Wes Anderson Meets ‘The Shining’ in ‘The Grand Overlook Hotel’ Mash-Up

by Ethan Anderton

Grand Overlook Hotel

At first, you might think that directors Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick don’t have much in common. Their films couldn’t be on more opposite ends of the spectrum. However, Steve Ramsden used the similarity in the way Anderson and Kubrick frame shots as a reference point to create The Grand Overlook Hotel, a truly incredible mash-up of The Shining and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Watch The Grand Overlook Hotel after the jump!

Thanks to Birth.Movies.Death for bringing this to our attention. Mash-ups are a dime a dozen online, but this one is genuinely remarkable. It’s a seamless blend of two drastically different films. But the framing of shots and movement of the camera, not to mention the aesthetic of The Grand Buadpest Hotel and The Overlook Hotel, match up so well.

What makes this mash-up particularly enjoyable is that Ramsden has crafted a little story that exists between the two films as opposed to just creating a montage of clips edited together with music. The dialogue crossovers and that one shot that goes from the Overlook hallway into one of the Grand Budapest rooms is just perfect. If you’re going to do a mash-up, this is one of the best examples to take a cue from, and it’s a refreshing change of pace in quality from repurposed material online.

And for the rest of you Wes Anderson nuts out there, make sure you check out this real Italian cafe designed by the filmmaker that’s now open for business. Plus, there’s been plenty of mash-ups trying to capture the style of Wes Anderson, including what an X-Men movie in his hands might look like, and this other odd movie trailer remix of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox and Foxcatcher.

We’re still waiting to hear what director Wes Anderson has up his sleeve for his next film. The Grand Budapest Hotel was such a hit last year, including plenty of love during awards season, fans are certainly anxious to see what’s coming next. Last fall we heard Anderson was maybe considering another stop-motion animated film, but we’ve heard no new details since then. It would be very interesting to see Anderson take on a horror film, but Saturday Night Live already did that for him. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for any word on what Wes Anderson might be directing next so stay tuned.

09.02.15 – S-Type – SV8 EP

LuckyMe are very proud to present a new EP from S-Type: ‘SV8′.

The last year has been busy for S-Type – dropping his long awaited ‘Rosario’ EP to much critical acclaim, studio work alongside Baauer, and Hudson Mohawke – the gargantuan Rap Monument project – and an extensive list of rappers as well as international touring. SV8 focuses directly on the club- with less of the grandeur of his previous Billboard and Rosario EPs, these are stripped down rhythm tracks that nod to Grindin’ era Clipse, Classic Memphis Rap and the minimal yet heavyweight drum precision already so prevalent in his production. It also gives S-Type a chance to collaborate with his immediate circle of friends – Montreal producer and fellow LuckyMe alumni Lunice, Scandinavian Sad Boy Yung Gud and underground Glaswegian sensation Inkke.

Ethan Pringle does Jumbo Love 9b

DPM Climbing has the full story of Ethan Pringle making the first repeat of Chris Sharma's 80 metre long Jumbo Love 9b in Clark Mountain. Ethan had been projecting Jumbo Love since 2007 and here is a great video from 2013. © RV Project - Walker Emerson In 2000, Ethan took the silver in the Youth World Championship and his best result out of seven Lead and Boulder WC's is #16. On rock he has done a handful of 9as and Biographie 9a+ in 2007, when he was the #1 in the 8a Combined ranking game thanks to three 8B+ boulders he also climbed that year. Previously only six climbers have done 9b or harder (excluding boulder routes) out of which Adam Ondra and Chris Sharma with 12 and 8 are the only ones to have done more than one. "WOW!!! Yesterday I climbed my ultimate lifetime dream route, the most bad-ass sport climb I’ve ever laid eyes on, Chris Sharma 's ‪#‎JumboLove‬! WOW. I can’t believe it’s over. I say that half in a literal sense because when I sent it, it was almost like an out of body experience that I can barley remember happening. My story on Jumbo Love spanned over eight years and involved every emotion I can think of: awe, excitement, love, admiration, longing, apathy, fear, frustration, anger, resignation, acceptance, and eventually, MOTHERFUCKEN GLORY!!!

