Artist Crochets And Hides Superheroes Around The City For People To Find

by Martynas Klimas

What if the Man Of Steel was made of yarn instead? That’s the kind of shower thoughts that crocheted superheroes by Geeky Hooker inspire. Let me start by clarifying, just like in every other article, that “hooker” here means a crocheting fan. The kind that uses hooks to make superheroes out of yarn. Superheroes, inflatable robots from Disney movies and Frida Kahlo (because she wanted to make a miniature unibrow).

Geeky Hooker works as a healthcare professional when not making crochet superheroes. She doesn’t sell her creations; she scatters them for adoption during the San Diego Comic Con. If you can’t wait till then, how about crocheting some of them yourself? After all, anyone can be a geeky hooker!

Rescued Magpie Becomes Lifelong Friend With The Family That Saved Her Life

by dmitry

1
After being rescued and nursed back to health by a young family in Newport, Australia, a magpie named Penguin has become a regular visitor and friend at the Bloom family’s home, playing with them and coming in to hide when it rains.

2
Penguin was discovered flying on the ground near a tree in 2013 by Noah, who is now 11. After being nursed back to health by husband and wife Cameron and Sam and their children (Reuben, 13, Noah, 11, Oli, 9), Penguin was allowed to fly free, but still returned often to spent time with the family. She plays catch, saunters through their home and even perches on their shoulders – all while Cameron Bloom takes beautiful pictures.

3
The bird waits for the family to leave their home before flying on her own way in the morning, and greets the kids when they get home from school; “It’s like a dog wagging its tail – she sits there in the tree and flaps her wings like she’s excited,” Noah’s father told ABC News.

4
“Little baby magpie came into our lives when she fell from a tree at about 3 weeks old”

5
“We gradually nursed her back to health with a proper Magpie diet and lots of cuddles”

6
“She watches tv, jumps on the tramp with the kids, flies into our bed in the morning and cuddles up”

7
“I never thought she’d become as much a part of the family as she has. [The kids] love her like a dog, but better”

8
9
“She’s free to fly – she often will just hang out around us in the morning then when the kids go to school she’ll do her own thing”

10
“If you flap your arms like wings – she’ll flap her wings”

11
12
“She spends a fair bit of time cruising inside the house, picking up the kids’ scraps and playing games. She’s pretty domesticated”

13
“When the kids play handball here with their friends… Penguin just flies from kid to kid, sort of gets involved. It’s pretty fun. It’s chaotic”

14
“If other magpies are around she’ll make a beeline for the house and fly in here so she doesn’t get bombed and pecked – they really attack her”

15
16
“A few months ago there was another baby magpie, a local one. She started playing with it and it came into the house”

17
“Penguin and this one were just… talking and carrying on together. It was really cool”

Portraits of Homeless

by Léa

Two Inseparable Lion Cubs

by Léa

Lofty Micro Apartment

by Natalia

24132862-81f3-496a-90ce-ba01f1338ccc

This clever micro loft is a prototype for a hotel room, created by Amsterdam based studio Concrete for the hotel brand Zocu, who will unveil it to their customers this fall. Zoku, which is Japanese for family, tribe, or clan, will disrupt and create a new category in the hotel industry. The place will have the services of a hotel and the social buzz of a thriving neighborhood, envisioned as a relaxed place to live, work and socialize with like-minded people while getting wired into the city. I love the flexibility of the space, and inventiveness of the hidden elements (with the retractable staircase as my absolute favorite). Check out the photos after the break for a complete tour.

Jeffrey Milstein’s Aerial Photography Reveals Stunning Views Of NYC And LA Like You’ve Never Seen Before

by Anissa Jousset

milstein1 milstein2 milstein3 milstein4

Photographer Jeffrey Milstein takes his architectural eye thousands of feet up in the air and captures the New York and Los Angeles skylines like you’ve never seen them before. He gives us more than just a bird’s eye view of both familiar and unfamiliar buildings; his photographs are artistic compositions within themselves. Milstein shows the intricate symmetry, lines and details of architecture which are not always visible from the ground, and by doing so allows the structures to become landscapes of their own.

