The typical 'gamer' is not who you think

by davidswan@gmail.com (David Swan)
The typical 'gamer' is not who you think

Adult women represent a significantly greater portion of the video game-playing population than boys age 17 or younger, and nearly half of all video game players are women, according to new research released today.

The report, by US group the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), is titled 2013 Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry andfound that women comprise 31% of the video game-playing population, while boys 17 and under, the typical 'gamer' stereotype, represent only 19% of game players.

Women are 45% of the entire game playing population (including mobile games) and 46% of the time are the most frequent game purchasers.

{loadposition dswan}"This new data underscores the remarkable upward trajectory for video games. It is an entertainment form enjoyed by hundreds of millions of consumers worldwide," said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of ESA.

"A diverse and energized consumer base, remarkable new hardware, and outstanding software all combine to foster growth for our industry."

In addition to changing demographics, the report shows that parents are closely monitoring what their children are playing. According to Essential Facts, parents are present when games are purchased or rented 89% of the time, and children receive their parents' permission before purchasing or renting a game 80% of the time.

More than a third of parents report playing video games with their children at least once a week.

The 2013 Essential Facts, while US-skewed, provides statistics on industry demographics; the types of games played and game platforms used; how parents monitor and engage with their children around game play; the top-selling computer and video games; and overall sales information for the industry.

Notable findings include:

  • 58% of Americans play video games;
  • 51% of U.S. households own a dedicated game console, and those that do own an average of two;
  • The average game player is 30 years old, and 36% of game players – the largest age segment – are 36 or older;
  • 43% of game players believe that computer and video games give them the most value for their money, compared to DVDs, music or going out to the movies;
  • 62% of gamers play games with others, either in-person or online; and,
  • Consumers spent nearly $21 billion on game content, hardware, and accessories in 2012.

For more game-related coverage you can find reports on the current E3 gaming conference from Microsoft, Ubisoft, Sony, EA and Nintendo.

AMD unleashes world's first 5 GHz processor

by davidswan@gmail.com (David Swan)
AMD unleashes world's first 5 GHz processor

PC gamers now have something to smile about too, with AMD revealing its new 5GHZ monster for the PC 'master race' at E3 today.

Amidst talk of Xbox Ones and PS4s (probably more PS4s at the moment), PC gamers have good reason to feel a bit left out of proceedings.

Not anymore.

AMD today unveiled its most powerful member of the AMD FX family of CPUs, the world’s first commercially available 5 GHz CPU processor, the AMD FX-9590.

These 8-core CPUs deliver new levels of gaming and multimedia performance for desktop enthusiasts, according to the company, and the AMD FX-9000 Series CPUs will be available initially in PCs through system integrators.

“At E3 this week, AMD demonstrated why it is at the core of gaming,” said Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president and general manager, Client Products Division at AMD.

{loadposition dswan}“The new FX 5 GHz processor is an emphatic performance statement to the most demanding gamers seeking ultra-high resolution experiences including AMD Eyefinity technology. This is another proud innovation for AMD in delivering the world’s first commercially available 5 GHz processor.”

“AMD continues to push the envelope when it comes to desktop capabilities and power performance,” said Wallace Santos, CEO and founder of MAINGEAR.

“In unveiling the world’s first 5 GHz 8-core CPU, AMD continues to lead the way in innovation while providing our customers with a best-in-class experience. We are thrilled to be part of this exciting launch.”

The new 5 GHz FX-9590 and 4.7 GHz FX-9370 feature the “Piledriver” architecture, come pre-unlocked for easy overclocking, and feature AMD Turbo Core 3.0 technology to "dynamically optimise performance across CPU cores" and "enable maximum computing for the most intensive workloads."

AMD was the first company to break the 1 GHz barrier in May of 2000, and also introduced the industry's first APU (unifying CPU and Radeon graphics on the same chip).