‘Irrational Man’ Trailer: Woody Allen’s Latest Stars Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix

by Angie Han

Irrational Man

In typical Woody Allen fashion, the writer/director has been keeping details for his next film Irrational Man under tight wraps. But with the arrival of the first Irrational Man trailer, we finally have some idea of what this movie will be about.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as a philosophy professor who’s suffering from an existential crisis: he can’t write, he can’t breathe, he “couldn’t remember the reason for living,” as he says in the promo. But he gains new purpose when he strikes up a relationship with a beautiful young student played by Emma Stone. Watch the Irrational Man trailer after the jump.

An older man prone to overthinking things, whose world is rocked by the arrival of lively younger woman: what groundbreaking new territory for Woody.

Phoenix, Stone, and Parker Posey are excellent actors and I’ve no doubt they’ll be charming as always in Irrational Man. And the distinctly Woody Allen-esque rhythm will probably please his devoted fans.

But unless there’s some kind of twist not revealed in the trailer, there’s not much about Irrational Man that looks fresh or different. Not only has Allen put out several variations of that plot before, an entire generation of filmmakers influenced by Allen have also offered their own takes on that same basic premise.

According to EW, Allen was so determined to keep the plot of Irrational Man under wraps that he didn’t even tell his stars what it was about. Posey reveals she only got to see 20 pages of the script. “I had no idea what the exact mood of the movie was,” she said. “I had no idea how I fit in or how the other characters thought of me.”

Irrational Man will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Sony Pictures Classics will then roll the film into U.S. theaters July 17.

See ‘Spirited Away’ Recreated as an 8-Bit Video Game

by Russ Fischer

Spirited Away 8-bit

Hayao Miyazaki‘s films represent some of the greatest animation in cinema, but his ideas are so close to the material in some Japanese RPG video games that it seems only natural to see some of Miyazaki’s work reimagined in video game form.

Spirited Away is among Miyazaki’s best work (OK, I think it is his best work) and one of the greatest examples of visual storytelling in animation, or any style of filmmaking. But the characters and storytelling of Spirited Away are so pure that, even distilled down into simple video game form, the ideas remain clear. Now, a set of artists has produced a Spirited Away 8-Bit “remake,” complete with sounds and music appropriate for an NES presentation. Check it out below.

This video comes courtesy of Cinefix. If we’re being critical, some of the visual design here looks more like it falls towards the 16-bit side of things, but we’ll let that slide.

(There is also a real set of games, the Ni No Kuni titles for PlayStation 3 and Nintendo DS, produced in collaboration with Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli.)

Everest Earthquake: All Climbers and Sherpas are Off the Mountain

by By Climbing Staff
Everest Earthquake: All Climbers and Sherpas are Off the Mountain

4/27/15 - After inspection of the Khumbu Icefall by helicopter and by foot from below and from above, it was determined that the route was too broken up and risk too great to descend by foot. All climbers trapped in camps one and two have been evacuated by helicopter.

Nepal: Death Toll Rises, How You Can Help

Climbers in camp two descended to camp one while three helicopters ran constant shuttles—only two people per flight because of the high altitude. All climbers and Sherpas are now in base camp. RMI mountain guide described the rescue first hand in a blog post:

"It seemed unlikely that ninety plus landings and take offs—at what was a record breaking rescue altitude for helicopters only twenty years ago—could be accomplished without chaos or catastrophe… or at least unworkable delay, but sure enough, the first B3 powered on in at 6 AM and the great Everest Air Show began. A fear of the team leaders was a helicopter mob scene a la Saigon ‘75, but we’d arrayed our helipads in a way that didn’t allow for mobbing and everybody seemed to understand the need for superior social skills on this day. There was one way out and nobody wanted to get put on the “no fly” list. Eventually there were four or five birds in the air at any time, flying a dramatic loop from BC to Camp One to BC. A line of climbers with packs formed at each pad and a stream of climbers from Camp 2 made their way into what was left of Camp 1 and then joined the queues. It took four laps in Kiwi pilot Jason’s B3 to get our team down. Although it seemed already like a full day, it was only about when Chhering and I got off the final RMI chopper. There was no back-slapping. No cheering. No high fives. We’d put down at the epicenter of a disaster and we could barely believe our eyes. Whatever relief each of us felt at being off the mountain was quickly replaced with sadness and awe at the destructive power on evidence all around us."

Read Hahn's full account and more first-hand updates on the RMI blog.

According to posts from Adventure Consultants and RMI, the teams are making plans to descend from base camp but will not leave the Khumbu Valley just yet. The country’s infrastructure is so devastated and flights and safe accommodations in such short supply, that making a plan to get to Kathmandu could take several days.

Outside Magazine’s Grayson Schaffer reported that the ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation indicated that the Everest climbing season is finished.

The country’s death toll has risen above 3,700. //

There's an Android Mascot Urinating on the Apple Logo in Google Maps

by Hypebeast

Google is known for the various Easter Eggs hidden throughout it's programming, but there is one on the map location of Rawalpindi, Pakistan that the tech giant claims they had nothing to do with — an image of the Android "droid" mascot urinating on the Apple logo. The image is pretty appropriate given the bitter rivalry between Google's Android mobile operation system and Apple's iOS. A Google spokesperson said that the image appears to have been added using Google's map-editing MapMaker software, which normally requires review from users before acceptance, but it appears this one got the seal of approval. There's no word as to how long it's been there for, but Google says they are working to fix it.

You Have the Chance to Own Paul Walker's 'The Fast and the Furious' Supra

by Hypebeast

Paul Walker's Supra from the original The Fast and the Furious movie is heading to the auction block. Representing one of the more recognizable items from the infamous film series, this particular Supra was used extensively throughout the film, including the heated final race scene between Brian O'Connor and Dominic. Although the model is packed with stunt car reinforcements, disconnected NOS bottles, and a relatively mundane 220 horsepower, the Supra is an original model that was used heavily throughout the 2001 film and is expected to generate a six-figure sale price when it hits the auction block on May 12. A Beginner's Guide to Mayweather vs. Pacquiao -- Part 1

by Hypebeast

Following five years of back-and-forth trash talking and repeatedly failed negotiations, Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao and Floyd “The Best Ever” Mayweather, Jr. are set to battle on May 2nd in what is billed to be the superfight of our generation. The two combatants are often regarded as the most proficient fighters of our time, and the fight’s widespread media coverage, projected earnings and fan exposure are elements that have been notably absent from the boxing world for some time. Fights in the past that have sparked similar interest include Tyson vs. Lewis, Ali vs. Frazier I, Schleming vs. Louis and Ray Robinson vs. LaMotta. However, these fights occurred largely before a digital era where large portions of the population could tune in from around the world. There’s no doubt the magnitude of May 2nd’s fight will attract a huge contingency of viewers, ranging from both seasoned boxing fans to casual fans. For those looking to get a full rundown of the fight, here’s a primer for you.

In one corner is Mayweather, an Olympic Bronze Medalist who has since gone on to be undefeated in his professional career. Known for his incredible skills inside the ropes, Mayweather has also become quite the entertainer outside the ring, as he is also recognized for his brash and polarizing personality. Full of confidence, he has bestowed several haughty nicknames on himself at various points in his career -- Pretty Boy, Money, and most recently The Best Ever. Born into a family of boxers, the Grand Rapids-bred fighter knew the gift he possessed since his troubled childhood, having never seriously considered any other profession.

An analysis of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. presents itself as a defensive masterclass. An epitome of the sweet science, Mayweather fights like a ghost inside the ring, passively evading opponents' punches while countering with his own assault. Floyd's style personifies boxing’s greatest advisory ethos “hit and don’t get hit,” and this embodiment can directly be represented in numbers. Compubox -- a database company which measures a fighter’s activity inside the ring -- has a specific category tracking plus/minus ratios. This statistic measures the percentage a fighter is able to connect with a punch, and subtracts that number by the percentage of times they are hit. Atop the list by a wide margin sits Floyd Mayweather, Jr. with a score of plus 24 points -- 6 whole points ahead of the next runner up. Relying on his masterful technique, footwork, combined with gifted reflexes, hand and foot speed, Mayweather has allowed opponents to land only an average of 17% of their punches, while connecting with 41% of his own.