He not only gives us an original visual angle but also a deeper look into the craft of architecture itself, from the repetitive structures of suburban LA homes to the angular beauty of the Empire State, the colors and textures of the building materials are both in harmony and contrasts with the natural elements surrounding them. The trees surrounding the bases of the buildings almost become accessories, they accentuate the craftsmanship and thought of architectural feat, housing and industry.

What Milstein has done here is captured the essence of our times, a combination of nature, artifice and something in between. By doing this, he has also managed to bring architecture to a more accessible level, by elevating the audience above the buildings in a way that makes their intricacy more simple without letting it loose its character and distinct characteristics. Beyond this, Milstein has managed to make a point: there’s only so much we can see for where we stand.

See Jeffrey Milstein’s work in person at Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles from July 18th-August 22nd.

NXNE ART: Toronto Urban Takeover

by 1LOVETO

NXNEART-1

Our skyline, like our streets, is always changing, always evolving. We’re heading into a new era in Toronto; a more refined, redesigned, more socially conscious state of mind. These three facets were the building blocks of an exciting segment of NXNE Art produced by, Hermann & Audrey, called “Urban Takeover – infiltrating the streets of Toronto”.

With support from the city’s stART Program, Downtown Yonge BIA and West Queen West BIA, local and international artists were given free reign to conceptualize and execute murals in, alleyways, on an overpass and on the side of commercial buildings, even one about to be demolished! The central theme was a “re-imagined or future, Toronto” with art around every corner of downtown. These spaces, which normally wouldn’t even get a second glance, were transformed into mesmerizing works of art which totally changed the pedestrian experience and brought new life and purpose to a dead end.

17 Flowers Masterfully Disguised As Something Else

by Audra

Aside from their elegance and beauty, orchids are well known for their extraordinarily diverse colors and appearances, which can often resemble a wide array of other objects or animals. Orchids very often tend to evoke instances of pareidolia – a psychological phenomenon where our brain creates significant images or likenesses out of seemingly random forms. This is a compilation of 17 orchids and other flowers that, due to their extraordinary shapes and colors and our complex perception mechanisms, look very much like something else.

Within the vast arena of Japanese sculpture there’s a small niche category known as jizai okimono. The craft involves carving realistic animals whose bodies and limbs are all animated through joints just like the real living thing. Some common subjects are birds, fishes, snakes and insects. It’s a craft that originated in the late-Edo period (late 1700s) when metalsmiths and armor makers, faced with a decline in demand for armor, found themselves with plenty of time on their hands. But ever since it’s modest beginnings, the lobster, with its numerous joints and undulating back, has been considered to be the most difficult and challenging subject.

Ryosuke Ohtake, a young 25-year old sculptor, caused quite a stir recently when he boldly took on the challenge and created an immaculate and animated lobster from wood. What stunned many was that not only was the piece carved from wood (which is considered far more difficult than using copper) but the fact that this was Ohtake’s first official jizai okimono. The lobster was part of a wooden sculpture exhibition at Tokyu Department Store in Tokyo this April. Watch the video to see exactly how realistic this lobster moves. And you can see more of his work over on his Facebook page.

At the age of 14, photographer Cory Richards had dropped out of high school and was technically homeless. His education, he says, was instead obtained through the observation of struggle. Through various forms of discomfort and adventure he would eventually become the first American to successfully summit an 8,000-meter peak in winter (Pakistan’s Gasherbrum II), and launch an incredible career in photography through the pages of National Geographic.

Brooklyn-based digital media company Blue Chalk recently sat down with Richards to discuss his motivations and driving desire to connect with the people he photographs. (via ISO 1200, PetaPixel)

Floating skate ramp in the middle of Lake Tahoe [Video]

by 1designperday

Professional skateboarder Bob Burnquist has skated on almost every surface imaginable. In 2013, when Visit California asked him to dream big and try something completely new, he and his team decided to build a ramp…that floats. “Dreaming big man, that’s what I do every day, I just try to dream as big as I can and then go make it happen. You need to believe in something intense enough to go make it happen.” Burnquist said.

300 man hours, 1,250 screws and 7,300 lbs later, the athlete’s dream surfaced over the crystal blue waters of Lake Tahoe.

Don’t miss the project video:
