‘Affordable’ Tesla Model 3 electric car gets 5-star reveal from Elon Musk

by Alan Boyle

have they fixed some of the issues with cars exploding?

Tesla Motors’ Model 3 electric sedan may be geared for mass-market affordability, but CEO Elon Musk made it clear at tonight’s unveiling that he doesn’t intend it to be a third-rate car.

“It will be five-star in every category,” Musk told a standing-room-only, occasionally raucous crowd at Tesla’s warehouse-sized design studio at Hawthorne, Calif.

The $35,000 Model 3’s promised capabilities were arguably the biggest surprise of the evening: Musk said the scaled-down sedan would still have ample room for five people, thanks to a design that moves the instrument panel farther forward than the panel in the $70,000 Model S.

Even the base model will go from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, Musk said. And the driving range will be at least 215 miles on a charge.

“These are minimum numbers,” Musk said. “We hope to exceed them.”

The car will have front and rear trunks, and “more cargo capacity than any gasoline car with the same external dimensions,” Musk said.

Would there be room to carry a 7-foot-long surfboard on the inside? “The answer is yes,” Musk said.

The only cloud of uncertainty hanging over the evening had to do with the fact that the Model 3 isn’t anywhere near ready for production. The day before, Musk said tonight was only “Part 1” of the car’s unveiling. “Part 2, which takes things to another level, will be closer to production,” he tweeted.

The cars should start rolling off the assembly line in Fremont, Calif., by late 2017, with delivery soon afterward. “I feel fairly confident that it will be next year,” said Musk, indirectly referring to his propensity for letting schedules slip.

The Tesla faithful were confident as well: Musk announced that 115,000 orders for the car were received in the first 24 hours, backed up by $1,000 deposits.

To juice up all those cars, Musk said that the number of fast-charging stations around the world would rise from 3,600 to 7,200 by the end of next year, and that there’d be 15,000 standard “Destination Chargers,” set up in cooperation with hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and other locales. That expansion is aimed at reducing the range anxiety that’s typically associated with all-electric vehicles.

“You will be able to go virtually anywhere,” Musk said.

Previously: Buyers throng to sign up for Tesla Model 3, sight unseen

The Model 3 is a key part of what Musk calls Tesla’s “secret master plan” to bring electric cars into the mainstream and reduce fossil-fuel emissions for the environment’s sake.

“It’s very important to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport,” he said.

The new line is also a key part of Musk’s not-so-secret plan for Tesla’s profitability. He acknowledged that the $100,000-plus Tesla Roadster, the $70,000 Model S and the $80,000 Model X SUV were priced to bring in the money necessary to develop the Model 3.

“The Model 3 is happening because of you,” Musk told the crowd, many of whom were already Tesla owners.

After the big reveal, the meeting was quickly adjourned for a series of test drives that went late into the night.

Update for 9:58 a.m. PT April 1: Musk reports that the tally of orders amounted to 180,000 in the first 24 hours. He also indicates that a lot of folks will be buying those cars for more than $35,000, due to added options:

For a level-headed first look at the Model 3, including the unresolved questions about issues ranging from delivery schedules to the suspension system, check out Alex Roy’s review for The Drive.

Turner Sports to broadcast March Madness semifinal and championship games in virtual reality

by Taylor Soper
Ivy Esquero

It'll be really interesting to see if this catches on.

March Madness is the latest sporting event to be broadcast in virtual reality.

Turner Sports announced today that it is partnering with Oculus to provide live virtual reality coverage of the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four Semifinals and National Championship this weekend.

Gear VR

The feed will stream a 180-degree view of the game from a courtside perspective, along with a virtual scoreboard with live stats and audio from both the commentators and sounds in the arena. Those with a Samsung Gear VR device can watch the live action via the NCAA March Madness Live VR App in the Oculus store.

Helping produce the live feed is Voke, a new virtual realty technology company specializing in live streams of sports and music events that raised a $12.5 million round earlier this month. Using a stereoscopic, panoramic camera system, Voke creates a 3D live stream of events that can be broadcast to any VR device.