The new AMD FX CPUs will be available from system integrators globally very soon, with two models tol be available:
FX-9590: Eight “Piledriver” cores, 5 GHz Max Turbo
FX-9370: Eight “Piledriver” cores, 4.7 GHz Max Turbo

TrafficPrivacy Launches Anonymous BitTorrent Client

by Ernesto

trprTo protect themselves against excessive monitoring, security exploits and ISP throttling, some BitTorrent users turn to anonymizing services such as VPNs and proxies.

Over the past months interest in these privacy protection services has surged. However, for some less technically skilled people all the talk about privacy settings and IP-leaks may prove to be too much.

The latter group is now catered for by TrafficPrivacy, a new and fully anonymous BitTorrent client that launched this week. Feature wise the client is relatively limited, but unlike others it has a fully configured and dummy proof anonymity option built in. Simply enter your login credentials and everything just works.

“TrafficPrivacy’s mission is to provide users with real 100% protection and anonymity without additional settings, which can be quite difficult for non tech savvy users. That’s why we include protection into a tiny BitTorrent client,” TrafficPrivacy’s Alex told TorrentFreak.

As with other anonymity services a long term subscription to TrafficPrivacy doesn’t come free. The service is currently priced at $6.95 per month, but there is a 7-day free trial available for people who want to give it a spin before committing to it longer term.

Contrary to VPNs or BitTorrent proxies, users will have to swap their current BitTorrent client for the TrafficPrivacy software. This is a deliberate choice from the makers, as it’s the only way to guarantee that all the privacy settings are properly configured.

With Vuze, uTorrent and other clients people often forget to use the right settings or get confused by the terminology, which can result in their true IP-address leaking out. The new client’s goal is to avoid this.

“The target audience for TrafficPrivacy are users who put a lot of value on their safety and anonymity, but do not want to configure all the complicated settings. We want to keep everything as simple as possible and let users feel safe without tinkering with various privacy options in current BitTorrent clients,” Alex says.

TrafficPrivacy BitTorrent Client

trafficprivacy

One thing to keep in mind is that TrafficPrivacy only offers anonymous BitTorrent transfers. Other traffic, such as that generated by a web browser, will be linked to the user’s regular IP-address. Users can see if anonymity is turned on directly from the client, but it’s always wise to verify it through an external service that checks the BitTorrent IP.

To guarantee the user’s privacy the company says it doesn’t keep any connection logs that can be traced back to individual customers. Also, if the TrafficPrivacy servers happen to go down the client will stop working entirely.

“If TrafficPrivacy server goes down, all downloads stop and it doesn’t leak the real IP-address,” Alex informs TorrentFreak.

The TrafficPrivacy team are no newcomers to the security scene. The new client was developed as part of the existing TorrentPrivacy proxy/VPN service, but when the new client was finished they decided to turn in into a completely new product and a brand of its own.

While TrafficPrivacy might not appeal to all BitTorrent users, its ease of use and simplicity will probably be welcomed by those who are less technically skilled.

Apple to trade in old iPhones for a shiny new one

by ray.shaw@mci-group.com (Ray Shaw)
Apple to trade in old iPhones for a shiny new one

Apple is reportedly readying a trade in program to get users of its older phones ‘off the market’ and locked into an iPhone 5 or the yet to be released 5S. It’s a great marketing strategy – something Apple do very well.

The big issue for Apple is that Samsung has, largely at Apples expense, captured 75% of the smartphone market in Q1 2013 and this trend shows no signs of abating. Apple has 17% market share - not nearly enough to sustain the Applesphere in the long term.

Apple must arrest the decline by locking in users to iOS and it can do so by at least two means – first the trade in scheme is a brilliant play and second the ability to reuse at no cost anything bought from iTunes - apps, games, music or movies on a new iPhone.

{loadposition ray}

It is expected that the trade in will be in the order of US$200 for an iPhone 4/4S – no figure was mentioned for the iPhone 3. It will be managed in the US by Brightstar which expects to process more than 15 million trades this year – plus what Apple brings to the table. Brightstar’s program offers instant trade in credit so a new phone can be purchased from any legitimate dealer without waiting for cash back.

