropriate and reach students long before the current model of sex education before middle school…. their peers. Which is not a good model for educating kids on sex and relationships. These guidelines are by no means perfect but they are better than the current system, which is silence.

FIRST, like ALL American Education Systems for YOUNG PEOPLE RELATED TO SEX AND VIOLENCE:
#1 rule: parents must first sign a consent form. if they do not, the children are not present during this sex education.

IF THE PARENTS DO NOT CONSENT, THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT FORCE YOUR CHILD TO BE THERE. 

I think that a lot of people see “Sex Education” and they immediately assume that people are going to show PORN or something to kindergartners.

I think it is reasonable to educate our youth about their bodies and what relationships (especially an breakdown of manipulative and exploitative relationships) are.

Think the way the world is today, children are learning about sex from their peers or even other available resources (SUCH AS THE INTERNET) at such a fast rate, and a much younger age.

Pretending that children won’t understand sex until they’re in middle school is to deny that children are very resourceful and capable of discovering the information they want, when they want it. We should at least try to give them correct and valuable information.

By the time I was 7 I already knew what sex was. I am turning 32 at the end of September and MY PARENTS, to this day, HAVE STILL NEVER TALKED TO ME ABOUT SEX.

They pretend that I don’t have it, even though I live with my boyfriend and sleep in the same bed. And I am very aware that they probably know (but won’t admit) that I have known and had sex for at least 10 years… but they have left it up to the rest of the world to educate me about how babies are made. My mom, has never even talked to me about getting my period or going to the gynecologist.

So I think I’m one of the lucky people, who was educated about sex very early (at age 10) in the school system. I then was continuously educated in highschool (at school) and also in college (via my medical friends). I didn’t actually have sex until I was in my 20s, which was a conscious decision.

I think the scariest thing i have ever experienced, is when I was 27, I had a 19yr old coworker who asked me if it was ‘true’ that if a guy pulled out, she wouldn’t get pregnant….

so I have to say, yes, I believe in sex education. Because too many times in my life I have seen MANY young girls and guys who are inexperienced and not educated, get manipulated into sex or into having unprotected sex.

Earlier this year, Cartoon Network partnered with the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation for a public transportation advertising campaign called Cartoon Express. The campaign features a passenger train wrapped entirely, inside and out, in Cartoon Network character decals.

During its inaugural journey, the passengers, which included children from underprivileged backgrounds, received train announcements from the voice of Adventure Time’s Jake the Dog, played a CN-specific bingo game and mailed Cartoon Express postcards to loved ones via an on-board mailbox.

The Cartoon Express runs between the Taiwanese capitol of Taipei to the southern city of Kaohsiung and it is estimated that it will serve several hundred thousand passengers during the run of the campaign.