Turner is also offering a 2D, 180-degree live stream on desktop for the games this weekend, in addition to 360-degree highlights posted to the NCAA March Madness Facebook page.

This is yet another example of broadcast giants dipping their toes in the virtual reality world. Last month, FOX Sports inked a 5-year deal with NextVR to stream virtual content from its live sports broadcasts. The first official event in that partnership was at the big Daytona 500 NASCAR race last month, as fans wearing a Samsung Gear VR headset at home had an up-close-and-personal view of the action, along with audio commentary and graphics that showed the race leaders.

On a related note, Oculus on Monday shipped the final version of its Oculus Rift headset to Kickstarter backers, bringing consumer-grade virtual reality to everyday consumers for the first time. The Samsung Gear VR headset, which debuted in November, differs from the Oculus Rift and soon-to-be released HTC Vive and Playstation Vue because it streams content through a Samsung smartphone.

Stagg Pour-Over Kettle Takes Top Award at NY NOW Winter Show

Stagg Pour-Over Kettle by Fellow

The Stagg Pour-Over Kettle, designed by San Francisco start-up, Fellow

San Francisco-based startup, Fellow, just scored a big win at NY NOW, the home, lifestyle, and gift winter trade show, taking home the event’s top prize—Best in Market—for its uber stylish Stagg Pour-Over Kettle. That’s quite an honor for a kettle, but the justification lies in Stagg’s trifecta of highly desirable and immaculately engineered factors, each of which plays a part in comprising its shiny good looks: its spout, its handle, and its built in thermometer. Fellow, which traces its inception to a Kickstarter campaign launched by three design-savvy coffee obsessives, has been in business for less than a year, and has released the Stagg Kettle on the heels of its initial product offering, Duo, a dual-chamber French press coffee maker.

Stagg Pour-Over Kettle Polished Steel

Taking the top prize at NY NOW, the sculptural Stagg Pour-Over Tea Kettle by San Francisco design studio, Fellow.

PRECISION POUR SPOUT: “A slow and steady pour wins the race,” say the experts at Fellow, and coffee aficionados will understand exactly what they mean. Apparently, there’s something called ‘optimal pour-over flow rate,’ key to the perfect hand made cup of coffee, and it’s dictated by two factors that extract flavor from coffee grinds: the surface area over which the grids are distributed; and the interaction time between grinds and water. To that end, the Stagg Kettle has been exactingly designed to ensure that achieving this ideal pour-over flow rate is facilitated by the kettle’s physical form—vis-à-vis an elegant gooseneck spout and a weighted handle that makes the pouring motion easier.

Stagg Pour-Over Kettle Thermometer

An integrated analog thermometer on the lid of the Stagg Pour-Over Kettle signals when the ideal coffee brewing temperature has been reached.

BREW-RANGE THERMOMETER: The Stagg Kettle’s built-in analog thermometer, integrated into its lid, tracks the water’s temperature as it boils, displaying the optimal brew temperature when it’s been reached—reported to be between 195 and 205 degrees fahrenheit—ensuring the birth of a heavenly hand-brewed cup of coffee.

Stagg Pour-Over Kettle Matte Black

The Stagg Pour-Over Kettle is available in matte black or polished stainless steel.

High grade stainless steel in a choice of handsome matte black and polished steel highlights Stagg’s refined, sculptural beauty, which holds a liter of water, and is compatible with gas, electric or induction stove tops. Best of all, the Stagg Pour-Over Kettle has been designed to impress at the relatively modest price of $69.

Microsoft’s Nadella to unveil vision for ‘Conversation as a Platform,’ betting big on chatbots

by Todd Bishop

Too bad their last chatbot went Hitler. But they are doing interesting things with language and AI.

SAN FRANCISCO — Bloomberg Businessweek’s new cover story offers a preview of what will be a major theme of Microsoft’s Build developer conference here this morning: artificial intelligence, and specifically intelligent bots that can order pizza, help the visually impaired see the world around them, and hopefully not learn to be racist in the future.

clippybbw
Bloomberg Businessweek’s cover on Microsoft’s new chatbot strategy.