Traded phones are refurbished and sold to emerging markets and that is a good corporate social responsibility play – it also does not cannibalise the premium end of the market. According to David Edmonston, CEO of eRecyclingCorp “If they can’t afford a new Mercedes then they will get a used one”.

From Apple's perspective its all about the ecosystem – more Apple users equates to more apps and games sold and everyone is happy. It cannot afford to lose the premier position to Google Play.

iTWIre is not able to confirm at this time whether the trade in system will come to Australia but Brightstar does operate here.

Sex workers, escorts banned from ‘networking’ on LinkedIn

by peter.dinham@itwire.com (Peter Dinham)
Sex workers, escorts banned from ‘networking’ on LinkedIn

Professional social networking company, LinkedIn has changed its terms of use policy aimed at ensuring sex workers and escort services can no longer advertise or promote their services to the 200-millon plus members of its global network.

A subtle change in wording of the terms of use means that members of the world’s oldest profession can’t advertiser or promote their offerings, even if sex services are legal in the country where they are being promoted, such as here in Australia.

LinkedIn’s previous user agreement prohibited users from taking part in “unlawful” activities which, of course, didn’t sufficiently cover countries like Australia where it is not unlawful to be a prostitute or an escort.

Now, however, LinkedIn has closed the loophole to stop advertising or promotion of sex services on its global network, regardless of whether those services are, in fact, lawful.

{loadposition peter}LinkedIn says its user agreement has always banned the promotion of escort or prostitution services but, now, it has made a change which makes it clear that its ban applies anywhere, even in countries where these services are legal.

The new user agreement says that you must not: "Create profiles or provide content that promotes escort services or prostitution even if prostitution is legal where you live.”

Of course, it would be interesting to see if a sex worker, or anyone else involved in the sex industry, in a country like Australia where prostitution is legal, decided to challenge LinkedIn’s ban on the basis of discrimination.

We suspect, however, that LinkedIn’s lawyers have that covered, too, after all there’s not much that hasn’t been tried in the way of litigation in the world’s largest consumer market for everything, including sex services.

Vin Diesel returns as ‘Riddick’ in badass new trailer

by Colin Joliat

Vin Diesel is more Diesel than ever in the new trailer for Riddick. It’s a return to the style that made the Pitch Black a cult hit.

Actors often talk about their “passion project.” Riddick is Vin Diesel’s. The only reason the movie was even made was because he pushed so hard for it. The studio wanted to continue with another PG13 mediocre followup like Chronicles of Riddick, which would have been terrible. Vin Diesel had a vision of what the end result needed to be, but it wasn’t what the studios wanted. Eventually he got his way, but at a price.

iOS 7 comes to life in new video

by davidswan@gmail.com (David Swan)
iOS 7 comes to life in new video

A new iOS 7 concept video demonstrates what Jony Ive’s rumoured vision of a flatter iOS 7 could bring to the table, and it's looking damn pretty.

iOS is a popular ecosystem with millions of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users, but the reality is that the operating system hasn't undergone a major transformation of any kind since its inception in 2007.

That's finally set to change in June, with the launch of iOS 7 at Apple's WWDC conference in San Francisco.

Lead designer and Steve Jobs 'kindred spirit at Apple' (Jobs' words) Jonny Ive has been effectively given carte blanche for the project, and rumours have led us expect a flatter version of iOS, with much sexier icons and overall a simpler design aesthetic.

{loadposition dswan}Digital agency SimplyZesty has listened to the rumours and designed a mockup iOS 7 of what they think could be pretty close indeed to Apple's new baby.

The group have included widgets, something Apple fans have been crying out for for a long time now, along with toggles for WiFi, Bluetooth and Airplane mode.

The new icons do look quite similar to those seen on Windows phone, and if true the new look would be a radical redesign for the Apple faithful to get their heads around.

Check it out for yourself below.

Expect a more definitive answer when WWDC rolls around between June 10 and 14.

Pirate Bay Takes Over Distribution of Censored 3D Printable Gun

by Ernesto
Quadbike

Dan THIS>>>>

3d-goneIn late 2012 the 3D blueprint website Thingiverse decided to ban 3D gun designs, citing their terms of service which clearly prohibit files used to make weapons.

