Sears Heard That Rent-To-Own Is Ridiculously Profitable, Decides To Try It Out

by Laura Northrup

The rent-to-own business is an extremely profitable one: who wouldn’t want to collect more than three times the list price of, say, a computer? So it’s interesting but not surprising that troubled retailer Sears is now entering the lease-to-own market in a partnership with the existing company WhyNotLeaseIt.

After testing the program in a new stores starting back in September, the program rolls out nationwide this week. The selection is pretty much the same as other rent-to-own outfits: furniture, mattresses, electronics, and home appliances.

It’s a step beyond (or a step down from, depending on your point of view) the layaway programs that Sears and Kmart revived during the recession. From the retailer’s point of view, though, it’s designed to help consumers who don’t have the benefit of psychic powers and did not start saving up for a refrigerator on a layaway plan six months before theirs broke down.

Yes, It’s Possible To Steal $45M From ATMs Around The World In Just A Few Hours

by Mary Beth Quirk

There are your everyday ATM skimming schemes, and then there are global hacking operations that allegedly siphoned $45 million from ATMs around the globe in just a few hours. It’s kind of like a flash mob, said one former prosecutor, and the ease with which it was apparently carried out has got those in the security world a little bit nervous.

So far seven people have been arrested in the U.S., reports the Associated Press, and stand accused of being the New York cell of a worldwide crime network. Authorities say thefts went down at ATMs in 27 countries from Canada to Russia, and it took law enforcement agencies from around the globe to pull off the investigation.

“Unfortunately these types of cybercrimes involving ATMs, where you’ve got a flash mob going out across the globe, are becoming more and more common,” a former federal prosecutor and regional director for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission explains. ”I expect there will be many more” of these types of crimes, she added.

The good news is that no consumers apparently lost their cash, as the hackers pulled the money from the stashes banks have to back up pre-paid debit cards, and not individual or business accounts.

According to the authorities, hackers worked their way into bank databases and erased withdrawal limits on pre-paid debit cards and made up their own access codes. Then that data would be loaded onto any old plastic card with a magnetic stripe, even a hotel key card could work.

From then on it was an old-fashioned heist, with operatives spread around the world pulling out money in multiple cities, who would then take their cuts, and then launder the rest by buying expensive goods or shipping it to the head honchos in charge of the operation.

It almost seems like the group held a trial run first, with an attack in December that stole $5 million worldwide, and then the other in February that brought in the big haul of $40 million in 10 hours, with a whopping 36,000 transactions.

The weak spot the thieves exploited seems to be the magnetic strips on the back of the cards — most of the world has ditched those cards in favor of ones with built-in chips that are a lot harder to copy. Since U.S. banks still use them, however, merchants still accept them worldwide.

How Unscripted Are Those Kids’ Responses In The AT&T Ads?

by Chris Morran

attkids2We’ve certainly made no attempt to hide our distaste with some of AT&T’s business practices, but we are all stupidly charmed by those seemingly improvised AT&T ads in which youngsters in a classroom respond to questions like “Who thinks more is better than less?” But considering how amusing some of these ads can be, we’ve been curious about just how scripted those kids’ replies are.

In an interview with E!, the lone adult in the ads, actor Beck Bennett (who, judging by the name, may be a Marvel superhero) reveals the truth.

“It’s pretty much all improvised,” he explains. “They start with the basic questions — bigger or smaller, faster or slower… all these different things — so each one of those principals has a script just in case… You want to have a safety in case these kids don’t say something fun and interesting, but they always do.”

“It’s kind of like guided improv,” adds Bennett. “We can see that they’re on track with an idea, and maybe they don’t understand where it could go… we push them a little bit further and they open up more and more and more and say some great stuff.”

Sen. McCain Back In Anti-Bundling Saddle With New Bill Pushing A La Carte Cable TV

by Mary Beth Quirk

Back in 2006, Sen. John McCain tried and failed to get Congress on board with a bit of legislation that pushed “a la carte” cable TV — programming that consumers could pick and choose instead of being forced to have 300 channels they don’t watch just to get the few they do. He’s not giving up the fight, it seems, as his office introduced a new bill to put the heat on pay TV providers to allow the a la carte option.

The Hill’s Brendan Sasso received confirmation on Wednesday that the bill was forthcoming, and just yesterday McCain set it loose upon Washington, notes The Verge.

It goes by the name of the Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013 (that has a nice ring to it, eh?) and seeks to push cable and TV companies to unfetter their customers from the chains of bundling.

One key nugget here, however, is that the bill is totally voluntary, and would in effect, dangle incentives like so many carrots in front of the cable providers and content companies. The end result would ideally be that we get to watch the channels we want, and not pay for those other tag-a-longs.

“Today, we’re putting up a stop sign,” McCain said while introducing his bill. “My legislation would eliminate regulatory barriers to a la carte by freeing up multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) – like, cable, satellite and others offering video services – to offer any video programming service on an a la carte basis.”

So how would this be done? If the MVPD doesn’t have a broadcast station or offer any other channels on an a la carte basis, that MVPD wouldn’t be able to rely on what’s known as a compulsory copyright license to carry those broadcast stations. Those licenses are what enable broadcasters to retransmit programming without getting direct permission from copyright holders.