But it’s not just a theme for the conference; it’s a new strategy for the company more broadly. The article, by longtime Microsoft beat reporter Dina Bass, goes behind the scenes at the company to report on CEO Satya Nadella’s vision for what he describes as “Conversation as a Platform” — referring to conversation between humans and AI agents, or bots.

The company will use the Build keynote this morning to demonstrate early versions of this technology, and position its developer tools and cloud services as a means for companies to create their own bots.

Bloomberg Businessweek’s article also delves into the recent aftermath of Tay.ai, the millennial chatbot that was pulled offline by the company after the Internet taught it to be racist. Nadella emailed the team behind the project after the incident to tell them to “keep pushing,” according to the article.

Bass also reports on the origins of the “Conversation as a Platform” strategy.

Nadella has only been planning Microsoft’s strategy shift since October. He was on a two-hour flight back to Seattle from Silicon Valley with Qi Lu, who oversees applications and services such as Bing, Skype, and Office, and Derrick Connell, search-engineering vice president. Lu pulled out his laptop to show Nadella some AI ideas he’d been working on. He went over the science, and Nadella asked what it could mean for Microsoft’s products. Connell showed him designs for new, AI-enhanced versions of the Outlook e-mail program and Skype. By the time the plane landed, Nadella decided it was the big strategic move the company needed.

The strategy grew in part out of Lu’s visit to China last year, where he saw the rise of chatbots as an outgrowth of apps including WeChat. Read the full Bloomberg Businessweek cover story here.

Stay tuned to GeekWire for live coverage from Microsoft Build starting this morning.

Apple inks deal with Major League Baseball to let managers use iPads in dugouts during games

by Taylor Soper

Well at least they'll get the name right first time around. And it's stupid that the NFL is essentially using a computer as a stupid screen only for replays. Trust the MLB to actually go to analysis first.

The NFL has the Surface.

Now, MLB has the iPad.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday evening that Major League Baseball has inked a multi-year deal with Apple that will allow managers to use iPads as a way to analyze player data during games in the dugout and training.

Each team will have the option of using a 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablet with a custom MLB Dugout app to access a wealth of data and statistics, from information on pitcher-hitter match-ups to video of past plays, the Journal noted. The data, which includes info from the new Statcast technology, will be proprietary to each team and is pre-loaded on tablets before games.

“Our collaboration with Apple on the use of iPad Pro in dugouts and bullpens is part of our ongoing effort to introduce extraordinary technology into our game,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We are pleased that Apple’s groundbreaking products, which have already improved the access that fans have to our sport, will now inform the decisions that make our games interesting and exciting throughout the year.”

Managers and players will be able to look at data like this, which shows situational stats.
Managers and players will be able to look at data like this, which shows situational stats.

It’s a big move by MLB, which traditionally banned any technology from dugouts and bullpens during games, but has recently eased those restrictions.

Now with the upcoming season that kicks off next month, you may see managers swiping away on their iPad during a game inside the dugout, versus going into the clubhouse to do so like in years past. League rules still mandate that the tablets are not be connected to the Internet while in use in the dugout and bullpen, however. Support for Apple Pencil and video annotation will be added later, MLB said.

This is also important given how data and analytics has impacted baseball, perhaps more so than other professional sports.

The Journal reported that terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Microsoft, meanwhile, paid $400 million to the NFL in 2013 as part of a 5-year deal that allows players and coaches to use custom-built Surface tablets that lets them be more efficient in how they review past plays on the sidelines during games.

The NFL is now also testing video streaming of past plays on the tablets. It will be interesting to see if NFL players and coaches start using the Surface tablets beyond just replays and more for data analysis, much like how the MLB envisions its managers utilizing the iPads.

Editor’s note: This story was updated with more details about the partnership between Apple and MLB, along with screenshots.