Enter DEFCAD, a site dedicated to hosting designs that have been banned at Thingiverse. Namely, the entirely printable 3D gun design which clocked up more than 100,000 downloads within its first two days of release.

This did not sit well with the Department of State Office of Defense Trade Controls who kindly requested that DEFCAD remove the availability of the 3D printable gun documents, enthusiastically named “The Liberator,” citing a possible violation of International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

In the letter from the State Department, which can be read in full at Forbes, the Government explains that it wants to review whether the designs are in compliance with arms export control laws.

While the attempted censorship of the 3D gun blueprints may come as no surprise, the popularity of these files is a vivid example of the daunting task faced by those charged with censorship of information.

While DEFCAD promptly complied with the request to remove access to the design, it was shared so widely during the short window of availability that it is now virtually impossible to prevent any further distribution. Currently, there appears to be several torrents available for the design at The Pirate Bay and the site informs us that these will not be censored.

“TPB has for close to 10 years been operating without taking down one single torrent due to pressure from the outside. And it will never start doing that,” A Pirate Bay insider told TorrentFreak.

Guns on The Pirate Bay

defcad-tpb

The Pirate Bay is not out to promote guns, but they do have a great interest in 3D printing.

“We think the whole idea of a printable object is interesting. You can print guns for sure, but even better you can print plowshares and other things as well. The problem is not the object but what you do with it. Just as with a cooking knife.”

The torrent site also says it welcomes Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson to start publishing designs on The Pirate Bay. A year ago TPB launched a 3D print section where the blueprints would fit nicely.

“When Defcad is closed down there is still TPB. Cody is welcome to upload everything on Defcad to TPB as well, so the users can comment on the crap.”

“Cody Wilson’s site has been branded ‘A Pirate Bay for 3D objects’ which is kind of funny, since TPB has had its physibles section more than a year already, with lots of objects in there. And since the whole idea behind TPB is to not let outside pressure judge, TPB is prepared for things like that.”

The Pirate Bay insider welcomes a debate on gun laws and U.S. oppression of free speech. “We laugh at their gun love since it’s so obviously the wrong way to go.”

“We think that the good thing about the discussion about 3D printers and their gun laws might bring more focus on the double standards that the U.S. is having and hopefully – people will start printing signs to protest against the guns, the corruption and the threats against freedom of speech that the U.S. is pushing on us.”

For now the 3D gun links posted on The Pirate Bay are from unverified sources. Printing those might not be such a good idea, but it is clear that the original designs are not going away. All one needs in order to access these files is a hash, there is no longer a central source that can be shut down to prevent public access to these files.

This BitTorrent connection also gives the term Defense Distributed a whole new meaning.

The takedown of the blueprints could very well mark the beginning of an era where proponents of so-called cyber warfare begin using military resources in attempts to regulate a data distribution protocol which has, thus far, been impossible to regulate.

At the minimum, it’s the start of a crackdown on 3D blueprints, which will undoubtedly become more common as technology advances.

Ryan Smith contributed to the article.

World’s first 3D printed gun fired on video

by Chris Spags
Quadbike

Dan make me one of these

Printing in 3D is all the rage right now. So let’s step into the future and check out what’s believed to be the world’s first 3D printed gun firing off a round.

That’s a pretty cool invention, obviously. And kind of terrifying as to what the future could hold. Can there be 3D printed nuclear weapons? 3D printed sex robots? Will they all also make the same kind of pathetic “pew pew” sound that this 3D printed gun made when firing? The future is scary. (thanks for the tip, Josh)

Slowdown in IT jobs, but shortage of ICT managers

by peter.dinham@itwire.com (Peter Dinham)

The IT job market has slowed faster than most other sectors of the Australian economy during the past six months, creating an oversupply of 300 professionals, but a shortage of 100 ICT managers has also emerged.