McCain gets right down to the crux of the issue between Cablevision and Viacom, wherein Cablevision was ticked off that it had to carry channels like VH1 Classics in order to also have the other channels also offered by Viacom. That would stop, he says in the bill.

“Thus, if a cable operator doesn’t want to carry channels like MTV, it would have the option of not doing so and only buying, and carrying, the channels it thinks its consumers want to watch,” he said.

There’s also a provision that takes issue with broadcasters who are fighting over-the-air services like Aereo. McCain’s bill said that if networks threaten to pull their broadcast signals and put their programming on cable, they’ll be stripped of their spectrum, which would then be sold off by the FCC.

One last thing included in the bill — and end to the sports blackouts some customers suffer depending on the area they live in. Any venue that’s paid for in any part by taxpayer money would have to repeal blackout restrictions. That includes most professional stadiums.

“In the end, the Television Consumer Freedom Act is about giving the consumer more choices when watching television. It’s time for us to help shift the landscape to benefit television consumers,” McCain said.

While this all sounds promising, and would be a pretty major win for consumers, the TV industry is likely going to throw everything it’s got into fighting it. If the TCFA fails, we can only hope that McCain and other legislators will continue to fight the good fight. Because I don’t want to ever watch VH1 Classics.

We’re Never Going To Stop Getting Excited About Flying Car News Until We’re All Flying One

by Mary Beth Quirk
This could be it, guys.

This could be it, guys.

It’s 2013. I’m supposed to be riding in a flying car. You are, too. That was the promise we absorbed as children, our imaginations stoked by sci-fi stories, The Jetsons and Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II. We aren’t in flying cars yet, however, which is why every scrap of news related to them is another ray of childish hope. The latest news has those rays flying around in abundance.

Terrafugia, the company that debuted its street-legal Transition flying car at last year’s New York Auto Show, says it’s moving on to the next step and working on “feasibility studies” to make our dreams of flying cars a reality.

The company announced this week that it’s working on the TF-X to see if it can figure out a way to build a car that’s capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, reports CNN’s What Next blog. It would be a four-seat, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle — can’t you just imagine George Jetson behind the wheel/steering thingamajig?

“We are passionate about continuing to lead the creation of a flying car industry and are dedicating resources to lay the foundations for our vision of personal transportation,” Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich said in a media release. “Terrafugia is about increasing the level of safety, simplicity, and convenience of aviation. TF-X is an opportunity to provide the world with a new dimension of personal freedom!”

Exclamation point, indeed.

While Terrafugia’s Transition (which goes for $279,000) is already kind of a flying car, it’s meant to go in and out of airports and is seen by many as a sort of light aircraft, instead of a car.

The TF-X, on the other hand, could take off from anywhere — a roof, your backyard, the mall parking lot after picking daughter, Judy — and would feature automated systems for taking off and landing. Drivers could take over manual control at anytime.

As for the Federal Aviation Administration, which might see fleets of flying cars as yet another headache it doesn’t want, Terrafugia says it’s had “preliminary conversations” with the agency, and the FAA sounds like it’s willing to work with them to make this a reality.

Please, please make it happen, guys. My inner child will just flip out in gratitude.

Dear Movie Theater Owners: Please Don’t Do This

by Chris Morran

"There's really no good that can come of this," said a local police captain of the publicity stunt.

“There’s really no good that can come of this,” said a local police captain of the publicity stunt.

Before last summer’s horrific fatal shootings at The Dark Knight Rises screening in Colorado, hiring costumed “gunmen” to walk into a crowded movie theater as a marketing stunt would have merely been a bad idea that might have made the local news. Post-Aurora, it’s the kind of idiotically ill-advised idea that results in multiple 9-1-1 calls and the theater having to apologize to outraged customers. [Reddit via Gawker]

Kmart Gives Me BP Coupon For 30 Cents Off Gas. Excluded Items: Fuel

by Laura Northrup

congratulations

When Scott checked out at Kmart, a pretty sweet coupon printed out. What was it for? Thirty cents off per gallon (limit 20 gallons) at his local BP gas station! That’s actually a pretty good deal, and a nice Kmart/BP cross-promotion. Then he noticed the exclusions. Good coupons almost always have a lot of exclusions, so it’s smart to check them before heading for the newest BP. Scott didn’t expect the coupon to just cancel itself out, though.

Bought some stuff at Kmart today, and got a coupon upon checkout. I saw that it is for 30 cents off per gallon of gas at BP. I thought, “Great…now I’m going to fill up my gas guzzling, ozone depleting SUV for cheap!” I then read the fine print. The coupon excludes….wait for it….FUEL! A copy of the coupon with my personal information redacted is attached.

Click to view full size, for some reason.

Click to view full size, for some reason.

After reading all of the fine print, I’m pretty sure that the “Excluded Items” text is boilerplate, and stuck on every coupon, but it made me roll my eyes anyway. Gotta love it!

Scott didn’t report whether the coupon actually worked, or the fuel exclusion applied to his gasoline discount. We know that Kmart can be kind of inefficient, but they aren’t that incompetent.