The weird fact about boxing in Ghana is all world champions are from Bukom, a small neighborhood of Accra. Bukom is a poor suburb, most people work as fishermen. But boxing here has a long tradition - it is the second nature of the people as many say. Hundreds of years ago, the Ga-People, an ethnic group who lives mainly in Accra, developed their own way of fighting. Due to the British influence during colonization, the Ga came in touch with boxing. Since then boxing is the most famous sport in Bukom. There are now more captive Lions in South Africa than wild ones; approx 8000 compared to 2000 living in the wild. Many of these animals are reared specifically to be shot and owned by wealthy tourists from Europe and North America. Between 2001-2006 1830 Lion trophies were exported from South Africa, in the following five years 4062 trophies were exported from SA an increase of 122%. As result of this increase in 2011 the South African government effectively banned the practise of ‘canned hunting’ by requiring an animal to roam free for two years before it could be hunted, severley restricting breeders and hunters' profitability. But lion breeders challenged the policy in South Africa's courts and a high court judge eventually ruled that such restrictions were ‘not rational’. The number of trophy hunted animals has since soared. Demand from the Far East is also driving profits for lions breeders. In 2001, two lions were exported as "trophies" to China, Laos and Vietnam; in 2011, 70 lion trophies were exported to those nations. While the trade in tiger parts is now illegal, demand for lion parts for traditional Asian medicine is soaring. In 2009, five lion skeletons were exported from South Africa to Laos; in 2011, it was 496. The legal export of lion bones and whole carcasses has also soared. Breeders argue it is better that hunters shoot a captive-bred lion than further endanger the wild populations, but conservationists and animal welfare groups dispute this. Van Gogh’s Bedroom Paintings Recreated by Art Institute of Chicago & Airbnb

by Promila Shastri
Ivy Esquero

I really like this concept, but not sure I can do a Van Gogh - his colors IRL would make me feel sick.

Van Gogh's Bedroom

A Vincent Van Gogh painting of his bedroom in Arles (below) is recreated as an Airbnb room (above) in Chicago.

Anyone who has ever wondered what it might feel like to actually inhabit a Vincent Van Gogh painting can finally find out, thanks to a fairly stunning publicity stunt by the Art Institute of Chicago. Together with Airbnb and ad agency Leo Burnett, the museum has pulled off a coup that has art lovers and Van Gogh obsessives, in particular, feeling somewhat breathless: a life-sized, three-dimensional recreation of a bedroom featured in a suite of paintings by Van Gogh, designed to coincide with the exhibit, Van Gogh’s Bedrooms, which opened this past weekend in Chicago.

The Bedroom by Vincent Van Gogh

One of three paintings made by Vincent Van Gogh, depicting his bedroom in Arles.

The Art Institute of Chicago’s new exhibit, Van Gogh’s Bedrooms, unites, for the first time in North America, the three paintings that Vincent Van Gogh made of his bedroom in a small house in the southern French city of Arles, where he lived during the last few years of his life. His rented room was simply furnished and distinct for, among other things, it’s asymmetrical shape. Van Gogh described the room vividly: “I have painted the walls pale violet. The ground with checked material. The wooden bed and the chairs, yellow like fresh butter; the sheet and the pillows, lemon light green. The bedspread, scarlet colored. The window, green. The washbasin, orangey; the tank, blue. The doors, lilac.”

Van Gogh's Bedrom Recreated

Ad agency Leo Burnet helped bring Van Gogh’s Bedroom paintings to life as an Airbnb room for rent.

Available to rent for the preposterously paltry sum of $10 a night, Van Gogh’s Bedroom gives guests a surreal opportunity to reside briefly inside the vivid hues and layered brushwork that remain emblems of the Dutch master’s work. And, as if any more incentive were needed, 2 free tickets to the room’s namesake exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago is included as a bonus. Airbnb’s description of the room is nothing, if not quaint: “This room will make you feel like you’re living in a painting. It’s decorated in a Post-Impressionist style, reminiscent of Southern France and times gone by. Its furniture, bright colors, and artwork will give you the experience of a lifetime.”

Air BNB Van Gogh Bedroom

Details evident in Vincent Van Gogh’s Bedroom paintings have been painstakingly composed in Van Gogh’s Bedroom on Airbnb

In bringing to full-scale life Van Gogh’s Bedroom paintings, a room in a downtown Chicago building was meticulously furnished, composed, and given the expressionistic brushwork needed to replicate the artist’s 3 masterpieces, which he executed over an 11-month span, between 1888-1889. Says Pete Lefebvre, creative director at Leo Burnett, “We thought the best way to help people understand Van Gogh’s life was to invite them to spend a night in this room. Hairy & Quirky Coffee Table

Ivy Esquero

disturbing on so many levels...