In the opposing corner is Pacquiao, known for his unrelenting pace and crushing power. “Pac-Man” is the first and only fighter to hold world championship titles in eight different weight classes. Possessing an extensive record filled with David versus Goliath-type contests, the humble Filipino has knocked out or completely dominated larger menacing fighters throughout the latter part of his career. Pacquiao’s fighting approach is often associated with one word: offense. His adept ability to find punching angles and use of footwork is highly remarkable among southpaw fighters, and presents a unique set of challenges for opponents who are not used to such proficiencies. His quick, calculated movements, combined with his high-volume assault, have helped the Filipino lull many of his opponents into defeat. Of his 57 victories inside the ring, 38 have come by knockout.

Aside from their pugilist success, the two contestants are almost the complete antithesis of each other. Breaking out of abject poverty, Pacquiao is a devout Catholic and a congressman in the Philippines, who represents the province of Sarangani. His humility hides his aggressiveness and violent capabilities within the ring, and perpetuates an unassuming and timid professional appearance. Pacquiao’s marketability has earned him a slew of global endorsements such as Nike and Kia Motors. Conversely, Mayweather fronts a materialistic, antagonistic image, focusing on the vanities of fame and fortune, in addition to his multiple run-ins with the law. Less worried about legacy, he openly admits his motivations for competition are driven by money. Although the undefeated fighter draws a large number of pay-per-view buys, he does not have any major sponsorships, electing to promote his own line of apparel, The Money Team.

With both Mayweather and Pacquiao competing around the same weight class, serious speculation regarding the outcome of a meeting between the two can be traced back as early as 2009. However, the respective fighters’ ascent in rank began at a much earlier time.

Mayweather’s incumbency to the mythical pound-for-pound title started in 2004, the year in which he defeated former champion DeMarcus Corley. Twenty-seven years of age at the time, Mayweather Jr. had cruised through almost every champion and contender put in front of him, effortlessly capturing titles in various weight classes. Statistically speaking, Mayweather is undoubtedly the greatest amongst his contemporaries, and a serious argument can be made for him being the greatest of all time. His defensive prowess and selective potshotting has helped him become the most efficient prizefighter ever, who to this day has still never been knocked down. Following three highly successful years atop the sport, dispensing with the vicious Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Arturo Gatti and Carlos Baldomir, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. abruptly announced his retirement in 2007, leaving his coveted throne for the taking.

Manny Pacquiao was the sensible heir. Blitzing through weight classes, the 5' 6½" inch fighter was thrashing heavier opponents with ease, legitimizing himself as the pound-for-pound candidate for the throne with a dominating welterweight debut over the legendary Oscar De La Hoya.

Soon after the victory, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. would announce his return to the sport, protesting his loss in ranking. However, Pacquiao would reassert his position with a destructive 12th round referee stoppage of dangerous champion Miguel Cotto, perhaps his most impressive career performance to date. A media frenzy sparked immediately after, with fans demanding a match between Mayweather and Pacquiao. This spawned the beginning of negotiations for a megafight.

The talks repeatedly broke down due to disputes over a variety of issues, chiefly related to the location, date, split of the purse, and the methods of drug testing. Each respective camp diverted the blame, with conflicting reports as to what the counterpart had requested.

One major issue revolved around a disagreement over the form of pre-fight drug testing. For the first time in his career, Mayweather required himself and his opponents to undertake random drug testing throughout the duration of the training camp, something he has become a strong proponent of since. This method makes it difficult for fighters to time their doping cycle, as they’re not given sufficient time to flush out the traces of performance enhancing drugs. Pacquiao’s team was reluctant, claiming their fighter was afraid of needles and believed that drawing too much blood too often would weaken him prior to the fight. Because of this refusal, despite lack of evidence, the Mayweather camp implicitly accused Pacquiao of cheating, resulting in a defamation lawsuit which was eventually settled out of court.

Although Pacquiao’s aversion to this regulatory program may seem suspicious, many of Mayweather’s negotiation requests were tipped considerably in his own favor. For example, another highly disputed topic during negotiations was the date and location of the fight. Due to Manny’s congressional obligations, many of the dates requested by Floyd did not give a sufficient amount of time for preparation to his opponent.