The new Clarius Skills Indicator for the March quarter, released today by Candle, the IT recruitment arm of the Clarius Group, reveals that the IT jobs market is “in balance” with 216,000 IT and Communications  professionals and 47,000 ICT managers employed across various industry sectors.

According to the index, IT contracting activity has picked up since January but the permanent hire market remains slow, and is not expected to improve until later in the year when a limited number of private and public sector projects come online.

And, according to Linda Trevor, Executive General Manager of Candle, financial institutions and insurance companies in the private sector are generating most hiring activity.

{loadposition peter}“Small and medium businesses are also looking to bring their IT back in-house. We are seeing increased activity in that sector and some government projects coming online such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

“There is also increased activity in the Federal Government’s Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) work which assists government teams to source and screen talent for their long term recruitment needs.

“While the RPO work emanates from Canberra the need for skilled managers and professionals extends to where departments are located, primarily in Queensland, NSW and Victoria.”

Trevor says there continues to be an increased emphasis on productivity with a demand for IT job-seekers who have “multi-skilling capabilities encompassing business communications and technical skills.”

“IT staff who can combine the technical side of their work with the ability to effectively communicate with business clients are invaluable today particularly in the private sector but also with certain customer-focused government positions.

“Job-seekers, who have the skills to understand and communicate in business terms with clients, are at the head of the queue.  For example, a developer will also need to be able to speak to the client business about productivity, marketing and economic values of a project.”

In Sydney, Trevor says the survey shows that some companies were looking to put more local people into their businesses, “rather than import from overseas as they look to bring IT back in-house.”

On a state and territories basis, the Clarius Index reveals that in New South Wales, most demand for IT skills is for high level architects required for major projects within private and government sectors, while consulting services represent the strongest business sectors.

And, while the contracting side of the IT jobs market in NSW is moving slowly, it will not be until the first quarter of the next financial year that the permanent market will begin to rebound, according to the survey.

In Victoria, Clarius found that multi-skilling requirements have become increasingly more important to many employers, with IT clients looking for a mix of technical and soft skills, regardless of the industry and more often than not job type, and with psychometric testing playing an increasing role in selection of staff.

According to Clarius, clients in Victoria are still very tentative when recruiting, double and triple checking the candidates rather than taking a risk, while companies have remained cautious about spending money and bringing the right or wrong people into their workforce.

Digg working on a Google Reader replacement

by davidswan@gmail.com (David Swan)
Digg working on a Google Reader replacement

Once dead social startup Digg today announced plans for a Google Reader replacement, after conducting a massive user survey.

The software will see a June beta release but te company also said the final product might not be free, unlike Google's ubiquitous RSS software.

Following Google's announcement that it would be killing off Reader as of July 1, Digg said that it would take it upon itself to fill the gap with its own RSS service.

The company conducted multiple surveys on discovery and reading features, as well as "more ancillary features like read later and sharing."

The survey responses, available here, showed that 75% of the 8600 respondents share news via email, compared to 55% who share stories via Facebook or Twitter.

"It almost goes without saying that our reader will include seamless sharing to all these services," Digg said in a post on its official blog.

First 2013 solar eclipse set for May 10

by waarc@grics.net (William Atkins)
First 2013 solar eclipse set for May 10

The first solar eclipse for 2013 will occur on May 10, and will be visible from Australia, eastern Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and the Gilbert Islands.

In addition to this annular eclipse (which occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly lined up, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun; thus, the Sun appears as a very bright ring (a "Ring of Fire" as it is sometimes called), or annulus, surrounding the dark disk of the Moon), a partial eclipse will also be visible.

This partial eclipse will be visible in Australia, Indonesia, Oceania, and much of the central region of the Pacific Ocean.

The annular path of the May 10th solar eclipse begins in Western Australia near Collier Range National Park at 22:33 Universal Time (UT).

According to the NASA article Annular Solar Eclipse of May 10, “Traveling northeast, the shadow quickly sweeps across the Northern Territory where Tennent Creek experiences an annular phase of 3 minutes 4 seconds. Since the eclipse occurs here shortly after sunrise, the Sun is just 16 [degrees] above the horizon. On the central line 70 km [kilometers] to the north, annularity lasts 4 minutes 27 seconds at 22:37 UT.”