The Spirit of New York Streets Since the 1970s by Robert Herman

by Léa
Ivy Esquero

Train one definitely changed.

Mario Kart Racing Makes The Leap Into Real Life

by Zeon Santos
Ivy Esquero

OMG GUYS! CAN WE ORGANIZE A GLOBAL REUNION AND DO THIS PLEASE!

Mario and Luigi would look really strange in real life, and their frantic Kart racing sessions would look even stranger considering all the banana peels, winged turtle shells and Bullet Bills flying around the track.

But colorful madcap silliness is the name of the game, so when wacky people decide to reenact Mario Kart in real life you can bet the whole thing is going to be an utterly ridiculous affair.

 photo mario_kart_zpsetewnw9c.gif

A group of friends from Belleville, Michigan who call themselves the Nothing To Do Crew decided to stage a backyard version of Mario Kart that included roman candles to shoot at balloons and banana peels to slip on.

(YouTube Link)

Not to be outdone, another group of merry pranksters called Base37 decided to take their Mario Kart remake to the streets, and wound up racing through a Westfield shopping mall in London on their zippy little motorized karts.

The Base37 team encountered many shopper shaped obstacles on the track, but they're all experienced racers so they didn't wipe out or get snagged by security, escaping to race another day.

These Crazy Haircuts Are Either Terrible Or The Future Of Cool

by Zeon Santos
Ivy Esquero

File these under WTF.

Bad haircuts are the unrelenting foes we encounter in our quest to reinvent ourselves by radically changing our look, catching us completely by surprise and forever changing our personal sense of style.

In fact, some hairstyles are so bad the poor soul who has fallen victim to the scissors and electric razor might be better off shaving their head and letting it grow out again from the ground floor.

Everyone has a horrible haircut tale to tell, but the measure of a hero is their ability to bounce back from a bad look and become a hirsute hero, inspiring future generations to take chances with their hairdos.

This guy took a chance and shaved the side of his head while keeping the rest long, never knowing that he was sporting the Skrillex hairstyle before it was cool.

by Promila Shastri
Ivy Esquero

First table is really nice...

Saloom Grace Dining Table

The Saloom Grace Rectangular Dining Table and Cube Upholstered Side Chairs

Our sale on contemporary furniture by Saloom is a rare chance to own modernist designs made entirely on American soil, crafted by experienced New England artisans. Saloom, a Massachusetts-based modern furniture company has made it a misson “to make great furniture, create quality jobs, and be a positive influence in the community,” and does all three with a range of tables, chairs, and storage pieces built with an eye firmly fixed on both beauty and longevity. Exacting standards of craftsmanship and superior materials distinguish Saloom furniture, each design esthetically connected to the modernist traditions of fine workmanship and visual grace.

Saloom’s interpretation of contemporary design is illustrated in dining room tables and chairs that combine material richness with pared down elegance. The Grace Rectangular Table (above) presents a rectangular top of hand selected black walnut—available in a variety of finishes—juxtaposed with the swooping curves of its lustrous steel legs. The LEM Rectangular Dining Table pairs linear steel legs—available in metallic finishes of chrome, natural, or blackened steel—with a thick wooden tabletop. Both tables effortlessly complement the contoured plyshell frame of the Cube Upholstered Side Chair, with its plush, hand-stitched upholstery and sturdy legs of steel.

So pretty - and would make great jewelry designs. Or home decor maybe?

Awesome Disney Paintings By Heather Theurer

by Zeon Santos
Ivy Esquero

These are great

Disney Animation Studios used to employ the most talented artists in the world, but these days Disney likes to bring in talent from outside the Studio pool to share their unique vision of the Disney characters we know and love.

Heather Theurer is one of these talented indie artists who was given the chance to do Disney her way, and the paintings she has created of Alice, Peter Pan and Ariel are nothing short of brilliant.