Additionally, Mayweather’s compensation demands for the fight wildly benefited himself. At one point during negotiations, Mayweather offered Pacquiao a flat rate guarantee of $40 million USD, the catch being Pacquiao would have to forfeit his due share from the pay-per-view earnings. At the time of Mayweather’s proposal, the fight was projected to earn an outstanding $160 million USD in pay-per-view revenue in the U.S. alone. If such a deal was agreed by both parties, Mayweather would have been the clear monetary benefactor at the expense of his opponent.

Conclusion

Stay tuned for the second part that will further analyze the fight by profiling the trainers on both sides of the ring. It will also include details regarding the official contract settlement, as well as the overall projected earnings for the forthcoming showdown.

Leave your thoughts on part one, and share what you may want to see touched upon in part two in the comment section below.

Video Blog Reaction: Warner Bros’ CinemaCon 2015 Presentation

by Peter Sciretta

Warner Bros CinemaCon

I’m in Las Vegas for the CinemaCon convention (formerly ShoWest), which is the largest gathering of movie theatre exhibitors each year. The convention is packed with talks about subjects such as how to maximize profits, and features a show floor filled with the newest and best concessions equipment. More notably, most of the major movie studios hold presentations of upcoming film line-ups for the next year and beyond. Companies even show some of their films early to get some excitement from those booking the screens.

Tuesday afternoon we saw a presentation from Warner Bros Pictures showcasing some of their big upcoming films including Vacation, Creed, Point Break, In The Heart Of The Sea, Black Mass and more. After the presentation I recorded a spoiler free Warner Bros CinemaCon reaction video reaction with Steve from Collider, which you can watch that now embedded after the jump.

See the Tech Concepts Powering the Droid BB-8 in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

by Russ Fischer

bb-8-tech

Everyone fell in love with the droid BB-8 at the Force Awakens panel that opened Star Wars Celebration yesterday. Seeing the droid live on stage was a huge treat, especially as many people had never considered the idea that it might be a practical effect.

We know that part of the work for BB-8 was done by Neal Scanlan, but Kathleen Kennedy also mentioned that Bob Iger of Disney had found the company whose tech made the character possible. Turns out, that company is appropriately called Sphero, based in Colorado. That company’s primary product is a big part of what makes the little guy go.

Sphero was brought into Disney’s “accelerator” program last year, which invests capital in promising startup tech companies. The process also pairs companies with a mentor at Disney; no surprise, Iger was paired with Sphero.

Fortune reports that the company, the name of which was revealed by Kennedy off-stage, is a “connected play company, fusing digital and physical play by creating toys and robots that you control with a smart device.”

So it’s pretty easy to see how that licensed tech plays into the creation of the Star Wars droid. The company has two primary products, one also called Sphero, which is described as “an app-controlled ball that does it all.” There are also vague indications that a toy or replica version will be available to purchase at some point in the future. Given that Sphero is already making a small toy, it’s not difficult to guess that there are big BB-8 licensing plans.

So how does it work? Here’s a graph of the guts of the toy version from Sphero, which features a gyroscope for stabilization. (Click to enlarge.) To make BB-8 there are some more elements — most likely magnets to keep the “head” in place, and some other mechanics to rotate the head. How Stuff Works has more talk about the droid. The specifics of the BB-8 tech may be a little more complex, as it needs to be able to perform, but the mechanics seem surprisingly simple to suss out. (If not to perfect.)

sphero-graphic

Here’s a marketing video from the company:

Or, you could just turn to the xkcd comic that proposed this very concept back in 2008:

Watch: Quentin Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’ Teaser Trailer Is Finally Online

by Angie Han

Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained

If you were one of the few people who caught Sin City: A Dame to Kill For last summer, you’re one of the few people who’ve already seen the first The Hateful Eight teaser trailer from Quentin Tarantino and The Weinstein Co. For everyone else, the Hateful Eight teaser trailer is finally available online. You can check it out after the jump.

TWC officially released the Hateful Eight teaser this week, months after its initial theatrical debut.