{loadposition william08}Then, NASA continues with, “The antumbral shadow crosses the Gulf of Carpentaria and reaches the Cape York Peninsula at 22:44 UT. As it does so, it crosses the track of the previous year's total solar eclipse (2012 November 13). Four minutes later, the shadow departs Australia at Lakefield National Park (22:48 UT).”

The NASA article adds, “The next landfall in the eclipse path occurs in eastern Papua New Guinea at 23:00 UT. The central line crosses Basilaki Island where annularity lasts 4 minutes 59 seconds with the Sun at an altitude of 39 [degrees].”

And NASA adds, “Traveling at 0.98 km/s [kilometers per second], the antumbra next reaches the Solomons where Choiseul, the largest island in the chain, lies at the center of the track. Annularity is now 5 minutes 16 seconds and the Sun is 49 [degrees] above the horizon (23:15 UT). This is the last major landfall in the path.”

For more information on this first solar eclipse of the 2013 year, please read the before-mentioned NASA article “Annular Solar Eclipse of May 10”, which is part of the NASA Eclipse Web Site.

The YouTube video “Annular Solar Eclipse Coming May 9 and 10, 2013” is shown above. It is provided by GabeHashTV and is found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du7gkl9l1mw.

Remember to wear protective eye wear whenever viewing a solar eclipse. Check out the Space.com article "How to Safely Observe Sunday's Solar Eclipse" (this article was publlished for an earlier solar eclipse) for more on the proper way to observe this solar eclipse, and all solar eclipses.

Bid on Some Shipwreck Whiskey

Bid on Some Shipwreck Whiskey
The SS Politician was an 8000-ton cargo ship owned by T & J Harrison of Liverpool. It left Liverpool on 3 February 1941, bound for Kingston, Jamaica and New Orleans with a cargo including 28,000 cases of whisky. The ship sank near the island of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, and much of the wreck's cargo was salvaged by the island's inhabitants. The story of the wreck and looting was the basis for the book and film Whisky Galore!

Microsoft Recommends Uninstalling Windows 7 Security Update 2823324

by Akemi Iwaya

While it does not happen often, every once in a while a security update to patch Windows causes more problems than it solves. Case in point, security update 2823324 that was a part of this month’s Patch Tuesday release for Windows 7. Some users have been experiencing endless rebooting or a failure of their system to restart after installing the update. To counteract the problem Microsoft has published a KB article to help get affected systems up and running again.

As a first preventative step Microsoft has pulled the patch from its automatic update service. They are also currently investigating the problem while working to correct the security update.

If you or someone you know has encountered problems due to 2823324, then you can use the instructions listed in the KB article linked below to remove the update and bring your system back to life.

Seiki 50-inch 4K TV on sale for $1,299, offers Ultra HD for a regular HD price

by Richard Lawler

Seiki 50inch 4K TV on sale for $1,299, offers Ultra HD for a regular HD price

The entry price for Ultra HDTV plunged by more than $10,000 earlier this week thanks to Sony's new 4K sets, but now it's going even lower with this model from Seiki. The brand is new to the US market and as such unfamiliar to most, but with a $1,300 listing on TigerDirect it's been lighting up AV enthusiast and deal-hunting forums alike. We haven't yet had a chance to see this display, but hope to take a look shortly. In the meantime, there are plenty of reasons not to be an early adopter -- the infamous eye charts suggest 4K's impact at this size may be reduced, it's an unknown company with unknown standards for quality and service, a new HDMI standard may be incoming and there's no content until the $699 FMP-X1 player arrives this summer -- but with a sub-$2K pricetag some would say you can't afford not to have an Ultra HD set in your possession. Those same people would also suggest inviting us over to watch the game (sports, console, but most likely a super high-res PC title if you can manage) on it, and indicate we are willing to bring refreshments.

[Thanks, Eric Kotz]