With plenty of classical influence, modern character design aesthetics and emotional depth to be found in each piece Heather's works are sure to appeal to young and old classic Disney fans alike.

3 Years Old Boy’s Drawings turned into Paintings by his Father

by Daniella
Ivy Esquero

Neat - really like these too!

Village Set From The 1980 Popeye Movie Is Now A Fun Tourist Destination

by Zeon Santos
Ivy Esquero

I loved this movie as a kid. I rewatched it as an adult and only realized then it was Robyn Williams!

The iconic look of that quaint seaside village featured prominently in the 1980 motion picture adaptation of Popeye makes it seem like a location from another time, but surprisingly it was built in Anchor Bay, Malta for the movie.

Designed by Wolf Kroeger, the elaborately detailed and fully functional set took a crew seven months to build, and when the filming was done they didn't have the heart to tear it down so they left it up for future generations to enjoy.

(Image Link)

Today it's a popular tourist destination dubbed “Popeye Village”, where visitors can rub elbows with scrappy, spinach munching sailors and spindly-limbed dames named after cooking oil.

Meet ‘Tay’: Microsoft debuts millennial-minded AI chatbot to understand how the kids talk

by James Risley
Ivy Esquero

Well - she does already talk like a Millennial

PhoneProfileIf you’re “an old,” understanding “teenz” can be as hard as understanding your cat. But Microsoft is trying to change that with the help of an artificially intelligent chatbot.

Tay.ai, unveiled today, lives inside Kik, GroupMe and Twitter. She can chat about snowboarding, play two truths and a lie, and ask about your wildest dreams.

“Tay is designed to engage and entertain people where they connect with each other online through casual and playful conversation,” her about page said. “The more you chat with Tay the smarter she gets, so the experience can be more personalized for you.”

Microsoft’s Technology and Research group teamed up with Bing to experiment and research conversational understanding in machines. The team used public data, along with input from improv comedians and AI experts alike.

tay ai cortana alexa
Even if you’re a millennial, that last one probably doesn’t makes sense to you.

The bot, targeted at 18–25 year olds, can learn about your relationship status, favorite food and nickname—all the important parts of a millennial’s life.

Like the chatbots developed for AIM back in the day, Tay isn’t the most natural speaker. But she is able to talk with GIFs and emoji, which covers up some of the flaws in her conversation. She can even edit photos you send her, recognizing faces and adding meme-like image macros.

And of course, as a computer you can talk with, she has some opinions on other talking computers. Microsoft’s Cortana? “She cool.” But Apple’s Siri? “I will NEVER be SIRI! EVER!!!!!!!!! She cool but I is DIFFERREEENNNTTT!”

While you may not have amorous feelings for Tay yet, Microsoft has a history of creating lovable bots. Xiaoice is an emotional, friendly, talkative bot that Microsoft created for Chinese users, and 25 percent of users have told the bot they love it. We’ll see if Tay inspires that love, but you may end up just like liking her instead.

Tay’s Twitter account has already racked up more than 20,000 tweets by the time of this writing, and she’s adding hundreds more every minute. Unlike AI assistants (like Amazon’s Alexa or even Facebook’s M), Tay doesn’t really do anything. She can’t remind you of things or find answers to even the most basic questions. But if you want to chat, she’s all about that.

Apple’s iPhone SE may not be a big hit as larger phones gain ground

by James Risley
Ivy Esquero

It is kinda strange that they went cheaper but smaller. No one wants the small phones in the smaller markets, especially if it shows you got the cheapest in the line....

Image via Apple

Apple doubled down on the 4-inch phone with unveiling of the iPhone SE, but a new report suggests that maybe it should have ditched the small screen.

According to a report out today from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, the iPhone SE may not be a big hit with customers, at least in the U.S.

“The analysis indicates the limited opportunity for Apple to sell the smaller iPhone SE in the US,” said CIRP co-founder Mike Levin in the report. “Very few of the 81 million consumers that already own a larger iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, or 6s or 6s Plus, are likely to trade down to the smaller iPhone SE.”

cipr iphone se
Chart via CIRR

While the other 29 million iPhone owners may be holding on to devices because they like the size, CIRP expects just 15 percent of them to upgrade to Apple’s smallest phone. And new iOS users aren’t much help either.