At the point when the Hateful Eight teaser was released, Tarantino hadn’t started shooting. So the first teaser doesn’t have any footage, just a cool animation set to Iggy and the Stooges’ “Gimme Danger.”

The “Eight” of the title are:

  • Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren, “The Bounty Hunter”
  • Kurt Russell as John Ruth, “The Hangman”
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue, “The Prisoner”
  • Walton Goggins as Chris Mannix, “The Sheriff”
  • Demian Bichir as Bob, “The Mexican”
  • Tim Roth as Oswald Mobray, “The Little Man”
  • Michael Madsen as Joe Gage, “The Cow Puncher”
  • Bruce Dern as General Sandy Smithers, “The Confederate”

Channing Tatum also stars in an unspecified role. The Hateful Eight opens later this year.

In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

Exploring Abandoned Spaces in NYC

by Hypebeast

Brooklyn-resident Will Ellis is a keen explorer, who possesses a proclivity for adventure and discovery within the compact city of New York. Fortunately, he is also a photographer, capturing his expeditions and displaying them on his website, Abandoned NYC. The photographs exhibit something that's quite eerie, yet beautiful within the rotting interiors of the decrepit deserted spaces. "I was also fascinated by the visuals inside. As a kid I loved all things creepy -- Halloween was my favorite holiday and that’s something I never grew out of” says Ellis. He seeks out new places to uncover online, through other "urban explorers" and also uses Google Maps -- looking for places with unused cars to indicate it's uninhabited. In his three years active, he has visited 50 different locations across New York City, publishing a collection of 150 images in a book titled Abandoned NYC, all without being arrested (occasional security guard run-ins do occur, however). Will Ellis recently spoke with WIRED regarding his exploits. To read article, visit here.

SnapPower Turns Your Outlet Into a USB Charger

by Hypebeast
daveh

Anyone want to make a bulk order?

A new product currently raising funds through Kickstarter is aiming to solve the all-to-common problem of relying on USB ports to charge devices. Instead of carrying around a plug adapter, and occupying wall ports all the time, the SnapPower Charger adds a USB port to the bottom of your wall power outlet without a need for rewiring. The faceplate screws onto the wall in place of the old one, and conveniently adds a single USB port. You can pre-order the SnapPower Charger for $14 for a single, or $110 for a pack of 10. Head over to their Kickstarter page to make your pledge.

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness Now on Netflix Instant

by noreply@blogger.com (daniel thomas)

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, the 2014 Japanese documentary about Studio Ghibli and its founders Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki and (occasionally) Isao Takahata, is now available on Netflix Instant. The film is already available on iTunes, Amazon Instant and DVD.

Hopefully, this could mean more Studio Ghibli movies could make the migration to digital streaming. I would expect that to happen, sooner or later, as that's the direction the movie industry is headed. The Blu-Ray format has already peaked a couple years ago, and it's doubtful that consumers are willing to dip their toes in the pool for yet another media format ("Ultra HD" 4K). There's only so many times one is willing to purchase the exact same movies, and we've already moved from VHS to DVD to BD, with a couple extra stops (Beta, LaserDisc, HD-DVD) along the way. We're tired of this scam. Just put everything up on Netflix and Hulu, please. Online is devouring cable, and there's no reason to think it won't devour physical formats, as well.

As for me, I'm holding out for the "Super Ultra HD Turbo Alpha 3: Third Strike" format to arrive. Then I'll have the perfect home movie library!

'Spectre' trailer teases Blofeld appearance

The thing that I've loved the most about the Daniel Craig series of Bond films is the style and class of his version of James Bond. After Sean Connery and Roger Moore left the franchise, it just seemed that James Bond went from being classic to being glitzy. The focus shifted to gadgets and explosions and the dialog and acting really took a back seat to all that action.

Videogame Classics - Street Fighter 3: Third Strike

by noreply@blogger.com (daniel thomas)

Is Street Fighter 3: Third Strike the greatest fighting game for the Sega Dreamcast? Normally, it's Soul Calibur that's hailed as the masterpiece, and given the thunderous reception to its unveiling in 1999, to say nothing of its influence on videogames, it's hard to argue. But I can't think of a better 2D fighting game than Third Strike. And I remember the days when Street Fighter was the hot trailblazer.

