Mixionary: The Art of the Classic Cocktail

by Andi Teran

Mixionary Bloody Mary

Though once considered more of a learned skill than an elevated art form, mixology has gone one to become a phenomenon. Whether you’re a purist and revere the classics or prefer the thrill of spirited invention, concocting cocktails is a marriage of science and innovation. Australian creative agency The Monkeys has taken that concept a step further with Mixionary, a series of color-blocked posters that celebrate the most beloved cocktails through deconstructed screen prints.

Created in collaboration with the beverage company Diageo, Mixionary sees classic cocktails like the Vodka Martini and Bloody Mary represented in color blocks that vary in size according to their volume within the drink. A Gin & Tonic becomes alternating blocks of cool grey and bright green while a Cosmopolitan juxtaposes the brightness of cranberry juice and a twist of lemon with the pale puce of Smirnoff vodka. From far away, each print resembles a stretched out homage to Josef Albers or a modern movie poster devoid of graphics and titles. It’s a genius idea that begs for further renditions. Check out more here.

Botanical Blueprints by Macoto Murayama

by Alex Santoso

Lathyrus odoratus blueprint by Macoto Murayama

How would an engineer or an architect go about and design a flower? With blueprints, of course!

When he was studying at Miyagi University in Japan a few years ago, Macoto Murayama was inspired to combine the worlds of architecture and scientific illustration and apply computer illustration techniques to diagram flowers in great details.

Murayama carefully dissected flowers, removed their anatomical parts with a scalpel to the individual parts - the petals, anther, stigma and so on - under a magnifying glass, and then sketched and photographed them. He then recreated the flowers, part by part, using computer graphic software - in essence, he has created botanical blueprints for some of nature's most beautiful flowers.

Frantic Gallery in Tokyo has fantastic images from Murayama's 2011 exhibition, titled "Inorganic Flora." Check it out: Link

Statistics jokes

by Nathan Yau

There's a fun CrossValidated thread on statistics jokes. Here's the one with the top votes:

A statistician's wife had twins. He was delighted. He rang the minister who was also delighted. "Bring them to church on Sunday and we'll baptize them," said the minister. "No," replied the statistician. "Baptize one. We'll keep the other as a control.

This line by George Burns is my favorite though:

If you live to be one hundred, you've got it made. Very few people die past that age.

Any other good ones?

This is still one of my favorites:

Two kinds of people

This is my first tattoo. It’s a phrase from Ray Bradbury’s book called ‘The Illustrated Man’. For me write it’s everything I have, I dropped out of Law school to become a writer and my family got mad with me, but I don’t regret. Life for me is writing.