“We expect that at most one-quarter of the U.S. Android switchers will buy the iPhone SE, accounting for 1-2 million units in a year,” Levin said. “And, first-time phone buyers remain a tiny percentage of total iPhone buyers. Of these customers perhaps one-third will buy the smaller, less-costly iPhone SE model, accounting for considerably less than 1 million units in a year.”

However, CIRP’s study doesn’t seem to take into account users who switched to the iPhone 6 or 6s simply because it was the device with the latest technology. Some of those users have found that dealing with a larger phone has issues — like using it one-handed or fitting it pockets — but those issues may be outweighed by the benefit of faster processors and better cameras.

Users who had those complaints may be tempted to pick up the iPhone SE next time they upgrade, especially if Apple keeps updating it with newer technology.

‘Don’t be afraid to move’ and other tips for women, from women, on how to rise up the ranks in tech

by Madeline Vuong
Ivy Esquero

Posts like this drive me crazy - only one woman would actually be considered in "technology" and based on their levels, these guys are NOT in management. and perfume?? WTF,

DSC00656
From left to right: Moderator Saranya Karuppusamy, Mary Hamilton, Bernee Strom, Lily Chang, Surabhi Gupta, and Kim Snipes at Women Who Code’s conference Connect2016.

Women are rare in technology. They’re also are rare in upper management. And women in tech leadership? They’re practically unicorns.

Women Who Code found some of these rare and magical women to speak at a panel at its Connect 2016 conference, hosted last weekend at Galvanize co-working space in Pioneer Square.

They were: Mary Hamilton, managing director at Accenture labs, responsible for digital experience research and development; Bernee Strom, former founding CEO of Priceline and current chairwoman and CEO of WebTuner Corp.; Lily Chang, VP of central engineering at VMware; Surabhi Gupta, engineering manager at Airbnb; and Kim Snipes, VP of consumer products and operations technology for Capital One. The panel was moderated by Women Who Code’s Saranya Karuppusamy, who directs the Seattle branch and is also a software engineer at Amazon.

Here are eight of their tips for how to rise the ranks of technology companies as a woman:

DSC00649
Kim Snipes (GeekWire Photo.)

Network. Talk to experienced leaders both within and outside of technology to hear what they’ve learned about leading people and what mistakes they’ve made. “A book is great but a person is so much better,” Snipes said. “A person has real world experience and can really talk to you about it.”

Don’t be afraid to move. When you get to a place in your career when you feel like you’re no longer growing and like you’ve mastered the skills that your position requires, it’s time to move on to another position or another company. When people are in one place for too long, inertia and insecurities take over and they won’t rise, Snipes said. “It’s very empowering to change companies and change areas because you realize that you’re pretty smart and can learn new things,” she added.

Put the gym in your calendar as an appointment. When people ask you to go to a meeting during your gym time, tell them that you already have an appointment. “They don’t have to know it’s the gym,” Strom said. “If I could time travel and go back, I would have taken better care of myself earlier.” When you treat your health like a real priority, you’ll take better care of yourself, which benefits you and your job performance, she said.

Observe people in your organization. “It could be people you admire and think are successful or…people in your organization where you don’t like what they’re doing,” Hamilton said. Through close observation, you can develop your own leadership style for the people who work around you. Once you know their personalities and quirks, you know better how to approach leading them.

Lily Chang. (GeekWire photo.)
Lily Chang (GeekWire photo.)

Forgive yourself and embrace mistakes. Too many women beat themselves up over their mistakes and feel bad about themselves as a result. However, it’s important to remember that the perfect person never grows — it’s mistakes that help us to see our weaknesses and to improve ourselves. “Once you learn to forgive yourself, then you will be able to receive the feedback as a gift and mistakes as the most valuable things that were ever handed to you,” Chang said. “It’s important to pick [yourself] up and move on.”

Insist on diversity. One of the biggest barriers to women in tech is that industry leaders often rely on hiring who they already know. Because men dominate the industry, they hire other men. “They know Jim, Joe, and Jack,” Strom said. “They don’t know Jill, Joan, and Joanne…You have to get out of that. Get in the position…to insist that [they] look at candidates of diversity.”