Funny how times change. Street Fighter 2 became a sensation on the Super Nintendo, very nearly saving the console after being beaten senseless by the Sega Genesis in 1991. Two console generations later, and the release of Third Strike on Dreamcast was barely noticed. The dedicated fans knew the score, of course, but the general gaming public? The gaming press, the prozines? Shrug. 3D polygons were hot, and 2D was passe and old. We'll never mind the fact that nearly all polygon games from the '90s have aged terribly, while Capcom's fighters look as sharp and exciting as ever.

John Lennon warned you kids about instant karma. He wasn't kidding.

No doubt Capcom had burned many bridges by the end of the decade, watering down their brand with too many sequels and spinoffs. Sega made the very same mistakes themselves. Of course, Third Strike would appear on Dreamcast - the two were meant for each other. Interesting, also, that this was the final Street Fighter game for the better part of the decade. This really was the peak, wasn't it? Yes, there is now Street Fighter 4. But it's squarely a retro remake, and with polygons, at that. That will likely be final resting place for the series. It's far cheaper to peddle in nostalgia once you reach a certain age.

Street Fighter 3 went through two installments before Third Strike arrived, and there was a backlash because the game was too new. Too many different and strange characters, and only Ken and Ryu to represent the old school. Third Strike found the right balance, not only adding Akuma and Chun-Li, but finally refining the newer characters so they felt like the older ones, while retaining a unique flavor. This guy is sort of like Dhalsim. That guy reminds you of Zangief. That one guy is just like Guile, only more of a 1970 Deep Purple vibe. And so on and so on.

Third Strike found the perfect balance, that elusive center. It was familiar, it continued the tradition. Yet it was new, fresh, vibrant. The hip-hop soundtrack is another masterstroke. This is the best music in any fighting game, ever.

I remember at the time that Third Strike was hailed as a "back to basics" game that stripped down the excesses of all the sequels and focused on the core fighting of the original Street Fighter 2. This was interpreted as being slow or lacking flash, as somehow there was less game there. How wrong we all were. That the game was sleeker, slimmer, more efficient....yes, very true. But it was also the fastest, fiercest, most intense fighter in the series. You can see that today on all the tournament videos roaming the internet. Once the competitive gamers figured this out, a new game was revealed.

I think games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 and the Vs. series - Marvel Vs. Capcom, yadda yadda - present a more manic form, more chaotic. Street Fighter 3: Third Strike feels more tactical, more intelligent. It's slower, but never slow. The intense combat is some of the fastest action around. And it's far more fluid and kinetic than the Street Fighter 2 series. Just watch some Youtube videos and see for yourself.

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike looks absolutely spectacular, and it's arguably the high point for sprite-based graphics. I'm running through my mind, and I cannot come up with a single title this decade that has surpassed it. This is the sort of thing that can only come out of anime culture. You must have a true love for the hand-drawn craft, and you must have the skills to understand. I'm thinking of the wonderfully fluid motions of the fighters, of the stylish poses in portraits, of the way they walk onto the screen before a match.

Backgrounds, too, are drawn in spectacular washes of color. wonderfully saturated in warm and cold tones. Street Fighter has never looked better, and it stays unique. I never cared for the look of SNK's fighters. They were always a little too bright, the fighters shaded like CG renders. Third Strike feels grittier, sharper, less overly cartoony. The hip-hop vibe permeates. I also especially appreciate that all the graphics are rendered in sprites and not polygons. No doubt Capcom took some hits for this artistic decision. Marval Vs. Capcom 2 has those wonderful polygon backgrounds, and it became a great hit on Dreamcast. Flash sells first impressions in a way that quiet confidence cannot.

But flash will quickly fade. Confidence lasts. It's 2009 and we're still talking about Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, and we're still talking about Sega Dreamcast. All of which brings us back to my original thought: is this the greatest fighting game on the DC? The easy money's on Soul Calibur, or perhaps the Japanese version of Dead or Alive 2. Can't argue with those games; they're classics and earned their respect. But here lies another fighting classic, one that might possibly stand as the last great 2D fighting game. The fans need to stand up and argue the case.