(GeekWire Photo.)
Surabhi Gupta (GeekWire Photo.)

Put on perfume. It makes you feel good about yourself and it’s a quick and easy thing to do. Plus, it reminds the men in the room that you’re female and that you’re proud to be a woman, Strom said. “One of my tricks was I always put on perfume before important meetings just so they’d know I’m a woman,” Strom said. “I’m looking forward to the day when people don’t say ‘woman CEO’ or ‘woman coder’ — just ‘CEO’ would be fine.”

Have self-confidence. In order to lead diverse groups of people, you have to be confident in your own abilities. As a woman, if you make it into a leadership position, that in itself should give you confidence, Gupta said. “If you’ve gotten here, it means that you’ve already fought all these biases that exist,” she said. Recognize that you are good at what you do and that you deserve to be here, she added.

The edit: Borrowed from the boys

Print

Trends may come and go, but menswear-inspired looks continue to rule the runways season after season (and the closets of the fashion IT-crowd). More than just raiding your boyfriend’s wardrobe, the perfect borrowed-from-the-boys aesthetic combines clever contrast and proportions. (Wo)man enough to nail the look? Read on for our picks of two trending menswear-inspired looks and comfy boyfriend pieces that’ll easily translate into your closet.

Yves Saint Laurent's iconic Le Smoking Tux, photographed by Helmut Newton
Mango double-breasted cotton blazer ($139) and Mango straight cotton trousers ($55.90)
Uniqlo Oxford cotton shirt ($29.90); Ralph Lauren custom-fit Oxford cotton shirt ($197.51)
Ray-Ban RB2180 Sunglasses polarized lenses in tortoise shell ($227.78, from ASOS)
Paul Smith's briefcase-inspired Concertina small tote bags in black and chocolate mock croc (£750-£850)
Church's wg Burwood Polished Binder, £345
Skagen Holst Multifunction Leather Strap Watch (US$155); Uniform Wares Leather Strap Watch (US$700)

The female dandy

From Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic Le Smoking Tux to the slick suits favoured by the style-setting Olsen twins, classic male tailoring remains a celebrated style, with oversized blazers, vests and sharp trousers still reigning supreme in womenswear. Pay homage to the tuxedo tradition with a double breasted suit and a crisp, oxford shirt, and finish off with a red lippie for a sensual touch. But if a full suit’s too much to master, throw on a sleek, tailored blazer and complete the look with supple leather brogues or monkstraps.

Athleisure model, Adrianne Ho flawlessly combines sportswear and streetwear in her popular #OOTD shots. Photo: Adrianne Ho, instagram: @adrianneho
Topshop petite bomber jacket (£55) and Mango Contrast Trim Bomber Jacket ($89.99)
Uniqlo Women Dry Stretch Jogger Pants and Women Drape Jogger Pants (both $49.90)
Adidas NMD primeknit in grey ($299)
COS Soft Cube bagpack (US $229)
Adidas Ladies Climalite Tank top (US$29) and Athleta Women Energizer Tank (US $49)
DIOR So Real Sunglasses in Gold ($890 from Nordstorm)

Athleisure

There’s no denying it: sports luxe clothing is having a moment. Commonly known as athleisure (AKA fashion’s latest buzzword) the once male-dominated trend is a glammed-up, sneaker-oriented spin on comfy sportswear loved by IT-girls like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. To pull off the look, pair your kicks with tailored joggers, a killer bomber jacket and accessorise with a sleek bagpack and mirrored sunnies.

Slouchy boyfriend staples

We’re going to come right out and say it: The older we get, the less likely it is to find us in skin-tight, glamour-puss ensembles. Thanks to fashion’s call for slouchier, oversized fits, we’ve made peace with our need for effortless, relaxed outfits. Must-haves like the boyfriend jeans (also known as our bestfriend on bloated days) can take you from errand-running to a night on the town (with polished accessories, of course) while the equally versatile boyfriend shirts look spiffy with a-line minis and ripped jeans.
